Third Annual Brett Smith Memorial Run/Walk, April 16

Keeping Brett’s memory alive

SOLON– Although Brett Smith passed away nearly four years ago, his memory is still going strong in the hearts of his friends, family and community.
The son of Jeff and Carmen Smith, Brett was diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukemia in January of his senior year. He was treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics but was later sent to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and passed away there on April 16, 2012.
In 2014, Sarah Drea and Brady Smith, first cousins of Brett, organized a running and walking event in honor of their family member.

Solon committee pitches $550,000 project to council

One percent-ish raised, 99 percent to go

SOLON– What at first was a trickle is now a babbling brook.
Armed with concept images, firmer cost estimates and plans for fundraising, members of a splash pad committee pitched all three to the Solon City Council at a March 2 meeting.
The group is looking to build momentum and compound the $5,000 already raised for the $550,000 potential project.

Prescribed burn planned for Solon Prairie in March or April

Few changes for school calendar

District’s calendar committee aimed for consistency in 2016-17 and 2017-18, approved by the board last month

What happened
The Solon Community School District Board of Education approved the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school calendars at its Feb. 8 meeting. Calendar committee representative Brandi Radcliffe presented the committee’s recommendations to the board in January, and the decision was made in February to approve the calendar as requested by the committee.

Horaks honored for land donation March 24

DES MOINES– More than 4,500 acres of Iowa land in 15 counties was permanently protected through many donations for conservation. The landowners, families and organizations associated with the 23 donations of land or land value will be recognized during a ceremony at the State Capitol.
Richard and Janice Horak, of Swisher, purchased their 80-acre slice of heaven outside of Shueyville in 1971, on Janice’s birthday, where they planted a tree nursery and raised their two sons. Only one subdivision bordered the acreage in 1971, today it is surrounded by a growing number of housing developments.

Solon junior becomes latest Gallon Grad

Annelyn Broghammer becomes fifth student to reach donor mark

IOWA CITY– The UI DeGowin Blood Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics recognized Annelyn Broghammer, a junior at Solon High School, Wednesday, March 2, for her commitment to blood donation.
Her eighth donation occurred at 3 p.m. in the blood center and, upon completion, Broghammer was recognized as a Gallon Grad and received a red cord to be worn during her high school graduation in May 2017.
Broghammer was the fifth local student to receive the designation and the first to do so during her junior year. All five students attended Solon High School.

Solon puts a scare into No. 1 seed Chariton at 3A state tournament

DES MOINES– Three quarters of magic just wasn’t enough.
No. 1 seed Chariton took a one-point lead into the final eight minutes and then seized control of the game to bounce Solon from the Class 3A State Basketball Tournament Tuesday in Des Moines.
Chariton survived the Spartans, 64-50, in a 3A quarterfinal dog fight at Wells Fargo Arena, but Solon, the biggest underdog of the tournament, led much of the way.
It wasn’t until the beginning of the fourth quarter, when the Chargers scored nine unanswered, that things became problematic for the Spartans.

You can come home again

SOLON– The high school hasn’t changed that much since 2007.
“There’s some small things here and there, but it’s still got some of the old marks I remember,” said Matt Lesan. “I went down to my old locker and it’s still got the green ink stain that happened in 2005.”
Lesan, 27, the leader in career points for the Solon boys basketball program (1,841), returned to his old team last year, this time as the coach of the junior varsity (JV) squad.

Third time the charm for Solon

Spartans earn state tournament berth with 49-42 substate win over Mustangs

CEDAR RAPIDS– Solon Head Coach Jason Pershing doubled down and won big.
In the first two meetings of the regular season between the Solon and Mount Vernon basketball teams, Mustang senior Connor Herrmann scored 24 and 29 points. Both were lopsided losses for the Spartans, who were outscored by a combined 44 points in the two games.
“He destroyed us the first two games,” Pershing said.
In the Class 3A Substate 4 final Monday night at the U.S. Cellular Center, Pershing was determined not to let it happen again.
