Our Lord’s Church October Fest luncheon Saturday, Oct. 29

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will host October Fest on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The luncheon will serve three kinds of hot soup, hot dogs and chili dogs will also be served from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Kolaches, cinnamon rolls, cream puffs and lots of other baked goods will also be available. Cheese Curds from Ely’s Dan and Debbie’s Creamery will be on hand as will breads from Sykora’s Bakery. Kalona Ice Cream Bars will also be available for $2, however please call for large orders.
A review of Christmas gifts and crafts will be part of the event.

Solon Old Gold Diner planning for Christmas Tree Walk

SOLON– Last year’s Christmas Tree Walk at the Palmer House Stable was such a success, the Old Gold Diner is going to do it again. The Old Gold Diner is seeking representation from Solon area residents and clubs to serve on a committee to plan the 2017 event with an eye toward adding more features. Set-up for the Christmas Tree Walk is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 2. The tree walk will be held Saturday, Dec. 3, starting at 9 a.m. For more information or to volunteer, contact McAtee between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at 624-2551 (please try to avoid 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.).

Swisher Auxiliary Annual Turkey Homemade Turkey Dinner Nov. 5

SWISHER– On Saturday, Nov. 5, from 4:30-7:30 p.m., the Swisher Auxiliary hosts its Annual Homemade Turkey Dinner. Adult meals cost $10 and kids meals are $5. The Junior Auxiliary will host Turkey bingo upstairs through dinner. Bingo cost is $1 per game with winners receiving a turkey to take home. Arts and crafts will be offered for children attending the event during bingo.

Snipes running write-in campaign

Former council member running unofficially for seat

SOLON– Dale Snipes didn’t realize how much he missed being on the Solon City Council.
Snipes, 59, was appointed to the council in February 2015 and stood for election in November of that year. But when the hours of his employment changed, he made the decision to step down, and his letter of resignation was accepted July 7.
Afterward, he received comments from citizens expressing regret about his move, something he called “humbling.”

Family Day at Iowa Raptor Project Nov. 5

SOLON– The Iowa Raptor Project invites the public to the November Family Day featuring the Peregrine Falcon, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5.
Visitors will learn about the history of falconry and hunting with the Peregrine Falcon. The Raptor’s Nest will be open with arts and crafts and activities for kids. There will be staff and volunteers available to answer any questions.
The Raptor Center currently displays over 20 unreleasable birds of prey historically found in Iowa and is located within the Macbride Nature Recreation Area, 2095 Mehaffey Bridge Rd. NE, Solon.

SOLON– When both parties are that excited, something good has to happen. As results went up near the finish line of the Oct. 20 Class 3A state-qualifying cross country meet, it became official. Solon’s girls will be in the starting box at the 2016 state meet.

Spartans to face Benton Community in first round of playoffs Oct. 28

FAIRFIELD– The sky was swimming with hues of blue, red, and orange reminiscent of Jerry Moon’s oil landscape painting “Absolution” as the Spartan faithful made their sunset trek southwest to witness Solon’s 54-14 victory over Fairfield on Friday, Oct. 21. The team, once again showing its depth while building team morale by playing several positions deep, amassed 308 yards rushing and 177 yards through the air on offense, and defensively held the Trojans to 181 total yards rushing and 101 total yards receiving.

MOUNT VERNON– Solon’s varsity volleyball team saw its hopes for a postseason run shot down Oct. 19 against the Mustangs of Mount Vernon.
Ranked No. 5 in Class 3A, the Mustangs used a 37-19 kill advantage to sweep the Lady Spartans, 25-14, 25-15, 25-7, in a Region 8 quarterfinal match in Mount Vernon.
“I thought we came out aggressive but just couldn’t stop the runs,” said Solon Head Coach Sarah Ferin. “We switched to perimeter defense to help pick up the stronger hits which I think went well considering the amount of digs we had, but offensively we struggled to keep the ball in play.”

Haunted Trail Hike at Coralville lake Oct. 28-29

CORALVILLE–The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with the Friends of Coralville Lake, are hosting a Haunted Trail to be held at Coralville Lake on Friday, Oct. 28, and Saturday, Oct. 29, from 7-9 p.m. each night. The event is free and open to the public. It will take place on the Woodpecker Nature Trail, which starts near the Linder Point Campground. This will be the first time a haunted trail has been held at Coralville Lake and it is sure to be a scary, but fun-filled event.

SOLON– One by one, kindergarten students at Lakeview Elementary got up on their hands and knees and crawled out of the small gymnasium to the lobby where a fire engine was waiting outside.
It’s the same thing they should be doing if there’s smoke in their home– it’s a lesson taught every year by members of the Solon Tri-Township Fire Department.

Solon Legion hosting silent auction for disabled veterans Oct. 21

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will host a silent auction Friday, Oct. 21, beginning at 6 p.m. in support of the disabled veterans who will be deer hunting locally through a joint program between the Legion, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and English Outfitters.
The Legion invites residents of the community to bid on items at the silent auction. The proceeds will be used to support the disabled veterans hunting program.

Flu vaccination clinics at Solon High School Tuesday, Oct. 25

SOLON– The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) visits Solon High School Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 3:30-6 p.m., to administer flu vaccinations to the public.
The clinics offer flu shots QIV, High Dose Flu (for ages 65 years and older) and pneumonia vaccine (available upon prior request).
