CCA edges Anamosa, 6-4

TIFFIN– Cappy’s Crew won their first WaMaC conference game of the season Friday, May 27, at home, against the Blue Raiders of Anamosa, by a score of 6-4 in the first half of a varsity doubleheader. The second half was postponed due to lightning, heavy rain and even reports of a few funnel clouds throughout southern Johnson County.
The Clippers scored one run in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 lead when Cody Ogden came home on a Jake Neubauer single to right field. The Raiders retaliated with one run each in the third, fourth and fifth innings, to go up 3-1.

And they’re off!

Zach Wigle to succeed Keith McSweeney in 2016-17 school year

SOLON– The School Administrators of Iowa (SAI) Secondary Principal of the Year will be Solon’s new activities director (AD).
Solon Community School District (SCSD) Superintendent Dr. Davis Eidahl announced May 13 that Zach Wigle will succeed Keith McSweeney and become the school’s first full-time AD, pending school board approval.
Wigle (pronounced WHY-gull) is currently the principal for Keokuk High School, and was in Des Moines on the day of the announcement to be recognized by the SAI as principal of the year.

Solon car thefts prompt reminder to lock vehicles

SOLON– The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents of Solon to lock their vehicles at night after a series of overnight thefts May 12-13 on the south side of town.
According to Sgt. Kevin Elliott, four unlocked vehicles in the Wood Lily Road/Willow Lane/Bergamot Lane area, on Solon’s south side, were targeted between 10 p.m. Thursday, May 12, and 5:45 a.m. Friday, May 13. Items were removed from three of the four vehicles.

Solon Poppy Days May 21-May 30

SOLON– Memorial poppies, made by hospitalized and disabled veterans, will be available in various businesses in Solon from May 21 through Memorial Day.
The red poppy has been the symbol for honoring and remembering the men and women who served and died in services to our country since 1921.
The poppy was immortalized by Canadian Colonel John McCrae in his poem “In Flanders Fields” after WWI and also is used in Canada, Great Britain and other countries to honor the war dead.

Teaching a love of language

 SOLON– Most of Solon knows Lori Lindner as a reporter and photographer for the Solon Economist and North Liberty Leader newspapers. For the past 10 years, Lindner helped record the towns’ news and photographed its events.
But these days, she’s writing more lesson plans than news stories. This spring, she transitioned into a new role in Solon: the youth services librarian for the Solon Public Library.

SOLON– The Solon volunteer firefighters would like to invite the public to their annual breakfast.
The firefighters will be serving breakfast at the fire station Sunday, May 29, from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Adult admission is $6 and children are $4. The breakfast includes pancakes, sausage, fried and scrambled eggs, milk and coffee. This is one of two annual fundraisers for the firefighters’ association.

Ely Road paving project scheduled to start June 13

ELY– A concrete overlay project will begin Monday, June 13, or later, on Ely Road between Johnson County and the City of Cedar Rapids.
The project consists of an 8-foot concrete overlay, from Johnson County north to Cedar Rapids, excluding through the City of Ely.

City hires from within to fill retirement vacancy

Dave Richards to replace Jerry McAtee

SOLON– The city didn’t have to look far for a replacement.
The Solon City Council approved the promotion of current public works employee Dave Richards to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Utility Specialist Jerry McAtee at a meeting May 18.
In his new position, Richards will be responsible for the operation of the city’s water and wastewater facilities.
Richards was selected from a pool of candidates by a committee consisting of council members Mark Krall and Mark Prentice, Public Works Director Scott Kleppe and City Administrator Cami Rasmussen.

Keela and the Boys to open Music on Main June 1

SOLON– Keela and the Boys have always loved playing on Main Street for Solon Idol. Although it hasn’t always been as a group, they have been playing with Music on Main for many years. The group was started by John Radenbaugh and Cash Turner when they were in seventh grade. The group got its name when Keela joined in 2012. Keela and the Boys is made up of Radenbaugh, Turner, Adam Roy, Uhlenkamp, Sarah Roy, Edward Richey and Hunter Thompson.
