NLPD strategizes to bring cops and kids together on the court

NORTH LIBERTY — Everyone knows they serve and protect; but on Saturday, Oct. 24, North Liberty residents will find out if their sworn police officers got game, too.
The North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) will host its first “Hoops with a Cop” event at the North Liberty Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to noon, with the officers taking to the basketball court to meet the public and have a little fun.

NL’s fourth annual dog plunge makes a splash

NORTH LIBERTY– Tails were wagging and wet fur was flying at the North Liberty Aquatic Center, Sept. 10 and 11, during the city’s fourth annual Doggie Plunge event.
Each year as the city closes its outdoor pool to human customers, Aquatics Director Katie Gerot and her staff get ready to entertain four-legged friends who also enjoy getting wet. In order to be pet-friendly, the water must be properly prepared by cutting off chemical treatments and dropping the water level below the system’s filters.

ICCSD task force makes recommendations for use of insecticides

IOWA CITY – After the Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors approved a temporary district-wide pesticide ban on school facilities and grounds, a newly-assembled Integrated Pest Management (IPM) task force has made an interim recommendation to the district allowing for limited use of insecticides with low toxicity.

Johnson County Assessor Bill Greazel celebrated his retirement from more than four decades of service with a reception on Friday, Sept. 25. Those years brought many changes, innovations and advancements to the assessor’s office, as well as many lessons to the man himself.

Oct. 25 Stone Soup Supper, Silent Auction to benefit pantry

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry will host its 7th Annual Stone Soup Supper and Silent Auction on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 4-7 p.m. at the South Slope Community Room, 980 N. Front St., North Liberty. The event is sponsored by Hills Bank and Trust Company, University of Iowa Community Credit Union, and South Slope Cooperative Communications.

NORTH LIBERTY– Several North Liberty churches will host the Make A Difference service project on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 8 a.m. to noon. Work teams will be fan out all over North Liberty performing community service for three hours. Service projects will include yard work, winter weatherization of homes, small construction jobs and many other projects, at no cost, to improve lives in the North Liberty community.
Everyone is welcome to participate. Children and youth are welcome with their families. This is a great way to include the whole family in serving the community.

Clippers vex Vikettes

CCA wins, 3-0, against Vinton-Shellsburg

TIFFIN– The Creek Girls, under the leadership of head coach Jackie Clubb, knocked off the Vikettes of Vinton-Shellsburg, 3-0, in varsity competition Tuesday, Oct. 6, in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School gym. Corrine Schwarting’s dozen kills led the Clippers, backed up by 10 from Alyssa Weldon.
CCA overcame an early deficit in game one for the 25-20 win, with kills from Ashley Prusha and Schwarting. Game two also saw the Creek Girls battling early from behind. An apparent ace serve from Alyssa Weldon gave them a 7-6 lead on their way to a 25-17 win before taking the third set 25-20.

Douglass wins, varsity boys third

WELLMAN— Clear Creek Amana’s Eric Douglass won the boys’ varsity race Monday, Oct. 5, at the IMS Invitational cross country meet in Wellman. Douglass covered the 5K course in 17:11.95, nearly six seconds ahead of second-place Peyton Miller of Mid-Prairie. The Clipper boys placed third in team points behind Mid-Prairie and Williamsburg.
Ben Szot was sixth in the boys junior varsity (JV) race with a time of 19:51.05. The Clippers ran a partial team with four men competing.

Spectacular Senior Night for West

Trojans pick up second win, 63-27, over Hempstead

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans put on quite a show Friday, Oct. 9, as they celebrated Senior Night with a 63-27 win over Dubuque Hempstead. The win elevated the Trojans to 2-5 overall, 2-0 in Class 4A District 7, while the Mustangs slipped to 5-2 overall, 1-1 in district play.

West varsity squads finish fourth at MVC Super Meet

WATERLOO– Iowa City West High cross country squads competed in the 2015 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Super Meet Thursday, Oct. 8, at Byrnes Park in Waterloo. The varsity boys and the varsity girls posted fourth-place finishes in team points, with City High winning the girls race and Cedar Falls taking the team title for the boys.
Tia Saunders led the Women of Troy with her third-place finish, in 19:14, while Patrick Karanja set the pace for the Trojan men with his 12th-place finish, in 16:24.

IC West wins, 122-48, over Waterloo East

CORALVILLE– It was the battle of the swimming Trojans as the West High Women of Troy met, and soaked, the Trojans of Waterloo East Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Coralville Recreation Center for a dual meet. West dominated the meet with wins in all events except the 400-freestyle relay for a 122-48 victory.
West High is in action again Saturday, Oct. 17, for a diving invitational at Marshalltown Community College starting at 10 a.m., as well as the Mississippi Valley Conference swimming championships at Cedar Rapids Jefferson, which start at noon.

Women of Troy fall prey to Tigers

Cedar Falls knocks off West, 3-1

CEDAR FALLS– The West High Women of Troy fell 3-1 Tuesday, Oct. 6, to the Cedar Falls Tigers in the Tigers’ cage. Cedar Falls took the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-13, before West High rallied to a 28-26 win in the third set. Unfortunately for West, the Tigers ended the night with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
Ali Tauchen led West’s offense with 13 kills, followed by Emma Norris (11) and Chandler Haight (7). Kei Lang served up three aces and Tauchen had three solo blocks.
