Alexie Little earns First Team honors

IOWA CITY– Four Iowa City West High varsity girls bowlers earned recognition from the Mississippi Valley athletic Conference (MVC) for their efforts in the 2017-18 season with the Friday, Feb. 23, release of the All-Division selections.
Alexie Little, Chloe Beckler, Kylie Rohm and Megan Brown were awarded spots on the First Team, Honorable Mention and All Academic rosters.

Heartbreak for the Bolts in 50-47 substate loss

MOUNT PLEASANT– The first season of varsity boys basketball at Liberty High School ended with a 50-47 loss in the first round of substate play Monday, Feb. 19, against Fort Madison, in Mount Pleasant, as part of a Class 3A Substate 5 doubleheader.
“Turnovers cost us at the end of the game,” Ordman said. “And (Kaleb) Cresswell knocked in four deep, deep threes while closely guarded. And they hit their free throws.”
Fort Madison senior Kaleb Cresswell led all scorers with 20 points.

Seven Women of Troy earn All-Division honors

Cook named Athlete of the Year, Mayer takes Coach of the Year

IOWA CITY– B.J. Mayer and the West High Women of Troy took many honors in the 2018 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Girls’ Basketball All-Division selections released Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Mayer and staff earned Mississippi Division Coach of the Year, while Logan Cook was named the Division Athlete of the Year.
Cook was also a unanimous First Team pick, along with Xavier’s Caitlynn Daniels and Waterloo West’s Na’ Tracia Ceasar.

Liberty girls ready to light up the track

NORTH LIBERTY– They don’t yet have their own track to call home, but they’re ready to light up this spring as only Lightning can. They’re the first girls track and field team for Liberty High School, in North Liberty, and will see action soon as the 2018 track and field season gets underway.
Head Coach Keaton Rickels, a native of Iowa Falls, leads the Lightning.
Rickels competed in football, track and wrestling.
“I was fortunate to have my father as a coach throughout my athletic career and I think that motivated me to want to coach,” he said.

Trojans ready to return to the track

IOWA CITY– 2017 was a good year for the Iowa City West High varsity boys track and field team. The Trojans were Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) divisional champions, district champions and the ninth-place team (in overall points) at the State Coed Track Meet. In addition, Travis Craig and staff earned MVC Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
2018 looks to be as good, if not better.
Craig, in his third year leading the program, said the team has a lot of fresh new faces to blend with an already solid group of veterans who have come out for track this season.

IC West defeats CR Washington, 66-46

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s varsity boys basketball team put themselves one game away from yet another Class 4A state tournament appearance with a 66-46 substate semifinal win at home over Cedar Rapids Washington Friday, Feb. 23. It was the second victory over the Warriors as the Trojans prevailed 73-52 at Wash in January.
The Trojans, plagued by an uncharacteristically high number of turnovers, foiled the Warriors with their characteristically high signature defense. West led 11-4 at the end of the first period and racked up a 31-16 halftime lead.

Creek Girls ready to set sail for success

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) girls track and field program has experienced a surge in growth, which Coach Jane Astor said, brings “a lot of promising young talent.”
Astor is in her 28th season with the Clippers and has 12th-season Assistant Coach Teri Schultejans at her side again along with Bob Broghammer and many volunteer coaches. The Creek Girls were 12th in the 2017 WaMaC Conference Meet and eighth in the state qualifying meet.

Four Creek Girls earn All-Conference Stratton unanimous First Team pick

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) placed four varsity girls basketball players on the 2018 WaMaC Conference’s All-WaMaC teams. Sophomore Karsyn Stratton was a unanimous First Team pick, along with a trio of Marion players: Chloe Rice, Kayba Laube and Mia Laube, Center Point-Urbana’s Allie Wooldridge and South Tama’s Jessica Musgrave.
Marion’s Corby Laube was named the West Division Coach of the Year with a 23-0 showing this season ahead of the state tournament.
The Clear Creek Amana Clippers finished the 2017-18 season at 11-11.

Creek Boys’ season ended by Indee’s Mustangs

TAMA– Conventional wisdom claims it is all but impossible for one athletic team to defeat another three times in one season. Unfortunately for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys basketball team, the Independence Mustangs debunked the claim with three wins over the Clippers this year. Indee won, 72-66, in January, 81-68 on Feb. 2 and ended the Creek Boys’ season with a 54-44 first-round substate loss Monday, Feb. 19, at South Tama High School in the first contest of a doubleheader.
