By Lori Lindner

NORTH LIBERTY– Bids on a city painting project have come in significantly lower than expected.
At their July 23 meeting, the North Liberty City Council approved a bid of $186,250 from Central Tank Coatings of Elgin, to repaint one of the city’s two water towers. The project was originally estimated to cost over $300,000.

ICCSD school eRegistration now open

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District has opened eRegistration for the 2013-2014 school year. Parents and guardians are asked to register their students through Power School at www.iowacityschools.org. Assistance with this process will be available at elementary registration day on Friday, Aug. 9. Elementary students who complete eRegistration before Aug. 9 do not need to attend the registration at their school. Secondary students must attend their designated registration day, but completing eRegistration beforehand will make the process shorter.

Should Coralville funnel funds to private business?

Since the mid-2000s, the City of Coralville has been engaged in significant economic development projects that have been both hailed as visionary and necessary for the community’s growth, and criticized as unfair and irresponsible to taxpayers. In more recent years, the city has fallen under greater scrutiny for its TIF practices and continued participation in providing financial incentives to private enterprise. This is the third in a three-part series examining the city’s current fiscal status, its economic decision making and the concerns of area citizens who question both.

NLYBS continues to be a big hit for NL youth

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball league (NLYBS) recently completed its 21st year of providing recreational level baseball and softball opportunities for nearly 900 boys and girls, ages four to 13. While the majority of kids playing in NLYBS are from North Liberty, the league also has participants from Coralville, Solon, Tiffin and other area communities. In the 2013 summer season, NLYBS had 72 teams playing from May through June, with junior and senior softball and baseball teams involved in tournament play to complete the season.

State hopes dashed in the dust

WILLIAMSBURG– The 2013 baseball season came to a sudden end last week for both the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers and Iowa City West High Trojans in substate action.
The Clippers fell 11-3 Tuesday (July 23) on the road in Williamsburg against the rival Raiders. The class 3A Substate 5, District 10 game was a continuation of Monday’s suspended game, which was halted at the end of four innings due to lightning. The contest was tied 3-3 at the time.

JECC passes emergency communications test

Center functions well during June’s severe weather

JOHNSON COUNTY– County residents should be glad to hear that at least one return on their investment equals better safety for everyone.
North Liberty Mayor Tom Salm is a member of the policy board for the Joint Emergency Communications Center (JECC), the central facility that dispatches emergency resources and personnel from fire departments, law enforcement agencies and medical responders countywide.
Salm told the North Liberty City Council earlier this month that June’s severe weather incidents put the JECC facility and its personnel to the test, and all passed with flying colors.

The day was filled with games and food, a picnic and friendly competitions held at Penn Meadows Park and the North Liberty Recreation Center. The evening brought a Hairball concert at Liberty Centre Park, sponsored by the University of Iowa Community Credit Union. (photo by Lori Lindner)

North Liberty puts out call for bids on $400K water tower paint job

NORTH LIBERTY– Some North Liberty residents may soon notice a tangible shroud of mystery hanging over one northeast part of the city.
Literally.
The city’s water tower on 240th Street is scheduled to be repainted this year, and the process requires a large curtain to be draped over the entire structure in order to contain any debris it might create.

Highway 965 in NL to be reduced to a single lane on Friday for road work

NORTH LIBERTY– Workers are expected to pour road shoulders at the intersection of Pheasant Lane and Highway 965 on Friday, July 26. Highway 965 will be open to north and south bound traffic, but the highway will be down to a single lane with flaggers around the intersection. Residents should allow for extra travel time.

Babe Ruth baseball winds up for new fall league

Registration deadline Aug. 3

NORTH LIBERTY– The community of North Liberty has played baseball for nearly 100 years now; can there possibly be anything new?
Surprisingly, there is. The North Liberty Babe Ruth Baseball League– historically played through the summer– will now offer structured games in the fall as well.

West one game away from state

4-2 win over Jefferson J-Hawks sends Trojans to substate final

IOWA CITY– It’s hard to beat a team three times in one season. So says the conventional wisdom as well as many coaches and sports writers.
It’s among their top-10 clichés.
However, Friday night (July 19) the West High Trojans showed the phrase has some truth in it as they initially struggled against Cedar Rapids Jefferson before winning 4-2 in a first round game in substate action at home. West had beaten the J-Hawks 11-0 and 6-3 almost a month ago and entered the contest No.1 in the substate 6 bracket with a 32-7 record while Jefferson was the No. 6 seed at 12-26.
