City Administrator Cami Rasmussen initiated a discussion with the city council regarding the north trunk sewer line and water storage systems for the city at its Sept. 17 meeting.
No action was taken, but Mayor Steve Stange encouraged councilors to clarify their views on moving forward with the projects. Rasmussen indicated she received sufficient direction to move the projects forward.

Exorcising the Demons

Spartans take down Washington in rematch of 2013 semifinals

SOLON– The last time the Solon Spartans faced the Washington Demons, Solon had some trouble reaching the end zone.
The Spartans made sure that didn’t happen again.
Solon converted two long fourth downs in the red zone Friday night and defeated Washington 28-17 in a rematch of 2013’s 3A semifinal at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
In the 14-9 loss last year, Solon settled for three field goals.
Friday, Spartan quarterback Brandan Childs hooked up with two different receivers for two second-quarter touchdowns, both of them coming on fourth and long.

Boys sixth, girls seventh at Anamosa Invitational

Düster places 16th, Weetman 25th in run around lake

ANAMOSA– In a rainy fall, muddy hills and low-lying prairie paths around Central Park Lake mean slippery footing for the annual Anamosa Invitational cross country race. This fall, good turf and dry hills meant great running conditions.
Solon’s boys were sixth in the 13-team competition, paced again by junior Simon Düster. The girls were seventh in a field with five ranked 3A and 2A competitors, with junior Trisha Coberly again running lead for the Lady Spartans.

Lady Spartans take care of No. 11 Dyersville Beckman

DYERSVILLE– The stage was set for an upset.
No. 11 Dyersville Beckman had taken the first set from the No. 1-ranked Solon Lady Spartans in a 3A WaMaC East showdown in Dyersville.
Solon head coach Peter Gustin called it a sluggish start.
“We dropped the first set 20-25, with 20 of their points coming off our errors,” Gustin said. “Minimizing our errors has been an issue, but even that amount of errors in one game is an anomaly.”
With 19 kills from Jordan Smith and 16 from fellow senior Jordan Runge, Solon won the next three sets and took home a 3-1 win.

Mary’s Meals provides food and education to help impoverished children around the globe

Just one good meal

SOLON– In the early 1990s, Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow went to Romania with the simple goal of bringing food and clothing to children’s hospitals.
However, once he arrived, his mission changed drastically.
After wandering into a room where he admits he probably wasn’t supposed to be, he was greeted with the sullen, hopeless faces of about 50 children, long forgotten and abandoned by society. Some, even at the age of 12 or 13, couldn’t even walk, simply because no one had bothered to teach them.
At that moment, he knew he had to do more than just provide them basic aid.
