The Dock asks for a second date

SOLON– The owners of the Dock want you to take a second look.
John and Kristen Ahlf opened the restaurant at 101 Windflower Ln., in June with the intent of providing a dining experience to satisfy the most refined tastes.
“The reviews were about 60-40,” said John Ahlf, referring to the comments several early customers posted online; sixty percent being positive, and the rest, not so much. “We read every single comment, good and bad.”
That’s what inspired the Ahlfs to make changes to the restaurant’s décor, menu and staff.

Board members visited with architect John Darveau of the architectural firm Struxture to consider two concepts for a new middle school as well as additional wings to the high school.

Lady Spartans drop opener

DeWITT– The Lady Spartans were cold and the Sabers were hot.
Solon’s girls’ basketball team dropped to 0-1 on the young season with a loss on the road at Central DeWitt, 58-39.

Central DeWitt jumped out to a 17-6 first quarter lead and had doubled up the Lady Spartans 35-16 at the half. The third and fourth quarters were even with each team putting up 23 points.

Iowa City Aerohawks radio-controlled airplane club puts on an aerial display

IOWA CITY– Mother Nature is not always the friend of clubs and organizations hosting outdoor events, as was evidenced Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Iowa City Aerohawks’ field next to the Iowa City Landfill. Winds of 20-25 mph from the east created a dangerous crosswind across the main runway, leading to about half of the scheduled events for the Aerohawks’ annual radio-controlled airplane show to be scrubbed. The members still managed to fill three hours with a variety of flying exhibitions.

Candy drop replica brings back memories for mother

IOWA CITY– Things were tough in West Berlin in the summer of 1948. The Soviets blocked all roads and railroads leading to the three Western-held sectors of Berlin. To provide food and other necessities of life to the stranded people, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) began an aerial supply operation, which became known as the Berlin Airlift. For 462 days, planes flew to Tempelhof Airport in Berlin loaded with food, clothing, even coal. Local children flocked to the fence surrounding the airport to watch the planes land and take off again.

Closer to compromise on Main Street

Council discusses potential agreement with general contractor

By Doug Lindner

SOLON– Solutions were on the horizon for the city last week, as Solon council members found quick consensus on a direction to resolve a dispute with the contractor for the 2012 Main Street improvement project.
A quick decision was also made regarding the city’s Tax Increment Finance (TIF) budget for the next fiscal year.
Short two members and juggling a quorum, the Solon City Council met last week at a bit of an accelerated pace, shuffling the agenda to arrange action items.
