JOHNSON COUNTY– Three area school districts have received state funding geared toward improving delivery of education in the upcoming school year.
The Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD), Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and Solon Community School District (SCSD) were approved to participate in the Teacher Leadership and Compensation System (TLS), beginning last fall.
It’s an initiative, long in the planning, and one that educators hope will have longevity and a significant impact on Iowa’s public education system.

Filling the gap

SolonFC tries to bridge between elementary and high school soccer

SOLON– Are you ready for some fútbol?
For more than 50 Solon kids and their families, the answer is a resounding “Yes!”
This is the second year for the SolonFC, a youth soccer club initiated by a few Solon parents who saw a gap in the action for kids who love soccer. While Solon’s Recreation Department runs spring and fall soccer leagues for children in preschool through grade six and Solon High School’s soccer teams pick up new freshmen each year, there were no local soccer opportunities for players in seventh or eighth grade.

Lady Spartans double up

Solon girls win home meet by 100-point margin

SOLON– Loading up with firsts in seven of the 19 events and with double-places in nine of 12 individual events, the Solon’s Lady Spartans more than doubled runner-up Vinton-Shellsburg’s score in the 2015 Denny Gruber Relays on April 21 in Solon.
With 213 points, Solon outran Vinton-Shellsburg (93 points) and the rest of the field; Mount Vernon (84), Marion (75), North Cedar (65), Iowa City Regina (63), Davenport Assumption (41) and Dyersville Beckman (36).

Spartans snag win at Denny Gruber Relays

Team scores were: Solon (134), Vinton (124), Mount Vernon (114), North Cedar (70), Regina (67), CCA (65), Beckman (60), and Assumption (41).
The team used depth and balance in the field and running events to capture the trophy.
Place winners included:
High jump: Matt Roeder, first, 5-10.
Long jump: Zach Nunemaker, first, 21-2 3/4; Halston Durr: second, 21-2 1/4.
Shot put: Kolby Melsha, fifth, 44-1/4.

Boys third at CCA, fourth at Maquoketa Valley

TIFFIN– The Solon boy’s track team competed in two meets this past week in preparation for the all-important and upcoming WaMaC and district meets to be held in the days ahead.
The Spartans placed third overall at Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Pacha Relays in Tiffin Thursday, April 30, and were fourth at a Maquoketa Valley meet Monday, April 27.
The Mount Vernon Mustangs won the team title with a 123 points, while Regina (110) and Solon battled for second and third place.

Boys toughen against ranked opponents

SOLON– Solon head coach Jeremy McMurrin knew it was going to be a tough week with three ranked opponents on the schedule.
The Spartan soccer team came away without a win but McMurrin was happy with the improvement he saw on the field.
“Minus a few people that have played club, we are just a bunch of athletes playing the game,” McMurrin said. “We have slowly started to improve our skills and knowledge of the game.”
Solon had won three in a row heading into the match-ups against ranked opponents, all on the road, including a 2-0 victory over Maquoketa April 28.

Solon girls fall in shoot-out to unbeaten Central DeWitt

DeWITT– It came down to penalty kicks for the Solon Lady Spartans and the Central DeWitt Sabers Friday, May 1.
And Central DeWitt was just one shot better.
On the wrong end of a 3-2 penalty-kick ending, Solon’s girls fell to undefeated Central DeWitt 1-0 in DeWitt.
“The DeWitt game was a fairly evenly matched game,” said head coach John Tucker. “Neither team was able to get the ball in the net during regulation, but we certainly had our opportunities. We played well, and fought hard.”
The loss dropped the Lady Spartans to 4-2 on the season, with a string of three road games this week.

First phase of improvements for Ely Road coming

Johnson and Linn counties partnering on three-phase project

JOHNSON COUNTY– Commuters between Linn and Johnson counties have a while before they will see work on Ely Road.
It’s coming in late August.
The first phase of Johnson County’s plan to upgrade Ely Road (W6E) will begin at the Linn County border and extend just four-tenths of a mile southward. Phase 1 includes replacing a deteriorated culvert and grading and widening the roadway’s foreslopes– the ground that goes from the shoulder to the bottom of the ditch.

Solon council extends interim administrator

Rasmussen to stay at least until August

SOLON– The Solon City Council needed more time.
Back in April 2014, council members approved a one-year contract for Cami Rasmussen to serve as city administrator, with the idea of eventually finding a long-term candidate for the post. Rasmussen stepped down from her job as mayor to assume the position, which was vacated by Cassandra Lippincott.
But the city has yet to interview a candidate for the permanent position, and Rasmussen’s year was set to expire April 28.
At a brief special session April 22, council members approved extending her contract to Aug. 1.
