Long tenured administrator accepts Florida post

Lippincott leaving for warmer weather

SOLON– It’s been over eight years since Cassandra Lippincott first said hello to Solon.
Now it’s time to say goodbye.
Lippincott, the city’s third city administrator and its longest tenured, announced last week she has accepted a position with the city of Wildwood, Fla., and will be leaving in April.
Lippincott came to head up Solon’s city government in November 2005, following in the footsteps of the first city administrator, Brandy Forbes, and her successor, Tracey Mulcahey.
The city created the position in the spring of 2000.

County imposes weight and speed limits on Mehaffey Bridge

What’s shaking?

JOHNSON COUNTY– Cars should travel a little slower across Mehaffey Bridge now, and big trucks will have to detour around it until a new bridge is complete.
The Johnson County Secondary Roads department placed a weight embargo on the bridge and reduced the speed effective March 11, due to too much movement as cars were driving over the bridge that is currently under construction.

Marshek drainage still unresolved

SOLON– Having filed the annual budget with the county and state, the city council made a to-do list for 2014 and began working on it with a discussion of storm water drainage in the Marshek and Eastwood subdivision at its March 19 meeting.

Solon Spotlight spaghetti dinner April 3

SOLON– Mark your calendars for Thursday, April 3, for the annual Solon Spotlight spaghetti dinner. This will be held in the high school commons, immediately before the musical showcase concert. Spaghetti, salad, bread, drink and dessert will be available for $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. Serving times are 4:45 until 7 p.m. Diners will enjoy entertainment provided by the high school music students. Starting at 6:45 p.m. in the high school gym, there will be performances by the Winter Drumline and the Solon Middle School show choirs, followed by a progressive showcase of musical talent from fifth grade choirs and band continuing up to the high school choirs and band. Come enjoy an evening of good food and great music. All proceeds from the spaghetti dinner will benefit K-12 performing arts programs at Solon schools.

SHS drama department presents “Into the Woods” April 4-6

SOLON– Who knows what you will discover when you go “Into the Woods?” Stephen Sondheim’s musical comedy, to be presented by the Solon High School drama department, is a fractured fairy tale that combines the well-known characters of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood with the story of the Baker and his Wife who desperately want a child. Unfortunately, the Baker and his Wife have been cursed with childlessness by a wicked witch and must perform various missions involving the characters in the other fairy tales to break the spell.

5K the hard way

SOLON– Close to 70 hardy souls dragged themselves through culverts, over bales of hay and across ice-cold streams as the Solon Sluggers 13U baseball team hosted the second Solon Survivor Extreme 5K Saturday morning, March 8, southwest of Solon.
The off-road race raised funds for the club as well as the Solon Food Pantry.

Early season indoor meets for girls

MOUNT VERNON– Solon’s Lady Spartans head for the great outdoors in the coming week as track moves from indoors into a chilly start for the outdoor season.
Cornell College in Mount Vernon hosted the WaMaC East division meet March 22, with the WaMaC West participants coming in on their heels in the afternoon for theirs. No scores were kept, with spring break reducing team lineups and practice availability. The meet format, though, provided competition for teams that have faced extended winter weather as the season gets underway.

Spartans compete at WaMaC indoor meet

MOUNT VERNON– The 2014 edition of the Solon boys track team had its first chance to compete at the WaMaC indoor meet, held Saturday, March 22, at Cornell College in Mount Vernon. Team scores were not kept, allowing a variety of athletes to compete in various events.
Results for Solon included:
55 meter dash: Grant Goldsberry, 7.41; Dalton Hoit, 7.61.
200 meter dash: Grant Goldsberry, 25.91; Austin Kennedy, 26.54; Colton Hansel, 26.90; Jackson Walker, 28.93.
400 meter dash: Liam Bell, 1:04.14.
800 meter run: Patrick McGill, 2:20.46; Ben Backers, 2:34.62.

Jazz at the Commons March 30 at SHS

SOLON– Everyone is welcome to come enjoy the performances and have dinner with their families as Solon High School presents Jazz at the Commons Sunday, March 30, at the high school commons with performances by the high school jazz bands and choirs. Live Jazz begins at 5 p.m. All proceeds from food and other donations will support the Solon High School Jazz program.

Teams sought for PTO kickball tourney April 5

SOLON– A Kickin’ For Kids Kickball Tournament, sponsored by Solon Middle School PTO, will be held Saturday, April 5, at Lakeview playground and T-Ball Fields.
The cost is $175 per team, and all teams will have nine to 14 players. Option 1: half of the team must be SMS students and all teams must have at least two adults. Option 2: Competitive play (for older kids and businesses wanting to participate).

Solon Scrip raise money for the school district

SOLON– With the new Solon Scrip program, raising funds for the school district by selling magazine subscriptions and chocolate bars door-to-door might be on the way out for good.
Solon Scrip raises money for all three school PTOs through gift cards offered by both local and national vendors.

SCSD calendar committee frustrated with process

High school principal drops out of group’s leadership role

SOLON– The committee charged with making recommendations for the Solon district’s start and end of school year is frustrated with the process.
And high school principal Nathan Wear has accepted responsibility for the poor communication and stepped down as chair of the group.
Calendar committee members Brandi Radcliffe and Tom Altman appeared before the Solon school board at its March meeting to clarify the role of the committee during the events leading up to the approval of a 2014-2015 school calendar in February.
