Rebound at Maquoketa

Lady Spartans fall to Anamosa, Regina

SOLON– Solon’s girls rebounded after a disappointing loss at Anamosa, but the Lady Spartans dropped to 8-7 overall after going 1-3 on the week.
Finishing off a stretch where six of seven games were on the road, the Lady Spartans traveled to Maquoketa for a win before hosting Iowa City Regina Saturday and losing to the leaders of the Cedar Valley Conference, 51-45.
At Anamosa Tuesday night, Solon’s girls continued to struggle with offensive output. The Lady Spartans shot 30 percent from the field and 54 percent from the line, with no players in double figures in the 40-38 loss.


Solon wrestlers take second place at CPU dual meet

CENTER POINT– The Solon varsity wrestling team turned in a solid performance with a second place finish at the Center Point Dual Meet Tournament held this past Saturday. The team won three meets and lost two in the round-robin format.

Villagrana’s free throws lift boys at Beckman

SOLON– The Solon Spartans received a good growing experience courtesy of Dyersville Beckman Friday night.
Solon came out of Dyersville with a slim 57-55 win thanks to a pair of free throws by Solon point guard Emilio Villagrana.
“It was a very hard-fought, extremely physical game,” said head coach Brad Randall of the win. “You come out of there with a win, and you’ve really done something.”

Senior Advocates seek city funding for Old Gold Diner site manager

SOLON– Without senior dining, there’s no way to reach older residents of the community with needed programs.
The Old Gold Diner is the hub of the senior community.
When budget cuts forced the elimination of the site manager position and the introduction of packaged plastic meals, local supporters began rallying the troops.
As a result, representatives of Solon Senior Advocates met with Solon City Council members last week, seeking city funds to match county money for the site manager position.


Brushing up at Solon’s Corridor Arts

SOLON– Corridor Arts opened a Main Street studio in mid-October last year, and interest in art classes and painting lessons is growing.
Offering watercolor, acrylic and drawing lessons for children and adults, the studio is run by Susan Kennicott and Lianne Westcot as a space to practice art. Their lessons and classes are a great way for artists at all levels to set aside time and create with color, line, shape and the other components of two-dimensional aesthetics.


Solon KCs to host winter card party Jan. 19

SOLON– The Solon Knights of Columbus will hold its first annual community winter card party Saturday, Jan. 19, at 6 p.m. (after 5 p.m. Mass) at St. Mary Catholic Church hall. Euchre will be played and there will also be card games for the children. Please bring a dish or dessert. Juice for the kids will be provided. You may bring your own adult beverage. The public is welcome.


Legion hosts fundraiser breakfast Jan. 20

SOLON– A Veteran’s Memorial Breakfast will be held Sunday, Jan. 20, from 7 until 11 a.m. at the Solon American Legion. They will be serving pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, juice, coffee and milk for $7 adults and $4 children (6-12); children 5 and under eat free. All proceeds go to the Solon Veteran’s Memorial fund for maintenance purposes.


‘Generation Change’ is coming to Solon UMC

SOLON– Dave Ramsey’s new program for high school students and young adults is designed to lead teens to a better understanding of God, themselves and their money– and how it all works together. The program highlights themes of what scripture says about finances, creating a budget, and being debt-free. Classes will be held at Solon United Methodist Church on Saturday Feb. 2, 9, and 16, from 1 until 4 p.m. The cost is $26 and includes a workbook for each lesson. Solon Optimist Club to hold basketball contests Sunday, Jan. 27

SOLON– The Optimist Club of Solon will hold basketball contests, including dribbling, passing and shooting, on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 12:30 p.m., at the Solon Middle School gym.
The categories are ages eight through 13, boys and girls divisions. First, second and third place awards are presented to each age group, along with boys and girls champion awards.

Knights of Columbus free-throw championship on Jan. 27
