Warriors end Trojans’ championship quest with one kick

Cedar Rapids Washington defeats West, 1-0

DES MOINES– It’s the trophy nobody really wants, but it’s also the trophy awarded the most at the state soccer championships held at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines. It’s the participant trophy, which goes to teams eliminated in the quarterfinal round the first day of the three-day tournament. Losers in the semifinal round play one more match on Saturday in the consolation brackets for a third or fourth-place award, but first-rounders only get the participant hardware.

Creek Girls outlast Cardinals

OXFORD– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Clippers survived a visit from the Cardinals of Maquoketa Thursday, June 2, winning both halves of a doubleheader, 6-4 and 5-4.
The Cardinals struck first in the top of the opener’s second inning for a 1-0 lead. Courtney James evened the score in the bottom of the third after a line drive put her on base. Karsyn Stratton reached on an error, which allowed James to advance. A series of Cardinal miscues allowed James to keep on truckin’ for home plate.

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City West High Trojans finished the 2016 season with a loss in the quarterfinal round of the Class 3A state soccer championships, but rose to the top of the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC)’s All-Division selections. The Trojans, under Valley Division Coach of the Year Brad Stiles (and staff) were named the Team Champion, and 10 players earned a First Team, Second Team or Honorable Mention slot.

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls and boys varsity soccer teams ended the regular season at the top of the WaMaC West Division. The boys, at 6-1 in conference play, topped the field while the Creek Girls shared the top spot with the Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana, also at 6-1. Dyersville Beckman’s boys were tops in the East Division with a 7-0 record. 7-0 was also the showing for the Central DeWitt Lady Sabers.

VAN HORNE— Mother Nature and the Benton Community Bobcats gave the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers a pair of rough nights Tuesday and Wednesday, May 31 and June 1, on the Bobcats’ diamond in Van Horne. The Clippers dropped the first half of a doubleheader, 3-1, on Tuesday and had the nightcap rained out, prompting a return the following evening. Unfortunately, even though the weather was far kinder the second time around, Benton Community wasn’t, taking the game, 2-1.

Three Johnson County veterans added to Coralville Vets Trail

CORALVILLE– Three Johnson County veterans– Robert Hatcher, Rodney Walls and Gary Sopher– were recognized for their service by having their names added to the Veterans Trail at the Coralville Lake during the 2016 Dedication Ceremony held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. The three men joined the ranks of 185 other veterans, which have been added over the past 27 years.

NL Annual Free Fishing Weekend June 4 at Liberty Centre Pond

NORTH LIBERTY– Join other area families Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Liberty Centre Pond for a day of free fishing and aquatic education organized by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Scheels, Take A Kid Outdoors and the City of North Liberty. Bring your pole or an ID to check one out. Try to catch bluegills, catfish and more, right in town. Enjoy learning how to cast properly, take a look at live specimens of Iowa fish and turtle species, learn about water and boat safety and have a free hot dog.

NORTH LIBERTY– Kids may have little summer to enjoy the Penn Meadows Park splash pad if a contractor doesn’t soon take the plunge.
The City of North Liberty opened bid letting for the $100,000 project on May 17 but didn’t receive any bids, said City Engineer Kevin Strom at a May 24 North Liberty City Council meeting. Councilors voiced concern at the meeting as to whether the splash pad, to be located near the new Penn Meadows Park Pavilion, would be finished by the original August 2016 completion date.

City-wide garage sales June 9-12

NORTH LIBERTY– Local organizers have selected the weekend of June 10 for city-wide garage sales in North Liberty and have set up a website with information for sellers and buyers: northlibertygaragesales.com.
In addition to the website, garage-sale-goers will be able to pull up a mobile-friendly Google Map and find nearby sales by item categories.

Volunteer at Blues & BBQ July 9

NORTH LIBERTY– In preparation for its 10th year, North Liberty Blues & BBQ is recruiting volunteers. The annual festival requires some 300 community volunteers, doing jobs as diverse as set up and tear down, assisting kids into inflatable rides or with crafts, serving craft beer and directing cars to parking and much more.

NLFD Open House and grill-out June 18

NORTH LIBERTY– The NLFD would like to open its doors and invite the community to come see the firehouse and get to know the firefighters and the equipment on Saturday, June 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be fun and interactive “firefighting” games and demonstrations for all ages. The fire department will also be grilling out and serving lunch.

North Liberty Summer Reading Program kicks off

NORTH LIBERTY– Kids and adults alike can tackle reading this summer with the North Liberty Community Library (NLCL) Summer Reading Program, which officially kicked off Wednesday, May 25, at the Zeller Street Hills Bank in North Liberty.
The event showcased the various 2016 summer reading programs for babies, toddlers, school-age kids, teens and adults– all focused on the Collaborative Summer Library Program’s (CSLP) fitness, health and wellness theme. The programs are meant to tie in with the Summer Olympics occurring in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August.
