35 COVID-19 cases in Johnson County

State total jumps to 105

JOHNSON COUNTY The number of COVID-19 cases in Iowa is increasing daily.
The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced the first three cases in Johnson County Sunday, March 8, while Gov. Kim Reynolds announced a third case of community spread in the state Sunday, March 16, and recommended the state close all schools for a period of four weeks.
On Monday, March 23, Reynolds and the IDPH announced 15 additional positive cases, bringing the states total to 105.

IOWA CITY– Farmers tend to have a knack for fixing things from fences to tractors, and anything in-between. Johnson County’s farmers have been itching for an opportunity to fix problems they see with the county’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), which was passed in December by the board of supervisors and implemented on Jan. 15. The Johnson County Farm Bureau took the first step in making repairs and adjustments to the UDO by submitting an application to amend the UDO’s text, at a cost of $750.

DES MOINES– Drake University postponed the 2020 Drake Relays, presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom, along with related special events and programs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 111th edition of the event was scheduled for April 22-25 at Drake Stadium.

Lady Spartans’ JV and varsity soccer rosters delayed due to COVID-19

SOLON– Although the season start is still up in the air due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lady Spartans’ soccer team is at home on the edge of their seats.
With the delay of the Lady Spartans’ opening game, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., at Spartan Stadium against the Liberty High Ligthning on Friday, March 27, due to Gov. Kim Reynolds’ recommendation, the season holds many questions. Not the least of which is the naming of the varsity and junior varsity (JV) rosters, according to Head Coach Amanda Paulson.

Johnson County is ground zero for COVID-19 in Iowa

IOWA CITY– Wash your hands. Cover your cough. Avoid touching your face. Stay home if you’re sick.
Officials for Johnson County, area hospitals and the State of Iowa reiterated the basic precautions to take to avoid the spread of 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Fifteen of the state’s 22 COVID-19 cases are in Johnson County as of March 16, and most were passengers on an Egyptian cruise arranged through the Hills Bank and Trust Friends Club Feb. 19 to March 2.

CCA makes tentative plans while seeking guidance from the state

JOHNSON COUNTY– All area public K-12 school systems have closed and all activities canceled through April 12.
Schools across the state began Monday to follow the recommendation of Gov. Kim Reynolds to close Iowa schools for four weeks due to the spread of 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Local schools were already closed from March 16 through Friday, March 20, for spring break.

JOHNSON COUNTY– Events are being canceled and local cities are encouraging residents to limit their interaction in response to local cases of 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
“The COVID-19 pandemic is unlike anything we’ve faced in our lifetimes,” observed Solon City Administrator Cami Rasmussen.
The cities of Solon, North Liberty and Iowa City have closed their libraries and community centers effective immediately to mitigate the spread of disease.
In North Liberty, the closure is scheduled to last through Sunday, April 12.

Kevin Miller steps down as Solon head football coach

SOLON– Head Coach Kevin Miller never missed a football practice in 19 years.
“Never. No matter how sick,” he said the day after hanging up his cleats. “I felt that’s what I needed to do to, to provide the necessary example for our players. That was my own choice.”
Miller, 49, submitted his letter of resignation from the coaching position Wednesday, March 11, and spoke to his team the same day.
A Solon native, he graduated in 1989 after his team won the school’s first state title in the fall of 1988.

Dan Gable Wrestler of the Year Award recipients named

CEDAR FALLS– Fareway Stores, Inc. and BodyArmor presented the Dan Gable Wrestler of the Year Awards, in coordination with IAwrestle and IWCOA. Three finalists from each of the three state wrestling classes and three women finalists attended an awards ceremony in advance of the premier invitational, War at West Gym.
Fans had the ability to vote once per day for the top wrestler in each category until Feb. 7 on IAwrestle.com. Public votes were tallied and the top voted wrestler received an extra vote towards the IWCOA committee vote. The following athletes were recognized as 2020 recipients:

COVID-19 makes it ‘wait and see’

DUBUQUE– With spring break this week, it is especially quiet in the classroom and out on the track. What lies ahead with the coronavirus pandemic should show major changes in how classroom and outside school activities are conducted through spring, in Solon, in Iowa and across the nation.
But there has been a start. For Solon’s girls, that came March 3, at the University of Dubuque. With a fourth-place finish among 20 Eastern Iowa teams, the Lady Spartans logged 40.5 points.
On the way there, they picked up first- through fifth-place points in six of the 11 indoor events.

Lady Spartan Holtkamp named to Print Sports Writers 3rd Team

DES MOINES– The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association (IPSWA), founded in February of 2018 to carry on the tradition of newspapers selecting all-state teams for Iowa high school sports, announced its 2020 Girls Basketball All-State Teams on Tuesday, March 10.
Class 5A, West Des Moines Dowling Catholic senior Caitlin Clark was named IPSWA Miss Iowa Basketball 2020. The honor was conveyed after she averaged 33.7 points per game (scoring more than 2,500 points in her career) and shooting 50.9 percent from the field, while making 84 three-pointers.
