Lady Spartans too much for CCA to handle

SOLON– Josie Durr opened last Thursday’s varsity game between the Solon Lady Spartans and the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers with a 3-point shot, and went on to lead Solon with 21 points in a 65-49 win.
The Clippers were coming off a 63-40 win Tuesday night on the road at Benton Community while Solon was regrouping from a 43-37 loss at Mount Vernon. However, the Creek Girls quickly found themselves in a hole they spent the rest of the game trying to dig out from.

Half the team with a chance at state

Seven Spartan wrestlers advance to district meet Saturday at Marion

MOUNT VERNON– Seven Solon wrestlers have advanced to compete at the district meet Saturday at Marion, the last step toward a berth at state.
Solon’s varsity wrestling program placed third at the sectional meet held Saturday, Feb. 8, at Mount Vernon, with a score of 218 points, just off the pace set by sectional champ Mount Vernon (242) and second place Williamsburg (227).
But more importantly, seeding was decided for the sectional meet, with the champion and runner-up advancing to the district tournament.

Spartans fall to Mustangs on the road

MOUNT VERNON– It was one of those games.
The Solon boys fell to the Mount Vernon Mustangs on the road Tuesday night (Feb. 4), 69-55.
“They (Mount Vernon) played well, and it was just kind of a buzz saw,” said Solon head coach Brad Randall. “It just wasn’t one of our best defensive games.”
The Spartans trailed by only five points at halftime, but every time the Spartans made a run, Mount Vernon’s Andy Decamp seemed to be there to match it. “He just shot the ball so well,” Randall said. “Even when we defended him well.” Decamp finished the game with 22 points on 8-12 from the field.

Youth group prepares for the big game

SOLON– It looks more and more like the Solon Community School District (SCSD) will put a bond issue before voters in the district in September.
The rough outline includes an auditorium addition at the high school, a new middle school and a few other add-ons at a cost of somewhere between $23 to $25 million.
And while it’s still all conceptual, the discussions are ongoing.

A circle of support

Prison Ministries provides volunteers who serve as individual mentors

JOHNSON COUNTY– Tammy has been in and out of prison five times.
Raised in an impoverished household with three younger siblings and a mother who would disappear for weeks at a time, stealing food, diapers and formula at the neighborhood grocery store became a regular necessity. When Tammy’s mother was around, she was frequently accompanied by men, each more violently abusive than the last. By the time Tammy was removed from the home, after she and her older sister had been sexually assaulted, using drugs to ease the pain and smooth the scars had become a matter of survival.
