Solon yearbooks available

SOLON– To 2014 graduates and their parents: Yearbooks have arrived at the high school. Please stop by the high school office during the next two weeks to pick them up. If a sibling or neighbor will pick up a book in your stead, please email Jim Erickson at jerickson@solon.k12.ia.us to let him know who that might be or to ask him any questions if you have any. Due to prohibitive costs, we will not be mailing yearbooks to families who still have an address in the corridor.

Lady Spartans move to 3A with an eye on WaMaC title

SOLON– After being the runner-up team the past two years in the State Class 4A volleyball tournament, the Lady Spartans have dropped back to Class 3A for the 2014 season.
A 3-0 regional final win over Clear Creek Amana sent the Spartans to the state tournament where they knocked off Indianola 3-1, and Davenport Assumption 3-0 before falling 3-1 to Harlan in the championship last November. This season, coach Peter Gustin (in his third year with the program) returns three senior starters: Taylor Nearad, Jordan Runge and Jordan Smith.

Solon Sports Drink Scrimmage Aug. 22

SOLON– The Solon Athletic Booster Club will host its Fall Sports Kick Off and Sports Drink Scrimmage Friday, Aug. 22, at Spartan Stadium beginning at 5 p.m.
Admission is a free-will donation of sports drinks.
The concession stand will offer a brown bag special of a hotdog or burger, chips and a drink for $3. Come and join the club for the start of the fall season. Team photographs will start at 3:15 p.m. Information will also be available for people in attendance to learn more about the Solon Athletic Booster Club and volunteer activities.

Second annual Color Fund Run/5k in Oxford to be Sept. 27

OXFORD– The second annual color fund run/5k will be held in Oxford on Sept. 27 at 9 a.m. at Lions Park, 400 W. Wilson St. Last year the group raised more than $10,000 for the playground. This year, proceeds will be donated toward new technology. The public is invited to join. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. Check out the event on Facebook.

MRAP armored vehicle "just another tool"

Johnson County law enforcement agencies band together for armored vehicle

JOHNSON COUNTY– It’s just another tool in the toolbox for law enforcement personnel. So says Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek about the MRAP (Mine-Resistant, Ambush Protected) truck his department and five other law enforcement agencies across the county recently joined together to obtain.

School to host hearing on building proposals Aug. 25

SOLON– The Solon Community School District Board of Directors will be hosting a public hearing on the proposed new middle school and performing arts center Monday, Aug. 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the high school media center.
The two construction projects would be funded with a $25.5 million bond issue being placed before district voters in a Tuesday, Sept. 9, special election.
Architects for the project will provide a presentation on the project during the public hearing.
Members of the public will be given the opportunity to ask questions and express their views orally and in writing.
