Clothing sought for Solon 175th anniversary style show

SOLON– Clothing wanted! In conjunction with the celebration of Solon’s 175th Anniversary, a committee from the GFWC Solon’s Women’s Club is preparing a style show. The committee is seeking items of clothing that would be applicable for the Style Show. Solon United Methodist Church to celebrate 175th

Celebration set for Sunday, Aug. 30

SOLON– As the community of Solon prepares to celebrate its 175th year– a quartoseptcentennial, according to Wikipedia– one of Solon’s longest-standing institutions will also turn 175 years old this fall.
Solon United Methodist Church will host a 175th Homecoming Celebration Sunday, Aug. 30, to commemorate the church’s origin, history and accomplishments over the last century and three-quarters.

Cring & Clazzy to perform at Solon Methodist Church July 26

SOLON– Jonathan Cring and Janet Clazzy have been dubbed by a recent reviewer as “the biggest two-piece band in America.”
The duo will appear on Sunday, July 26, at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church, 122 N. West Street in Solon.
Cring and Clazzy will share an entertaining and inspirational program called “567: Go Tell it from the Mount,” a modern-day look at The Sermon on the Mount, using music, stories and song.

RAGBRAI route

Keep your eyes out for about 15,000 people in Solon Friday, July 24, as RAGBRAI rolls through town. The designated route brings riders west on Sutliff Road from Lisbon, then south on Hwy 1, then west on Rock Street, then south on Dubuque Street, then west on Main Street, then south on Racine Avenue, then west on 180th Street (5th Street).

Fall Flag Football registration

Fall Flag Football registration is open and available until Aug. 7. All Pre-K through fourth grade Solon students should have brought home a registration form. Pre-K through fourth graders can register online at https://solon-iowa.cogran.com/.
Registration forms are also available at the Solon Parks and Recreation website or can be picked up at city hall. The coaches meeting will be held Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Solon City Hall. Practices can start the following week.

Solon man accused of sexual abuse

IOWA CITY– A Solon man has been charged with sexual abuse in the third degree, A Class C felony, and willful injury causing injury, a Class D felony, after a June incident at an Iowa City business.
According to a criminal complaint, Donald E. Born, 49, of Solon, is accused of assaulting an employee at Iowa Business Supply in Iowa City at approximately 4 p.m. on June 11.

No. 1 Solon faces No. 8 Center Point-Urbana in 3A semifinal Thursday July 23

FORT DODGE– It took the Solon Lady Spartans only three innings to take care of business in the opening round of the 2015 Iowa State Softball Tournament.
No. 1-ranked Solon clobbered unranked Clarke 18-0 in a Class 3A quarterfinal Tuesday, July 21, at the Harlan & Hazel Rogers Sports Complex north of Fort Dodge.
The Lady Spartans will face Center Point-Urbana (CPU) in a 3A semifinal Thursday, July 23, at 11 a.m. on Buena Vista University Field, with the winner advancing to the title game Friday at 12:15 p.m. on the same field.

Solon falls to Marion in substate baseball

SOLON– It wasn’t the postseason they’d been hoping for.
The Solon varsity baseball team fell to Marion 9-1 in a district semifinal Friday, July 17, in Solon.
Marion pitcher David Kuhn held the Spartans to a single hit and the Indians broke the game open in the third inning with six runs.
The Spartans ended the season 22-16, but were 12-4 down the stretch of the regular season, including doubleheader sweeps of Clear Creek Amana, Anamosa, Western Dubuque and Maquoketa.
Solon defeated Washington 10-3 on the road in the regular season finale July 14.

Volunteer to help restore Lake Macbride stone steps July 29

SOLON– Lake Macbride State Park will host a volunteer event on Wednesday, July 29, from 5-9 p.m. The project will involve repairing and clearing brush from the stone steps that lead to the Lake Macbride dam. Those interested in donating their time should meet at the Lake Macbride Fisheries parking lot at 5 p.m. Participants should bring work clothes, gloves and insect repellant. Solon Football Club, Legion give veterans trip of a lifetime

SOLON– A week-long salute to veterans held by the Spartan Football Club turned into an unforgettable trip for four of Solon’s former service men.
Last fall, parents of varsity football players organized a Salute to the Armed Forces night to be held during the team’s September home game against Marion. In addition to players wearing red, white and blue socks and flag stickers on their helmets, the game was dedicated to Solon alumni who had served in any branch of the military; those present were recognized during halftime.

2015 Spartan Youth Football Camp

SOLON– All students entering grades 2-8 interested in football are encouraged to attend the Solon Youth Football Camp Aug. 3-6. Cost of the program is $50. Grades 2-5 will attend 9-10:30 a.m. and grades 6-8 will attend from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Campers can expect to learn and apply fundamental skills applicable to football. In addition, campers will play lead up games and compete in various competitions.
Coaches will spend a great deal of time teaching fundamental techniques essential to player development.

Council approves land purchase for ground storage water reservoir

Site near SRNA will be home to 400,000 gallons of water

SOLON– The City of Solon is close to acquiring the land it needs for more water storage.
At a July 1 meeting, members of the Solon City Council approved a purchase agreement with St. Mary Catholic Church for 0.6 acres of land adjacent to the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA) at a price of $25,000. The cost includes a permanent easement for another 0.6 acres of ground owned by the church.
The land will serve as the site of a 400,000-gallon ground storage reservoir (GSR), which the city expects to build in the spring of 2016.
