Bill Heinrich rides the craft beer wave

SOLON– Beer is an amber alcoholic beverage brewed by the fermentation of cereals, usually malted barley, and flavored with hops. Beer has been around since at least the fifth millennium B.C. in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.
In 2012, according to The Beer Institute, Americans consumed 6.3 billion gallons of beer in the previous year with an individual average of 28.3 gallons.
Whatever the 2016 consumption statistics are, Brian Heinrich can rest assured his Kickshaw Barrel Works ORB, a small-batch craft beer, will have contributed to them.

Maybe next year: City declines parade move

Football parents ask for return downtown

SOLON– The City of Solon reluctantly rained on hopes to relocate the Solon High School Homecoming Parade back downtown later this month.
The request, presented at a Sept. 7 city council meeting by members of the Solon Football Club, came too late to deal with the logistics of closing Main Street, Mayor Steve Stange said.
The parade, set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, was before the council as a consent agenda item, but football parents were seeking to modify the event application and revert the route to its previous path.

The Mustangs brought the offense in the 3-0 win (25-18, 25-19, 25-14), racking up 38 kills against the Lady Spartan defense.

Spartans blow past Chiefs

Solon rebounds with 42-0 conference win over Keokuk

SOLON– Storms abounded across the Iowa farmscape on Friday, Sept. 9, forcing back the start time of Solon’s game against the Keokuk Chiefs to 8 p.m. The winds picked up and the first leaves of the fall began their chaotic dance across the streets of Solon as Acivities Director Zach Wigle’s tweet warned the Spartan faithful of the delay just as the deluge began its slow progression over the field.

The girls notched seventh place and placed two top-20 runners among the 20 teams and 107 varsity runners there.

Getting ready for the show

“It’s going to rival any professional theatre that I’ve ever worked in, or seen.” – Jessica Frerich

SOLON– It’s going to be worth the wait.
The Solon Performing Arts Center (PAC) is scheduled for completion at the beginning of December, with a grand opening for three performances of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” set for January.
The new 809-seat auditorium, an addition to the high school, was approved by Solon Community School District voters as part of a $25.5 million bond issue in September 2014, which also included the construction of a new fifth through eighth grade middle school.
