Tiffin Volunteer Fire Department pancake breakfast April 10

TIFFIN– The Tiffin Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders will be holding a pancake breakfast on Sunday April 10. The department expects to serve approximately 1,200 people. The breakfast tradition continues at the Tiffin Fire Station in Tiffin from 6 a.m. to noon.

TIFFIN— Iowa’s legislative body, consisting of the Democrat-controlled Senate and the Republican-led House of Representatives, reached a compromise in the amount of State Supplemental Aid for the state’s school districts for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council buried thousands in bones for a dog park in its FY17 budget, but it may take proponents of the pet-friendly recreation area a while to dig up.
At its Jan. 28 budget meeting, the council agreed to reserve $10,000 per year from a surplus in the city’s hotel/motel tax. The item will be revisited each fiscal year and allocated to other areas if necessary.

New restaurateurs bring Central American cuisine to North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Mexican restaurants are a stone’s throw away in most U.S. cities, but Central American food is much harder to come by.
That’s no longer the case for North Liberty residents, who can now dine on fried plantains, yucas, pickled cabbage and more at El Taquito, a new Mexican-Central American fusion restaurant located in Beaver Kreek Centre.
“I know there are already several Mexican restaurants here in town, but we decided to focus on different foods so we wouldn’t be so much of a competition,” said El Taquito owner Maribel Romero.

CCA to hold district-wide Color Fun Run to benefit student programming opportunities April 9

TIFFIN– A district-wide Color Fun Run benefitting the Parent Teacher Groups at all four elementary schools in the Clear Creek Amana School District will be Saturday, April 9, with a 5K race beginning at 9 a.m. and the 1 mile commencing at 10 a.m. This will be a fun, family-friendly event complete with color stations.
Both routes begin at Clear Creek Amana High School located in Tiffin and will pass by multiple color stations. Runners should be prepared for some colorful fun.

Clipper Band to host Drive 4Ur School April 9

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clipper Band will partner with Carter Ford in Oxford for a Drive 4Ur School fundraiser April 9 from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the CCA High School parking lot in Tiffin.
Come test drive a new Ford, fill out a form and Ford will pay $20 per form (one per household, must be 18 years of age) up to 300 forms or $6,000. The money raised will go toward the CCA High School Band as it prepares to go to Washington, D.C., to march in the National Memorial Day Parade.  

Volunteers needed: Muddy Creek Cleanup April 9

NORTH LIBERTY– In observance of Keep America Beautiful Day, Boy Scout Troop 216 and Cub Scout Packs 216 and 275, the North Liberty Tree and Storm Water Advisory Board and the North Liberty Parks Department will lead the annual clean-up day to remove debris along Muddy Creek and the North Liberty Recreation trail April 9.
Public involvement, participation and education of storm water pollution prevention and management is the goal of this event.

“Make a Difference Day” at NL churches April 9

NORTH LIBERTY– Several North Liberty churches will host “Make A Difference Day,” a service project, on Saturday, April 9, from 8 a.m. to noon. Work teams from several local churches will be fan out over North Liberty performing community service. Service projects include yard work, small construction jobs, window washing, painting and many other projects at little or no cost, to improve the lives of the North Liberty community.
“Great group. They came in and discussed my needs and went to work,” commented one person.
“My team was the greatest,” was another comment.

CCA Marching Band Pancake Breakfast April 9

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana Marching Band will host a Pancake Breakfast Saturday, April 9, from 7 a.m. to noon at the Clear Creek Amana High School in Tiffin. Purchase tickets in advance from band members or call the school at 319-545-2364 for information on advance ticket sales; $5 per person or $20 per family. Cost at the door is $7 per person or $25 per family. Proceeds will help defray costs for sending the marching band to Washington, D.C., to march in the Memorial Day Parade in May.

Clippers run with the Tigers in Tipton

TIPTON– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers track and field teams opened the outdoor portion of the 2016 season with an appearance in Tipton’s Early Bird Co-ed Meet on Tuesday, March 29.
The Creek Girls were sixth in team points with 27 behind Solon, North Cedar, the host Tigers, Dyersville Beckman and West Branch, while the boys were seventh with 38 points behind Mount Vernon, Anamosa, West Branch, Solon, Iowa City Regina and Cascade.

Women of Troy win home track meet

West High’s Welch joins elite list with long jump debut

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy ran, threw and leapt their way to victory during their home track and field meet Tuesday, March 29. West won the meet with 174 team points with Linn-Mar a distant second with 122.
It was an especially good day for Valerie Welch who won the 100-meter hurdles with a record-breaking time of 15.26 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.36. Welch ran the anchor leg for the winning shuttle hurdle relay along with Peyton Steva, Kia Noibi and Grace Young with a total time of 1:06.62.

Trojans go 3-0 in home soccer Classic

IOWA CITY– Sustained winds in the 30-40 mph range– with gusts up to 50– coupled with temperatures in the 40s iced various varsity girls’ track meets Saturday, April 2, but on the soccer pitch at West High, it was business as usual. The West High Trojans hosted their Trojan Classic on Friday and Saturday with City High, Pleasant Valley, Ankeny, Cedar Rapids Washington, Linn-Mar, Muscatine and West Des Moines Dowling Catholic participating.
