Clipper boys fourth, girls 10th at Bob Brown Invitational cross country meet

IOWA CITY– Kickers Soccer Park was the site of the 2015 Bob Brown Invitational cross-country meet hosted by Iowa City Regina Thursday, Sept. 3. The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers participated, with the Clipper boys finishing fourth in team points and the girls placing 10th. Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the boys’ race while Monticello took the girls’ team honors. Individually, Monticello’s Matt Manternach won in 17:15.34 and Durant’s Alyssa Williams won in 19:15.31.

Women of Troy go 3-2 in Marshalltown

West falls in invitational semifinal round to Dike-New Hartford

MARSHALLTOWN– West High volleyball coach Randy Dolson described the Women of Troy’s day at the Marshalltown Roundhouse and Pat Apgar Invitational as “up-and-down.”
West went 3-1 in pool play, defeating Charles City 2-0 (21-18, 21-18), Southeast Polk 2-1 (21-15, 17-21, 15-13) and Iowa Falls 2-0 (21-18, 21-16), but lost to Dike-New Hartford 0-2 (19-21, 13-21). The Women of Troy faced the Wolverines of Dike-New Hartford again in the semifinals, taking the first set, 25-19, and falling, 25-21, in the second forcing a hard-fought third set. West fell, 16-14, in that game.

New fitness opportunity for NL moms, stroller babies

NORTH LIBERTY– Fit4Mom North Liberty is a franchise of a fitness company based in San Diego (Fit4Mom) and is a fitness program created by moms for moms. The Stroller Strides program is an hour-long class that moms attend with their children in a stroller. The class offers a full body workout and the only equipment needed is a sturdy stroller, a towel or yoga mat, and an exercise band (provided). The workout incorporates songs and actions so that moms are able to interact with their children throughout the class.

CCA x-country battles heat in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG– Heat and humidity added to the challenges of the season-opening meet for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) cross country teams on Tuesday, Sept. 1, as they competed in the Williamsburg invitational. Due to the oppressive conditions, times for the races were changed to later in the afternoon with the junior varsity and varsity teams combined.
Eric Douglass, a senior, led the Clipper boys with a fourth-place finish and the team placed fourth overall behind Mount Pleasant, Mid-Prairie and Marion.

NLFD hosts annual fundraiser

NORTH LIBERTY —Bobbers Grill and Scales Pointe Campground were bustling Saturday, Aug. 22, as the North Liberty Fire Department held its annual “Salute to Summer” event. The daylong gathering featuring activities for kids and adults is the volunteer department’s fundraiser. The proceeds from the event will go toward additional training and equipment.
In addition to the department’s trucks, an all-terrain utility vehicle outfitted for brush fires and a large event Emergency Medical Services (EMS) response was on display. Funds raised in previous years made that purchase possible.

ICCSD school board approves $80,000 for more busing

District officials hope to revise busing criteria to recognize socioeconomic barriers

IOWA CITY– Parents came in droves to the Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors meeting, on Aug. 25, urging the board to add discretionary busing to the newly-opened Alexander Elementary. After hearing from more than 20 parents, the board voted unanimously to allocate $80,000 for discretionary busing.
As of last week, district officials said no date had been set for when bus service to Alexander school, located at 3571 Sycamore St. in Iowa City, would begin.

Dog park group to address parks board Sept. 3

NORTH LIBERTY– A group of North Liberty residents urging the city to help build an off-leash dog park will address the North Liberty Parks and Recreation Board at its meeting Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. at City Council Chambers, 1 Quail Creek Circle in North Liberty.
“Given the community support we’ll demonstrate with our petition, we hope the board will add an off-leash dog park to the city’s parks plan,” said group spokesperson Jake Villhauer of North Liberty. “The residents we hear from are very excited about the possibility.”

NORTH LIBERTY– Residents living in and around the North Liberty area can learn about their risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and other chronic conditions with affordable screenings by Life Line Screening at the South Slope Community Center Sept. 28.
Screenings can check for:
• The level of plaque buildup in arteries, related to risk for heart disease, stroke and overall vascular health
• HDL and LDL Cholesterol levels
• Diabetes risk
• Bone density as a risk for possible osteoporosis
• Kidney and thyroid function, and more

New features coming to Tiffin website at www.tiffin-iowa.org

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin has been working to bring new features to the city’s website to increase convenience and make it easier to access information. These new features consist of online utility payments and electronic access to city documents (such as resolutions, ordinances, council meeting minutes and building permits). City staff plans to have these new features up and running within the next few months. Over the past few weeks, the city’s website has been also updated to include city council packets, which are hosted through the website dropbox.com.

CEDAR RAPIDS– West High’s Trojans opened the 2015 varsity football season with a 34-31 loss on the road at Cedar Rapids Kennedy Thursday, Aug. 27. The Cougars’ Tyler Dralle stymied the Trojan defense, rushing 40 times for 265 yards and four touchdowns.

TIFFIN– Center Point-Urbana has been known as “The Stormin’ Pointers” for many decades. Friday, Aug. 28, in Tiffin, they stormed the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers’ homeport for a 17-10 season-opening win. Mother Nature stormed, too, with rain throughout much of the game and an hour-and-a-half lightning delay.

West’s Butler inherits swim/dive team with 10 returning starters

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy Swimming and Diving Team has a new head coach for the 2015 season. Byron Butler, a three-time individual state champion in Wisconsin and former University of Iowa Hawkeye swimmer, took the position in late May after Rob Miecznikowski stepped down. Butler twice was a state champion in the butterfly, and once in the backstroke. West High Athletic Director Scott Kibby noted Butler’s times qualified him for automatic All-American status.
