Swisher Legion Lenten suppers

through March 23

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion will serve Lenten suppers every Friday through March 23, from 5-8 p.m.
The Legion will serve all-you-can-eat fish ($11), shrimp ($14) and chicken strips ($7). Add-on shrimp for $6; meals for children 6-12 years of age are $5; kids 5 and under are free. Meals are served with one trip through the salad bar. Carry-out is available.
The Swisher American Legion Junior Auxiliary will host a bake sale in conjunction with the Lenten suppers. The public is welcome, call 319-857-4687 for more information.

Oxford Legion dance March 25

OXFORD– Grab a dance partner and head over to Oxford. The American Legion Post 537 is hosting a dance Sunday, March 25. This will feature live performances by the Memory Bros. The event is scheduled from 6-9 p.m. with light food and beverages provided. Admission is $9.

IOWA CITY– The bluest county in Iowa is going green.
Johnson County is taking strides to form a more eco-friendly fleet of vehicles, an initiative that’s been several years in the making.
“I drove a Prius for about 10 years,” recalled Mike Carberry, Johnson County Supervisor. A longtime environmental advocate, Carberry was convinced to invest in hybrid and electric cars on a county level after his switch to an all-electric Chevrolet Volt.

DNR report on Lake Macbride

SOLON– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) held a meeting Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Solon Public Library to discuss a range of issues concerning Lake Macbride State Park, including its upcoming 100th anniversary in 2020.
The 2,180-acre park features a 940-acre lake, 14.5 miles of trails, and 101 campsites. And, as of last year, one alcohol ban.
The park played host to over half a million visitors in 2017 (509,500), though many long-term visitors voiced concerns, as the last beach in Johnson County allowing alcohol until last year, it had become less of a family atmosphere.

West High Women of Troy claim 5A hoops title with 56-45 win over City High

DES MOINES– The third time was truly the charm.
B.J. Mayer and his Iowa City West High Women of Troy claimed the 2018 Class 5A State Basketball Championship Friday, March 2, at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines after knocking off crosstown rival City High, 56-45.
It was West’s sixth tournament appearance (all under Mayer) and its first championship since 2012.
Rachael Saunders, who was injured early in the 2017 season, likely spoke for her teammates after the game when she expressed her amazement at the accomplishment.

McCaffery and Sims are unanimous MVC First Team picks

IOWA CITY– The West High varsity boys basketball team placed six players on the 2017-18 Mississippi Valley athletic Conference (MVC) All-Division Basketball team rosters, released on Feb. 21.
Head coach Steve “Bergie” Bergman and staff took Mississippi Division Coach of the Year Honors with Patrick McCaffery and Seybian Sims earning unanimous selection to the division’s First Team. Dante Eldridge was a Second Team pick, while Evan Flitz and Hakeem Odunsi earned Honorable Mention. Flitz and Jake Anderson were also chosen for All-Academic recognition.

TIFFIN– Three Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys basketball players earned WaMaC athletic Conference honors following the release of the 2018 All-Conference Boys Basketball teams.
Darius Moore was a unanimous WaMaC West First Team pick, along with Benton Community’s Spencer Touro, Sean Geertsema of Independence, Gabe Shields from South Tama and Brandon Blythe of Williamsburg.
Jordan Wolfe and Tyler Schrepfer earned Honorable Mention in the WaMaC West.
South Tama’s Dustin Peska and staff took Coach of the Year honor.

IC West beats CR Kennedy to 4A substate

CEDAR RAPIDS– Bergie was almost at a loss for words. Bergie is Steve Bergman, Iowa City West High head varsity boys basketball coach, and rarely is he left struggling to find the words to express himself.
However, after his Trojans struggled against Cedar Rapids Kennedy Tuesday, Feb. 27, in a Class 4A substate final at the U.S. Cellular Center, Bergie seemed to be processing the game as he met with reporters after the 49-40 win.

North Liberty’s historic Samuel and Emma A. Ranshaw House, located at 515 W. Penn St., is finally getting the renovations it so desperately needs.

NORTH LIBERTY– On Thursday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m., the North Liberty Community Library welcomes Doris Montag, a local freelance curator and homespun humorist who will present an exhibit of artifacts from raising chickens in the 1900’s. One in a series from The History of Ordinary Things, Doris brings to the audience the science, history and stories of incubating chicks, colored eggs, breed differences, egg nutrition and her special passion– the evolution of the egg carton.
