CCA Supper for “Old Folks” Nov. 5

TIFFIN– On Saturday, Nov. 5, the CCA Student Assistance Team and Interact Club hosts its annual Supper for “Older Folks.” In other words, those aged 55 or older are invited to supper. Supper for “Old Folks” will serve turkey, ham mashed potatoes and a potluck of dishes the 30 or so kids bring to share. Early voting at library Saturday, Oct. 29

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty residents and all other eligible voters can vote early in the 2016 Presidential Election Saturday, Oct. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the North Liberty Community Library.
Those not registered can also register at the library, although an ID and proof of residency are necessary due to a requirement concerning registration 10 days prior to the election.

Liberty defeats Marion, 2-1

IOWA CITY– The Liberty High Lady Lightning made a statement in their final home match of their inaugural season on Thursday, Oct. 13, at Iowa City West High, as they defeated the Marion Indians, 2-1. The Lightning flashed for a 25-19 first-set win, but quickly fell into a deep pit in the second set. However, the Liberty Ladies steadily fought back and continued to narrow the gap, while keeping the Indians short of the final set point. The Indians closed the deal with a 25-19 win. A hard-fought third and final set saw the Lightning win, 15-12.

MOUNT VERNON– The Marion Indians were crowned the 2016 WaMaC Conference volleyball champions Thursday, Oct. 13, in Mount Vernon after knocking off West Delaware, 2-1 (25-20, 23-25, 15-0), in the finals of the championship bracket.
Clear Creek Amana (CCA) took the consolation bracket’s runner-up spot after falling to Williamsburg, 2-0 (21-25, 21-25).

Iowa City West crushes Linn-Mar, 50-7

MARION– The Iowa City West High Trojans improved their chances of a playoff berth Friday, Oct. 14, with a 50-7 pounding of the Linn-Mar Lions in Marion. The win improved West’s overall record to 6-2 and 3-1 in Class 4A District 8 behind Cedar Rapids Kennedy (5-3/3-1) and presumptive district champion Cedar Rapids Prairie (7-1/4-0).
Trojan defense kept the Lions caged on their end of the field throughout the first half, denying Linn-Mar the chance to cross the 50-yard line offensively until the final minute of the half.

Davenport Assumption sinks CCA, 33-20

DAVENPORT– A trio of touchdowns by Jared Eckrich wasn’t enough to keep the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers afloat as they clashed on the gridiron with the Knights of Davenport Assumption Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Brady Street Stadium in Davenport. The Knights won the Class 3A District 4 contest, 33-20, improving their record in the district to 5-1, tying with West Delaware. The Clippers fell to 4-2 in district play, tied with Marion.

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Linn-Mar Lions took the 2016 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) varsity volleyball tournament Saturday, Oct. 15, at Cedar Rapids Xavier High School. The Lions won 2-0 over Dubuque Wahlert in the championship match.

SOLON– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys cross country squad placed fourth in the WaMaC Conference Meet Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area in Solon. Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the meet with 35 points, followed by Western Dubuque (71), Marion (82) and CCA (122).
Wyatt Sedlacek led the Creek Boys with a 17th-place finish in 17:13 with Nick O’Connor and Cole Liebe right behind him in 18th and 19th place, respectively.

SOLON– Solon High School has lots to cheer about since Alissa McAtee became the cheerleading coach for football and basketball last year. A para-educator at Lakeview Elementary school, McAtee coached cheerleading from middle school up through high school varsity for seven years at the North Cedar school district in Clarence.

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City school board is back to square one.
After months of controversial discussion, the board voted 4-3 in favor of restoring the May 2015 secondary boundary plan at its Sept. 13 meeting. Board members Lori Roetlin, Chris Liebig and Phil Hemingway were opposed, while President Chris Lynch, Vice President Brian Kirschling and members Paul Roesler and LaTasha DeLoach were in favor of the plan. (DeLoach has since taken over the role as Vice President and was elected at the board’s Sept. 27 meeting.)
“Change is hard, it’s painful, and most people reject it,” said DeLoach.

Coralville man claims $1 million Powerball prize won with ticket bought at North Liberty Kum & Go

NORTH LIBERTY– Jeff Tomlinson Jr. of Coralville said he regularly stops at Kum & Go in North Liberty. Last week, that stop paid off.
Tomlinson purchased a Powerball ticket that won him $1 million in the Iowa Lottery’s Oct. 5 drawing.
“I didn’t really consider it a possibility, it was more of a fantasy of what would I do if I won,” Tomlinson told Iowa Lottery last week. “But I want to make sure that my family is well taken care of– now, in the future. Even my daughter, I want to make sure that she’s good for college and the future.”

Council members to consider recycling fee increase

NORTH LIBERTY– On Tuesday, Oct. 11, the North Liberty City Council was scheduled to consider an increase to the recycling charge households see on their monthly bills.
Since July 2015, North Liberty’s trash and recycling provider, Johnson County Refuse, has experienced cost increases of 650 percent, from $10 per ton to $65 per ton for recycling. The rate increase covers the additional cost and is a proposed 60 cents per household increase. If approved, the new rate of $5.15 per month would go into effect in the billing cycle.
