DES MOINES– At a public hearing for Johnson County’s controversial Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), State Representative Mary Mascher (D-86) warned, “I am asking you to listen to what the people here have to say because if you don’t, we will end up dealing with it in the legislature.”

COVID-19 presumptively confirmed in eight Iowa residents

DES MOINES– Gov. Kim Reynolds Monday signed a Proclamation of Disaster Emergency, after testing at Iowa’s State Hygienic Laboratory indicated eight presumptive positive cases of 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Iowa residents.
Seven of the eight cases are Johnson County residents.

Old Mill Creek Part 4 approved

Developer calls for codified park requirements

SOLON– Another 17 residential lots and a small park area are on the way for the Old Mill Creek subdivision.
Council members approved a preliminary plat and developer’s agreement for Part 4 of the residential development at a March 4 meeting.
At the end of the meeting, however, developer Cory Hodapp recommended codification of the city’s park requirements and objected to some engineering costs.

Library board looking into solar power

New roof also needed for 19-year-old building

SOLON– Solon’s library board is exploring a new roof and the possibility of utilizing solar energy.
According to Library Director Kris Brown, the board met in January with representatives of Moxie: America’s Solar Company, of North Liberty, regarding options through a third-party lease.
The topic is on the board’s agenda for upcoming meetings, Brown told members of the Solon City Council during a March 4 meeting.

SOLON– Three Solon juniors earned WaMaC Conference honors following the release of the 2019-20 All-Conference Boys Basketball teams.
David Bluder was named to the East Division’s Second Team, while Ben Cusick and Carson Shive received WaMaC Recognition, formerly Honorable Mention.

SHS presents “Freaky Friday” March 6-8

SOLON– When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. By spending a day in each other's shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another's struggles, learn self-acceptance and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter.
Solon High School’s Drama Department will present a musical version of “Freaky Friday” Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 7, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, March 8, at 2 p.m.

Respite Services

SOLON– Solon Retirement Village has always offered short term respite stays to help out caregivers who need a break, have to go out of town, health circumstances etc, but is excited to announce the availability now of daily respite services.
Melissa Reed, Campus Administrator states, "Respite services offers a win/win situation for everyone in the family not only the person who attends the program. It is perfect for caregivers who are still trying to work, manage their home and care for a family member."

School board considers earlier start for 2020-21 school year Input sought at March 19 meeting

SOLON– One day can make a difference.
The Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education voted to start the 2021-2022 school year for students on Monday, Aug. 23, 2021, and will consider making a similar change for the 2020-21 school year at a March 19 meeting.
The new calendar and the possible revision were discussed at a Feb. 20 meeting of the board.
Superintendent Davis Eidhal presented the proposed calendar, explaining the district had taken a different approach this year.

Lady Spartans continue receiving accolades

Holtkamp, Levin, LaDage and Holubar receive additional recognition

SOLON– It may be a few weeks divorced from the Lady Spartans’ exit from the postseason, but the recognition of the Lady Spartans’ performance continues.
The WaMaC Conference East Division released its selection of conference players and several Lady Spartans received recognition as part of their 2019-2020 campaign which ended with a 9-13 overall record, 5-7 in the WaMaC East.
Sophomore Kaia Holtkamp was selected for the 2019-2020 WaMaC East All-Conference Girls Basketball First Team.

Legion Friday night fish fries return Feb. 28 Raffle proceeds to help bring traveling Vietnam memorial

SOLON– This year, there will be plenty of fish.
In 2019, the Solon American Legion attracted the biggest crowds ever for its traditional Friday night fish fries.
Typically, over the course of seven Fridays heading into Easter, the Legion would draw an average of 230 people each evening.
“And last year we averaged over 350 per night,” explained Legion member Denny Hansen.
Last year, organizers decided to offer shrimp each week and moved the serving line out of the kitchen, he noted, and it made a big difference.
But they encountered an immediate problem– they hadn’t ordered enough food.

Stronger Together

Booster Club and school board to get control of fundraisers

SOLON– There are too many fundraisers.
So, the Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education has endorsed a proposal from the Solon Booster Club to bring all athletic fundraisers under one roof.
At a board meeting Feb. 20, Booster Club Treasurer Adam Stahle unveiled “Stronger Together,” a project aimed to strengthen the club’s sagging membership and address the district’s concern over the number of groups seeking funds on behalf of school programs.
