A visit from Capitol Hill

Clinton visits North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Two weekends, two former U.S. Secretaries of State.

Many in the community welcomed former Secretary Madeleine Albright on Sunday, Jan. 17, and former New York Senator and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Sunday, Jan. 24. Both women were here to stump for Clinton as she campaigns to become the Democratic nominee for the 2016 presidential election.
A crowd of about 700 people gathered in the gym at Garner Elementary School to hear Clinton’s speech.

IC Police Department arrests West High School bomb threat suspect

IOWA CITY– On Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 8:40 a.m., the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center (JECC) received a 911 call stating there was an explosive device at Iowa City West High School. The incoming call was not able to be called back by the dispatchers.
The bomb threat resulted in the evacuation of West High School and the bussing of more than 2,000 students to a secondary location, so the school could be searched for an explosive or incendiary device. Taking place at the time of the threat, a Johnson County special election polling place was forced to be relocated.

Assistant coaches needed for CCA youth football program

• Bollers will be sharing training videos and important program-specific training information, especially the way tackling is taught.

TOP SHELF Volunteer

NORTH LIEBRTY– Chelsea Ladlie first heard about the North Liberty Community Panty while searching the United Way website. She contacted the pantry to find out about the pantry’s volunteer opportunities and has been a volunteer for more than four years now.
Ladlie became involved at the pantry because she was working from home and wanted to get out of the house to be around people. She said one of the great things she has seen at the pantry is children asking for food donations to give to those in need instead of birthday presents.

Tiffin to hold public hearing on tiered minimum wage for minors

Council to see proposed ordinance Feb. 2

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin still has work to do in settling its minimum wage debate.
The council will hold a Feb. 2 public hearing on the issue; this time, to discuss a tiered wage system for workers under age 18.
Last October, after robust discussion and a public hearing in which city officials sought citizen input on an ordinance to increase the minimum wage countywide, the council ultimately took no action. The lack of action allowed the county’s ordinance to take effect Nov. 1, requiring employers to bump wages to a new minimum of $8.20 per hour.

While the 62-35 CPU win Friday, Jan. 22, was never in dispute, the Creek Girls came out guns blazing on their home hardwood.
