DES MOINES– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy took the Class 4A runner-up team trophy Saturday, May 20, at the 2017 State Coed Track and Field Meet on Drake University’s storied Blue Oval in Des Moines. West High’s 89 points was second only to the 116 posted by Waukee for the championship at the conclusion of the three-day event.

OXFORD– It’s been several years since the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls softball team has held a state championship banner on the diamonds in Fort Dodge. A new group of coaches hopes to end that drought and return the team to one of the premier programs in the state.
Matt Trosky, Jackson Litterer, Blake Wilson, Katie Wyman, Jamie Henze, Craig Stratton and CCA standout graduate Lexi Kinnaird team up to lead the Clippers this season. Trosky, Litterer and Wilson will operate as co-head coaches.
Trosky quickly emphasizes, “The entire staff is equal.”

IC West sends both teams to state tennis tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS– Iowa City West High’s boys tennis team won two key matches Saturday, May 20, to advance to the state semifinals Tuesday, May 30, at the Prairie Ridge Tennis Complex in Ankeny. The Trojans are the Class 2A defending state champions.

Warriors fall victim to Women of Troy, who improve to 14-1 overall

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy varsity soccer team improved to 14-1 overall and 10-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Tuesday, May 16, with an 8-1 win over Cedar Rapids Washington.
Regan Steigleder booted in two goals in 11 minutes during the first half and completed the hat trick with a third goal in the second. Leah Rhodes scored twice, including a header off a ball from Steigleder. Pauline Kihura and Lizzie Raley scored their first varsity goals of the season while Emma Cooper put one away, complimenting her four assists.

DES MOINES– A small detachment of Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity track and field athletes competed in the 2017 state coed meet Thursday, May 18, through Saturday, May 20, on the historic Blue Oval at Drake University in Des Moines.
Ainsley Schrock was the Clippers’ highest-finishing competitor with her sixth-place finish in the girls’ Class 3A discus event with a best throw of 117-8. Mariah Roller was 15th with a 111-11 effort.

NL’s Steve Junge keeps corridor pianos in-tune

NORTH LIBERTY– Pianos are complex instruments, hand-assembled by craftsmen, that produce melodious sounds for decades. However, like any mechanical device, eventually they need attention and tuning. The seven-county area, known as Iowa’s Creative Corridor, including North Liberty in particular, now has an artisan dedicated to restoring a piano’s full musical potential.
Steve Junge, of North Liberty, began offering professional piano tuning services in November. A corporate reorganization led to Junge reevaluating what he wanted to do. Music was the answer, but what aspect of music?

Assistant Scott Sanders takes over Women of Troy volleyball

IOWA CITY– Change came to Iowa City West High’s varsity volleyball program. Randy Dolson resigned the head coach position in order to lead the fledgling Liberty High Lightning in North Liberty. Scott Sanders, his assistant, was hired to take over the West program to lead the Women of Troy.
Sanders was assistant coach at Iowa City West High for eight seasons, working with legendary West High coach Kathy “Brez” Bresnahan for five years and the past three for Dolson.
He graduated with 24 classmates from Glidden-Ralston and managed the volleyball team his senior year.

Bur Oak Land Trust Family Day Sunday, May 21, at Turkey Creek

SOLON– Family Day with Bur Oak Land Trust will be hosted on Sunday, May 21, at the Turkey Creek Preserve. Admission is free and refreshments will be offered. There will also be seining in the creek and scavenger hunt with prizes.
Bur Oak Land Trust presents Family Day at Turkey Creek Preserve from 1-3 p.m. at 2545 Sugar Bottom Rd. NE in Solon.
Turkey Creek Preserve is 107.24 acres of woods and former pasture land, including five acres of reconstructed prairie which also has geocache locations.

Sooner than later for new elementary school

Enrollment projections lead to a slight gamble for CCA facilities plan

OXFORD– In September, voters in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District will be asked to approve a $36 million bond issue, which– if approved– would finance a new elementary school among other projects aimed at addressing continued enrollment growth. The new unnamed elementary was originally scheduled to be open for the 2020-21 school year; however, Superintendent Tim Kuehl recently asked the School Board of Directors to move it up one year.

Bike to the farmers market Sunday, May 21

NORTH LIBERTY– In celebration of Bike Month 2017 in Johnson County, organizers of the North Liberty Farmers Market invite you to bike to the market on Sunday, May 21. Those who do will receive a $2 voucher to spend at any one of the vendors. Limited vouchers will be available, so show up early.

Container gardening class at NLCP May 25

NORTH LIBERTY– Growing food doesn’t have to take a lot of time or even space. Container gardening is an easy way to grow food without land. On Thursday, May 25, the community is invited to Growing Together Garden for a free, hands-on Container Gardening Class.
“Container gardening allows anybody to grow food even if they don’t have access to land or are unsure about starting an in-ground garden,” explained Ilsa DeWald, Garden Coordinator at the North Liberty Community Pantry. “This class provides an easy way to practice gardening skills with potentially delicious rewards.”
