Bundled up for egg hunting

It was mostly sunny, but cold and windy as the Optimist Club of Solon held its annual Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, March 31, at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Over 100 area kids ran into the stiff breeze to take advantage of the hunt, as well as complimentary bubbles and kites.

Winter Drumline performing at Percussion Festival, April 7

MARION– The Solon High School Winter Drumline will be performing at the Marion Percussion Festival, hosted by Marion High School Music Department in conjunction with the Iowa Music & Arts Association Saturday, April 7, at Marion High School.
The festival doors open at 1:30 p.m. It begins with several hands-on clinics presented by experts in the areas of marching and concert percussion including Eric Thompson, Tym Healey, Dave Leatherman, and Joe Perea. In addition, area schools have the opportunity to receive a clinic for their drumline or percussion section.

Emanuel Ax with Orchestra Iowa at Solon Center of the Arts April 15

SOLON– Sunday, April 15 will be an evening you don’t want to miss. At 7:30 p.m., multi Grammy winning pianist, Emanuel Ax will be performing works from Brahms with Orchestra Iowa at Solon Center of the Arts. Mr. Ax has performed all around the U.S., Europe and even Carnegie Hall. He’s received Grammy awards for his personal work and with Yo-Yo Ma, a world renowned cellist. Tickets for this event can be purchased through Orchestra Iowa. This is sure to be a wonderful night filled with beautiful music.

Tiffin fire annual pancake breakfast April 15

TIFFIN– The Tiffin Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders host their annual pancake breakfast Sunday, April 15, from 6 a.m. to noon at the fire station, 221 Main St.
Chief Brian Detert said the department expects to serve around 1,200 people. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, whole hog sausage and cinnamon rolls. There will also be jam from Clear Creek Orchard for sale. No admission fee is required, but a free will donation is accepted.

kicks off 4th growing season

NORTH LIBERTY– Growing Together Garden, North Liberty Community Pantry’s 9,600-square-foot educational garden, invites the community to the annual Planting Party on Thursday, April 26, from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Individuals and families are welcome to stop by Growing Together Garden, 89 N Jones Blvd in North Liberty, anytime during the event to learn basic planting skills, put seeds in the ground, or simply tour the garden space. Snacks and gardening equipment will be provided. All ages welcome and no gardening experience required, in fact, beginning gardeners are encouraged to attend.

Give & Grow benefits area school foundations

NORTH LIBERTY– University of Iowa Community Credit Union will support area schools with a matching program for credit union members. During the month of April, UICCU members are invited to donate (up to $500 per household) to school foundations in markets where UICCU has a branch location. UICCU will match the donation to a maximum based on school enrollment figures.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for our members to partner with the credit union to ultimately invest in children, the future of our communities,” said Jeff Disterhoft, UICCU President/CEO.

Van Allen inaugural International Night

NORTH LIBERTY– It was a frenzied scene as families scampered about, tasting regional foods and exploring new art, language and clothing through the many displays of cultural celebration.
But this was no Epcot theme park.
James Van Allen Elementary held its first International Night on Thursday, March 29. The evening provided a showcase of national heritage, allowing the young student population to demonstrate its diversity and fellow students to familiarize themselves with cultures other than their own.

Dance for a Difference

NORTH LIBERTY– Students of Liberty High are wasting little time establishing their new school as a vessel of support for local families struggling with pediatric illness. To finish its first year, the school is preparing for its inaugural Dance for a Difference fundraiser. The event will take place Sunday, April 22, from 12-4 p.m.

CCA Community Clean-up Day Friday, April 27

TIFFIN– The annual Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School Community Clean-up Day will be held on Friday, April 27. CCA High School students from the Student Assistance Team/Interact along with National Honor Society will volunteer their day to help our older community members with yard work, windows, small household chores and general spring cleaning.

Spring Cleanup Day April 28

NORTH LIBERTY– Spring Cleanup Day, for disposal of large items, brush, tires, batteries and other waste, is scheduled for April 28 from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Public Works Facility, 620 Calvin St.
The cost for this service is included in monthly city utility bills and is for residents of North Liberty only (please be prepared with a water bill stub or driver’s license). Tiffin Listening Post April 7

TIFFIN– On Saturday, April 7, Senator Kevin Kinney and Representative Amy Nielsen will host a Legislative Listening Post in Tiffin. The Listening Post will be held at Clear Creek Amana High School in the Commons and starts at 8 a.m., doors open at 7:30 a.m. The post will last for approximately one hour in length. Everyone is encouraged to attend to voice concerns, ask questions regarding legislation and share input on the legislative session.

Muddy Creek cleanup April 7

NORTH LIBERTY– On Saturday, April 7, residents are encouraged to join the cleanup led by the North Liberty Tree & Storm Water Advisory Board, Boy Scout Troop 216 and Cub Scout Packs 216 and 275 to remove debris along Big Muddy Creek and the bike trail. The clean up is held annually in observance of Keep America Beautiful Day.
