Challenges ahead at CCA

Kuehl assumes superintendent duties at Clear Creek Amana

OXFORD– After three years as superintendent of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district, Denise Schares announced her retirement in February, setting in motion a short but intense search for a replacement.
“It’s a transition point, and I think for the district it’s a good time to bring somebody in on this really, really tremendous opportunity and challenge of enrollment growth,” Schares said at the time. Reluctantly the school board of directors launched the search, hiring G. Tryon and Associates and charging the firm with finding a highly qualified individual in two months’ time.

Johnson County Fair Queen Cassidy Bringle awaits the crowd’s choice on the winner for the Family Survivor competition on July 23. The friendly contest was just one of dozens of entertainment opportunities for fair goers at the 2013 Johnson County Ag and 4H Fair, held July 22-25. The 17-year-old Bringle won the crown from among 16 other queen contestants this year, a record number in the fair’s 19-year history. (photo by Eric Hawkinson)

A feat for the century

Local pumpkin patch sends the community a 5-acre birthday card

NORTH LIBERTY– At Colony Pumpkin Patch in North Liberty, you can walk through an entire century.
Literally.
The Colony farm at 2780 Front St. has been turned into a seasonal attraction for several years now, with a pick-out-your-own pumpkin patch started by the Dean and Katie Colony family in 2005. Last year, the Colonys added a weekend fall festival and corn maze to the fun.
This year, in honor of the community’s 100th birthday, the Colonys went the extra mile on the five-acre swatch of corn, and had the maze designed to replicate North Liberty’s Centennial Celebration logo.

Local Scout builds dugout for youth ball program

NORTH LIBERTY– After decades of protecting children from the sun and rain, the dugouts at Koser Park baseball field were showing their age. The wooden frames supporting the roofs were rotting, creating unsafe conditions for the youth using the field. The North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball League (NLYBS) has wanted to help the city correct the problem for several years, but lacked the manpower to tackle the project. This summer, things came together to make the repairs possible.
