Solon brothers return to play in Gabe’s Iowa City Oct. 18

IOWA CITY– Joe and Jake Anderson will be returning to Gabe’s nightclub in Iowa City for a second time. The two brothers, originally from Solon, and now centered in St. Paul, Minnesota have formed the heavy-metal band Cantharone. Cantharone will be playing at Gabe’s Iowa City on Saturday, Oct. 18. The band will be playing songs from their second EP, scheduled to be released Oct. 31. Cantharone will be playing with The Savage Hacks, ASEETHE and Jucifer. The doors open at 8 p.m., and the show starts at 9 p.m. Must be 19 years old to attend and there is a $10 admission charge for this show.

Solon’s Sam Miller is finalist for Superintendent of the Year

CLIVE– Sam Miller, superintendent of the Solon Community School District, was a finalist for the 2014-15 Iowa Superintendent of the Year award sponsored by the School Administrators of Iowa.
“SAI is pleased to recognize leaders who are dedicated to advancing student achievement by providing students a quality education,” said Dan Smith, the association’s executive director.

Solon firefighters will help you change your smoke alarm batteries

SOLON– The Solon Fire Department is urging families in Solon to install and maintain working smoke alarms. Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms save lives every day across the country.
And the department members are ready to help.
From 9 until 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, the Solon Fire Department will conduct a free “Battery Up” campaign offering in-home fire prevention to residents in need of assistance.

Spartans smother Cardinals

SOLON– The defense made some big hits and the offense made some big plays.
And that added up to a 42-0 win for the Solon Spartan football team Friday night against visiting Maquoketa.
The Spartans moved to 6-1 on the season with a conference showdown set for Friday, visiting 5-2 Western Dubuque at Epworth. Western Dubuque remains undefeated in Class 3A District 4 competition, with Cedar Rapids Xavier and Solon close behind, each sporting a single loss.
Maquoketa dropped to 1-6.
Solon scored early and often Friday at Spartan Stadium, taking a 28-0 lead into halftime.

West Delaware halts Lady Spartan comeback

Solon can’t overcome unforced errors in 3-1 loss to No. 2 team

SOLON– West Delaware came into its match with Solon having lost only a single game in the season.
Afterward, the No. 2 volleyball squad in Class 4A had only lost two.
West Delaware came to Solon for a WaMaC East showdown Oct. 9, and came away with a 3-1 win over the No.1-ranked (3A) Lady Spartans.
Solon fell behind 2-0 in closely-contested sets (25-22, 25-23) and roared back to take the third set 25-11, but West Delaware returned the favor in the decisive fourth set with a 25-16 win.

Prelude to postseason: Girls sixth at North Linn

TROY MILLS– It will take a couple leaders to push the pack as Solon’s cross country season races into the home stretch. Thursday’s WaMaC conference meet is followed by the state qualifying meet one week later.
Leading into that stretch, the Spartans are coming off the North Linn meet, with 18 (girls) and 19 (boys) full teams and several incomplete (less than five runners) squads circling the crowded Troy Mills campus. The boys were 11th, with just two top-50 runners in the crowded 1A through 3A field. The girls edged Central Clinton of DeWitt for the sixth spot.

NORTH LIBERTY– The candidates for North Liberty mayor set the dichotomy between themselves early in an Oct. 8 forum held in the North Liberty City Council chambers.
Incumbent North Liberty Mayor Gerry Kuhl will face resident Amy Nielsen in the Nov. 4 election.
In his opening statement, Kuhl said that while he brings years of background in city government to the chair, his opponent has never served on a city board or commission.

Friends of the library host 10th annual waffle breakfast

Solon’s former fire chief looks back on 40 years as a firefighter

SOLON– For 40 years, Dan Smith responded to emergencies in Solon, Iowa City and the surrounding area as a firefighter. In September, he put his helmet on the rack for the final time as he retires from the Solon Fire Department.
Smith is the son of the late Vernon Smith, a man who served the community as mayor, town cop, city councilman and volunteer firefighter (for eight years).

Council, fire chief review need for Knox-Box requirement

SOLON– It’s time to lock up a safety issue in Solon, according to Solon Fire Chief Bob Siddell.
At the Oct. 1 Solon City Council meeting, Siddell reported on Tri-Township Fire Department activities, which included an update on plans for Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5 through 11.
“The Knox-Box situation– I need to get this thing straightened out,” said Siddell.
A Knox-Box, known officially as the KNOX-BOX® Rapid Entry System, is a small, wall-mounted safe that holds building keys for fire departments, Emergency Medical Services, and law enforcement to retrieve in emergency situations.

Solon volleyball digging for a cure

SOLON– The Solon varsity volleyball team will be “digging for a cure” Thursday, Oct. 9, during a 7:30 p.m. match against West Delaware.
The team will be hosting a bake sale, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction featuring a football signed by former NFL player Aaron Kampman during the match. It will also be senior night for the team. Proceeds will go to the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center in Cedar Rapids.
