Lady Spartans move to No. 2

SOLON– That was a close one.
Emily Ira helped her own cause, singling in Taylor Nearad and pinch-runner Grace McCarty in the fourth inning to give Solon a 2-0 win over No. 12 (4A) West Delaware at Manchester Monday evening.
Ira pitched seven scoreless innings for the win, striking out 14 batters and issuing only one walk while scattering five hits.
It was the 17th win of the season for the undefeated Lady Spartans, who moved up to second place in the Class 4A rankings issued June 13 by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Steve Duncan appointed to City Council

Council considers utility franchise for Alliant Energy

SOLON– The Solon City Council appointed Steve Duncan to fill the vacant council seat created when Steve Stange was appointed mayor.
“We’ve had a vacancy (on the council),” began Stange. “One of my goals was to try and find somebody that was kind of keeping up on what’s going on in the city, and has been active in our council meetings. I was looking for somebody that was in an area that is under development.”
“I approached Steve Duncan who ran for school board in the past,” said Stange.

Bond issue firm at 25.5 million

Language for Sept. 9 ballot on June 26 agenda

SOLON– The Solon school board is expected to finalize a Sept. 9 date for a $25.5 million bond issue referendum later this month.
According to Solon Superintendent Sam Miller, the district is planning a special board meeting Thursday, June 26, to accept a petition calling for a bond issue and to consider a resolution calling for a special election.
It’s a big step for the district, which has been discussing potential facility needs for months.

Scholarship process to be improved for Class of 2015

SOLON– Though school is out for summer and fall classes seem yet too distant to worry about, now is the right time to be thinking about college finances.
In addition to giving a first-year college scholarship to all Solon graduates who apply, Solon Dollars for Scholars awards Continuing Education Scholarships (CES) to Solon alumni in their second, third and fourth years of college. This summer, the volunteer organization has $32,000 in its CES coffers for those current college enrollees. The deadline for this year’s CES applications is June 15.

City to forgive late payments for May utility billing

SOLON– With the move into the new city hall, the City of Solon did not charge delinquent fees for April water/sewer bills that were due May 15. With some issues in doing the bills for May, the city will not be charging a delinquent fee if received after June 15. This will only be for this month’s water/sewer billing.

Lady Spartans on to state

Solon girls get rematch with No.3 Iowa City Regina Thursday in Des Moines

SOLON– Monday night, June 9, at the Spartan field, will be remembered for many years to come as the night the Solon girls’ soccer team made history.
The Lady Spartans took on the 10th-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck Rebels in a Class 1A Region 6 final, and won 1-0 to advance to the state tournament.
“I was so proud of the effort tonight. We have been working so hard on our game plan, both offensively and defensively,” said head coach John Tucker. “We controlled the ball really well and were able to get some good looks on the goal.”

Offense + defense equals 11-0 start

Emily Ira strikes out 29 in two games as Lady Spartans roll

SOLON– When the offense is sputtering, put Emily Ira on the mound.
Twice in the last week, Coach Jim White’s Lady Spartan softball team was able to preserve an undefeated season by riding strike-out happy Ira’s pitching arm.
Ira struck out 16 batters in a 1-0 victory over Benton Community (No. 4 in Class 3A), and 13 against Highland in a 4-0 win over the weekend.
But in fairness to the rest of the Solon pitching staff and the team’s defense, no one scored an earned run against the Lady Spartans last week.

Solon Vietnam vet receives Purple Heart 45 years later

RURAL SOLON– On April 22, 1969, Ronald “Steve” Durr was standing in the back of an Air Force C-123 cargo plane as it was departing a Special Forces camp deep in the jungles of Vietnam. It was a mission the staff sergeant and his crew had flown many times as they brought in vital supplies to the Green Berets, landing just long enough for Durr, the crew’s loadmaster, to send the cargo down the plane’s loading ramp as it took off again. The area was known to be a hotbed of enemy activity, and on this day the Viet Cong made their presence known.
