Financial aid and scholarship night Feb. 23 at CCA

TIFFIN– On Thursday, Feb. 23, starting at 6:30 p.m., Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School will host its annual Financial Aid and Scholarship Night.
Why is this event held now? The federal government has ruled that you may file your application for federal aid starting in October of your child’s senior year. Therefore, district staff wants CCA parents and students to have every opportunity to apply in time to get their college financial aid in a timely manner.

North Liberty Leader’s Chris Umscheid takes a first in Iowa’s outstanding newspapers honors

DES MOINES– The 2017 Iowa Better Newspaper Contests announced, on Feb. 3, The North Liberty Leader’s Chris Umscheid took first place in the Best Sports Feature Photo division.
The Des Moines Register was named as the Iowa Newspaper Association 2017 “Newspaper of the Year.”
The awards were announced at the association’s Awards Banquet, Feb. 3, during the INA 2017 Convention held at the Des Moines Marriott Hotel.
Umscheid won first place in the Best Sports Feature Photo competition for Weekly Class 1 newspapers.

City mulls impact of TIF rebate for Main Street project

HPR applies for $350,00 to help build “121 on Main”

SOLON– They didn’t say yes, but they didn’t say no.
At a regular meeting Feb. 1, members of the Solon City Council directed City Administrator Cami Rasmussen to project the impact of between $125,000 and $200,000 in Tax Increment Finance (TIF) rebates over the span of five budget years for a proposed Main Street development.
The move was in response to a TIF application by HPR Investments LLC seeking $350,000, or 10 percent of the $3.5 million project cost, in assistance for “121 on Main,” a mixed-use two-story building slated to replace three Main Street residences.

The Solon Spartan Archery team hosted its second annual tournament Saturday, Jan. 7, in the Solon High School gymnasium, finishing a strong second place and missing first place by only 12 points. Several individual archers were awarded medals in different divisions.

Chuck Deisbeck makes move from Western Iowa to become CEO

NORTH LIBERTY– Chuck Deisbeck was called to the telecommunications industry at a young age– when he was just 8 years old to be exact.
Beginning in third grade, he spent many an afternoon rebuilding phones and installing jacks alongside his older brother for a business his father managed.
“We were kind of his hired hands but didn’t get paid,” said Deisbeck, with a laugh. “By eighth grade, I was climbing poles, and running boring machines and backhoes.”

Boot Camp: SESSION 3 OF BOOT CAMP:

Classes begin Feb. 20 on Monday evenings from 6-7 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 10:15-11:15 a.m. Classes will be held in the basement of the St. Mary Church Parish Hall and include a variety of exercises, including resistance training and body weight exercises. This 10-class strengthening session is again being instructed by Renee Manders. More information and the registration forms are on the Solon Parks and Recreation website. Registration forms, as well as punch cards, are also available at Solon City Hall.

Group gives mutual support, reaches out to community

NORTH LIBERTY– “It was the Dallas mass shooting when the officers were attacked this past summer,” recalled Darci Roehler, wife of a Coralville police officer. “Four or five of us were on Facebook that night, messaging each other back and forth.”
“Unable to sleep, worried,” added Jennifer Downes, a fellow police wife and co-founder of the Blue Hearts of Johnson County. “We were just kind of seeking each other out because we understood…. We were friends, some of us for 15 years. We just kind of found solace in each other that night.”
Roehler said they were all glued to the TV.

Local Boy Scout earns Eagle rank with project at Penn Meadows

NORTH LIBERTY– Trevor Schense of North Liberty joined Cub Scouts when he was in the first grade. A friend asked him to join and later the friend moved to Cedar Rapids, but by that time Schense was hooked on Scouting and stayed a member of the pack.
As a Cub Scout he enjoyed the many activities such as his first campout, day camp, knot tying, crafts, cake auctions, pine wood derby, rain gutter regatta and many other activities.

NORTH LIBERTY– Construction continues on the new Liberty High School in North Liberty, and Principal Scott Kibby was pleased to report the building, set to open for the 2017-2018 school year, is on schedule. Kibby recently sat for an interview highlighting the school’s progress, not only in construction but also in staffing.

Garner Elementary Waffle Breakfast Saturday, Feb. 11

NORTH LIBERTY– Garner Elementary will host a Waffle Breakfast with Class Basket Auction and Raffle on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 7:30-10:30 a.m. at the school.

Sprout Kids Academy open house Feb. 12

TIFFIN– Sprout Kids Academy, a childcare and preschool center, will have an open house Sunday, Feb. 12, from 12-4 p.m. at its facility located at 400 Elderberry St. in Tiffin.
Staff will be available to give tours of the facility and meet parents, and snacks and games will be provided for the kids.
Sprout Kids Academy offers childcare and preschool, including before and after school programming, for children ages six weeks to 12 years. The center will partner with the Clear Creek Amana school district for the 2017-2018 school year to offer preschool.

Blood drive, bingo at North Bend Feb. 17

NORTH LIBERTY– North Bend Elementary (NBE) in North Liberty will host a special night of activities Friday, Feb. 17.
A blood drive with the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center will be held from 2:30-6:30 p.m. in the teacher workroom with walk-ins welcome. There will also be a fun Rock and Roll Bingo night which will run from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria, so plan to stop in and donate the gift of life and stay to play some rockin’ bingo afterwards.
