Free fall leaf pick-up to begin Monday, Oct. 3, at 7

NORTH LIBERTY– Open burning of leaves and yard waste is not permitted in North Liberty. The city will pick up leaves that property owners have raked to the curb Monday through Friday from Oct. 3 to Nov. 21.
Leaves should be piled within two feet of the curb or edge of road. No sticks, branches or any other yard waste should be mixed with the leaves. Brush or garden waste may be bundled for pickup on your regular trash day.

North Liberty lends a helping hand

NORTH LIBERTY– Although unaffected by the late September flooding much of Eastern Iowa experienced, the City of North Liberty was able to assist those areas in need.
At the request of Dave Wilson, Director of Johnson County Emergency Management Agency, the North Liberty Streets Department delivered materials to assist with flood mitigation and recovery Thursday, Sept. 22, as the Cedar River prepared to crest at near-record levels.

Clippers earn historic win 26-0 over CP-U

TIFFIN– To borrow from the late musical artist known as Prince, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers likely partied like it was 1999 in the wake of their 26-0 win Friday, Sept. 23 over Center Point-Urbana. The year 1999 was the last time the Creek Boys had a 5-0 record, which is where they and West Delaware stand in Class 3A District 4.
The win was doubly sweet for the Clippers coming on their Homecoming night with quarterback Ashton Carpenter presented as the King with Be DeShaw as his Queen.

“O-Bolts” 3-2 with win over Indians

Liberty defeats Marion, 36-22

MARION– The Original Bolts freshman football team, representing Liberty High, improved to a 3-2 record in their inaugural season with a 36-22 win at Marion Monday, Sept. 19.
“The offensive line collectively played their best game to date,” Bolts’ coach Jeff Gordon said, noting the crew dominated the line of scrimmage for large portions of the game. “Max Lenane, Sam Nicklaus, Scott Dall, Alec Boldt, Evan Scwarzendruber, Ryan Nugent, Harrison Voight and Andres Estrada all stood out along the Bolt offensive line.”

Iowa City West laps rival swim team City High, 111-75

IOWA CITY– West High’s Women of Troy swimmers dunked cross-town rivals City High, 111-75, Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the Coralville Recreation Center.
Lily Ernst won both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly for West in 2:17.80 and 1:01.60, while Alleyna Thomas took the 100-yard freestyle in 56.75 seconds and Melanie Housenga won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:26.83.

Liberty Lady Lightning 4th at midpoint of inaugural season

IOWA CITY– The Liberty High School “Lady Lightning” freshmen volleyball team was fourth in the CRANDIC standings Tuesday, Sept. 20 (the midpoint for the season), according to statistics provided by Iowa City High Athletic Director Terry Coleman.
The Lightning sit at 7-2 behind 10-0 Linn-Mar Red, 8-2 Linn-Mar Black and 8-3 Cedar Rapids Prairie Black. Iowa City West High’s freshmen had a 5-4 record with City High’s White and Red squads searching for their first win at 0-10 and 0-11, respectively.

Creek Girls bit by the Pointers

CP-U sinks CCA, 3-0

TIFFIN– The Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana (CP-U) swept the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers, 3-0, in varsity volleyball Tuesday, Sept. 20, in Tiffin. The Pointers took the first set, 25-20, with the Creek Girls narrowing the gap to one point (19-18) although trailing throughout. CP-U won the second set, 25-21, in a game where the Clippers tied the Pointers 7-7, 15-15, 18-18 and 20-20 but never led. CP-U took the match with a 25-13 third-set win.

Macbride alcohol ban takes legislative twist

Administrative rules committee sends amendment to legislature

DES MOINES– It’s up to the Iowa Legislature now.
The implementation of an alcohol ban at Lake Macbride State Park’s beach was delayed by a legislative review committee, and the Iowa House and Senate will have their chance to fix the problem.
A ban on “alcoholic liquor, beer, and wine” from beaches at Lake Macbride State Park and Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area in Linn County was approved by the Iowa Natural Resources Commission at an Aug. 11 meeting and the amended rule was to go into effect Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Liberty High construction continues ahead of schedule

NORTH LIBERTY— Construction continues on the new Liberty High School ahead of a fall 2017 opening. According to Liberty principal Scott Kibby, work on the 210,000 square foot facility is approximately one month ahead of schedule.
The school, located near the intersection of Dubuque St. and North Liberty Road, is being built to accommodate 1,000 students initially with a 500-student addition planned for the future. Kibby anticipates opening with around 600 students, at this time, subject to attendance boundary changes and population changes in North Liberty.

Ordinance to push archers outside city limits

City council passes first reading of public safety amendment

NORTH LIBERTY– Just outside North Liberty city limits is the Johnson County Archers (JCA) shooting range. Many don’t know about the public range, said JCA Public Relations Coordinator Dan Heitzman, but soon it could be the nearest place for archery enthusiasts to shoot their bows.
At a Sept. 13 meeting, the North Liberty City Council passed the first reading of an amendment to the city code regarding public health and safety, adding arrows to the list of weapons unlawful to be discharged within city limits. Other weapons on the list include several types of firearms.

Pentecost named new streets superintendent

NORTH LIBERTY– Michael Pentecost was named the City of North Liberty’s streets superintendent by the city council, effective Sept. 14. Pentecost has been with the City of North Liberty since 2001, most recently as assistant water superintendent.
“Michael has been a valuable member of our team for more than a decade,” said City Administrator Ryan Heiar. “He brings public works experience, a strong work ethic and a deep knowledge of North Liberty.”

Bird banding at F.W. Kent Park Sept. 24

OXFORD– For the past two years, Johnson County Conservation (JCC) collaborated with federally licensed bird bander Rob Bradley to survey bird populations at F.W. Kent Park. The public is invited to observe Bradley, a bander with over 30 years of experience, and his team of volunteers in action on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon at the bird blind near the Conservation Education Center.
