6th consecutive year at state tournament yields another second-place finish for West

DES MOINES– If there was an underlying theme to the Iowa City West High boys’ 2016 Class 4A State Basketball Tournament experience, it had to be, “We needed to play better.”
The West High Trojans, in their sixth-consecutive state tournament appearance, knocked off Des Moines Hoover in the first round and Cedar Falls in the semifinals before falling 46-39 to West Des Moines Valley in the championship.

Robison takes over boys’ program, sees opportunities

TIFFIN– After 10 years leading the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys track and field program, coach Tony Brack resigned last year, and his three-year assistant, Ben Robison, took the helm of both the boys cross country and track programs.
Robison is assisted by Karl Vogel, Jackson Litterer, Ronnie Hughes and Matt Hoch and inherits a squad with two returning state qualifiers in the form of Eric Douglass (1,600 and 3,200-meter runs) and Derek Toy (400-meter hurdles). Douglass is a senior while Toy is a junior.

IOWA CITY– The Mississippi Valley Athletic Conference (MVC) released its 2015-2016 Boys and Girls All-Division selections for bowling on Thursday, Feb. 25. Six Women of Troy and five Trojans made the cut for this season.
Patrick Wood, recently crowned as the boys’ Class 3A State Champion, was a West Division First Team pick with Jacob Fisher and Jordan Tiegs earning Honorable Mention. Matthew Bertell and Nicholas Rohm were named to the division All-Academic squad.

WAVERLY– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) track and field varsity boys were in action Tuesday, March 8, at the Wartburg College Indoor Meet in Waverly.
Jack Wingert posted the Clippers’ best individual finish in a running event with a ninth-place showing in the 800-meter run in 2:18.16, while the 4x800-meter relay team posted a seventh-place showing in 9:13.98. Carter Hertel tied for sixth place in the shot put with a 43’-11” effort to lead the Clipper throwers.

New technology upgrades keep county jail functioning

IOWA CITY— It’s the same old jail, but with a high-tech difference after a major technological upgrade.
After voters in Johnson County repeatedly defeated bond referendums that would have replaced the County Jail, the County Board of Supervisors took action in October 2014 to extend the life of the existing facility.

North Liberty resident wins human rights award for community work

NORTH LIBERTY – RaQuishia Harrington has only one voice.
But she uses it to speak for thousands.
Harrington, who lives in North Liberty, is the site director for the Broadway Neighborhood Center in Iowa City, part of the Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County.
As a social worker, the concept of human rights is immensely important to Harrington’s day-to-day responsibilities. To her, human rights means everyone should be guaranteed the opportunity to do, to be, to exist– equally.

SWISHER– What started as a hobby for Swisher resident Tracy Griffin has turned into not just a career, but a reflection of her passion and personality.
Griffin is the owner and chief photographer of T Marie Portraits and Photo Booth.
About eight years ago, Griffin and her family were hiking through Palisades Park on a nice fall afternoon, and she happened to have a camera with her. She took photos of her children to commemorate the day.

Public health alert for chicken products that may contain metal

WASHINGTON, D.C.– The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert to notify the public of a recall conducted by Maxi Canada, Inc., a Québec, Canada, establishment, involving approximately 103,752 pounds of chicken product that may be contaminated with metal pieces. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) notified FSIS of the recall, which affected products exported to the United States.

IDOT to hold March 30 public information meeting regarding Forevergreen Road improvements

NORTH LIBERTY– The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) will hold a public information meeting Wednesday, March 30, from 5-6:30 p.m. at the North Liberty Recreation Center, to discuss the proposed improvements to West Forevergreen Road from east of Kansas Avenue to Highway 965 in North Liberty.
The meeting will be conducted utilizing an open forum format. Iowa DOT staff will be present to informally discuss the proposed improvement. No formal presentation will be made.

Shueyville United Methodist Men’s Pancake Supper April 1

SHUEYVILLE– Shueyville United Methodist Men’s Pancake Supper will be held Friday, April 1, from 5-7 p.m. at the church.
The pubic is invited to attend and enjoy good food and fellowship with friends.
The all-you-can eat supper includes pancakes, eggs, ham, sausage, hash browns and beverage. This supper is used to support mission activities both at home and around the world.
The church is located at 1195 Steeple Ln. NE in Shueyville.
The cost for the supper is adults $6, ages 3-12 $3, and those under 3 are free.

CCA to hold district-wide Color Fun Run to benefit student programming opportunities April 9

TIFFIN– A district-wide Color Fun Run benefitting the Parent Teacher Groups at all four elementary schools in the Clear Creek Amana School District will be Saturday, April 9, with a 5K race beginning at 9 a.m. and the 1 mile commencing at 10 a.m. This will be a fun, family-friendly event complete with color stations.
Both routes begin at Clear Creek Amana High School located in Tiffin and will pass by multiple color stations. Runners should be prepared for some colorful fun.

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) workshops available

IOWA CITY– In the last few weeks the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was found in Iowa City. This pest is a destructive pest of ash and it has been present in the State of Iowa since 2010. Specialists from ISU Extension and Outreach Entomology, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, the City of Iowa City, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources/Forestry Bureau will present information on this pest on March 31 at the Johnson County ISU Extension and Outreach Office, located at 3109 Old Highway 218 S.
