Ordinance seeks to mitigate lack of good topsoil in new construction sites

NL to address dirt-poor development

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– Modern construction has negated the usefulness of the idiom “cheaper than dirt.”
When it comes to developing land in urban areas, dirt has become quite pricey. Earth moving and grading is one of the higher expenses involved in construction projects. And in new residential developments, dirt plays a crucial role in storm water management, protecting the local watershed from contaminants and getting that high-dollar landscaping to grow.
Now, the City of North Liberty is taking steps to preserve its valuable dirt.

Migrating to Mexico

Project documents butterflies

KENT PARK— Every fall, monarch butterflies pass through Johnson County on their way to their winter home in Mexico, a journey of over 2,000 miles. Scientifically inclined minds have often pondered where the little wonders come from, where they go and what, if anything, affects their journey. During an afternoon event Saturday, Sept. 12, at F. W. Kent Park, 65 of the colorful fliers were tagged and documented as they headed south.
Kristen Morrow, a Naturalist with Johnson County Conservation, led the event for 80 people.
