Proposed utilities rate increases to take effect July 1

The North Liberty City Council will likely vote to implement a five-percent increase to water and sewer rates at its June 28 meeting.

What do I pay now?
Dependent on your household size, you could be spending anywhere from $25-$100 per month on water alone. The current base rate (first 1,000 gallons) for water is $14.12 and $27.24 for sewer. The proposed increase is $14.83 for water and $28.60 for sewer.

Is five percent a lot?
Yearly increases to utilities rates are not uncommon. Last year, there was a similar increase to water rates and a seven percent increase to sewer rates. Rates are expected to level off starting in FY18.

New vehicle maintenance facility for CCA sparks discussion, ends with a walk out

OXFORD– With a tight budget to work with, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District administration and school board directors have explored a variety of ways to save scarce dollars.
The most recent cost-saving opportunity has arisen due to a change in where and how the district maintains its vehicle fleet, sparking some controversy during discussion at the board’s June 15 meeting at the Clear Creek Elementary School in Oxford.

6th Annual Red White and Bluegrass Festival July 3

NORTH LIBERTY– Located right here in the corridor, the Red, White and Bluegrass Festival has been bringing you Bluegrass for six great years now. The festival hosts great local and Midwest bluegrass and jam grass bands.
The Festival is run by the American Legion Post 1976, and is staffed by veterans and friends of veterans volunteers. This is only one of two fundraisers your local veterans do each year. Thanks for your support in the past and future; it means a ton to the North Liberty American Legion, its veterans and the charities it supports.

NL pantry 4th Annual Turkey Trot July 9

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry will hold the Fourth Annual Thanksgiving in July Turkey Trot 10k/5k Races and Family 1 Mile Event on Saturday, July 9, at 8 a.m. All proceeds will go to the pantry as part of the community-wide Thanksgiving in July (TGIJ) efforts.

Big Grove, Newport and Cedar townships, Solon sign service agency charter

Fire station and equipment to be deeded over

SOLON– On the surface, it will appear as if the Solon volunteer fire department is operating as usual.
Behind the scenes, however, there will have been some major changes.
At the conclusion of a special city council meeting June 6, representatives of the City of Solon and of Big Grove, Newport and Cedar townships signed a charter agreement to create a new fire service agency.
The Solon Tri-Township Emergency Response Agency will in turn establish, by resolution, the Solon Tri-Township Fire Department and oversee its operation beginning July 1.

Solon Optimist Club Summer Bike Rodeo

Saturday, June 18

SOLON– The Optimist Club of Solon will host its annual Summer Bike Rodeo on Saturday, June 18, on the play area behind the Solon Middle School. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the contest will begin at 9 a.m. Kids in five age brackets (4-5, 6-7, 8-9 and 10-11 and training wheels) will compete in five contests focusing on balance, steering and paper toss. There will be a boy and girl division for each age bracket. Each age bracket will have first, second and third place trophies and two overall championship trophies. Come practice your bicycle skill and be sure to wear your helmet.

July 4 Ely Firefighter’s Breakfast

ELY– The Annual Ely Volunteer Fire Department Firefighter’s Breakfast is Monday, July 4. Proceeds from this yearly event support the department’s operational expenses. Tickets can be purchased from any Ely firefighter or local merchants. Adult tickets are $6 in advance, $6.50 at the door, $3 for children 12 and under, and children 5 and under eat free. All-you-can-eat pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, milk, coffee and water will be served. Serving, rain or shine, from 6:30 a.m. to noon at the Ely Fire Department, 1300 Main St. in Ely.

Friese nudges out Heiden for third spot in Nov. election

Incumbents maintain place on supervisors’ ballot

IOWA CITY– And then there were three.
Incumbents Rod Sullivan and Lisa Green-Douglass, along with newcomer Kurt Friese, survived the Democratic primary election for the position of Johnson County Supervisor June 7.
Sullivan came away the big winner, pulling 62 percent of the vote countywide, while Green-Douglass (53 percent) and Friese (49 percent) polled just ahead of Patricia Heiden (45 percent).
Jason T. Lewis (27 percent) and Mike Hull (14 percent) were a distant fifth and sixth place.

DNR proposes alcohol ban at Lake Macbride

Public hearing July 26 at Palisades-Kepler State Park

SOLON– If a proposed rule change goes into effect, alcohol will no longer be allowed at the Lake Macbride State Park beach.
But the process for approval is such that it may be October 2017 before the recommended changes take effect.
At a meeting Thursday, June 9, members of the Iowa Natural Resources Commission voted to approve a notice of intended action to amend the administrative rules governing state parks.

Outdoor Movie Night at Randall Park

Thursday, June 23

SOLON– Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket and join the Solon United Methodist Church at Randall Park the evening on June 23, for a showing of “*batteries not included.” The 1987 Steven Spielberg film stars Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy as owners and residents of a run-down apartment building and café in New York City’s East Village. They are befriended by extraterrestrial “flying saucers” who breathe new life into the struggle of the tenants in the building to save it from demolition. Film critic Roger Ebert described this movie as “sweet, cheerful, fun family entertainment.”
