NL City council approves FY18 budget and $10.5 million CIP

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty is growing. And, more people means more money needed for services such as public safety, recreation and public works.
How much more? About $13.5 million in the last five years.
At a Feb. 28 meeting, the North Liberty City Council approved the city’s fiscal year 2018 budget of $47,978,285– up from $34,541,042 in FY13.

Spring Cleanup Day Saturday, April 29

NORTH LIBERTY– Spring Cleanup Day on Saturday, April 29, from 7-11:30 a.m. is for residents of North Liberty only. Please be prepared to verify that you are a North Liberty resident with a water bill stub or driver’s license. North Liberty residents pay 30¢ each month on their recycling bill for this service.
Miscellaneous large items are to be brought to the Public Works Facility, 620 Calvin St.
Assistance will be provided to the elderly or handicapped. Please call City Hall (319-626-5700) by April 27 to make arrangements.

Manic Drive concert at Grace Community Church Friday, April 21

Library fundraiser and 2K walk April 23

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s all about the bump. The North Liberty Community Library invites community members to participate in its first Waddle Walk on Sunday, April 23, at 1 p.m., starting at the library and continuing along the trail around Liberty Centre Pond.
This 2K walk is a fundraiser to support the library’s Read to the Bump program, which helps build a baby’s personal library before birth by purchasing board books to give to expecting families. The program is currently offered at the North Liberty Community Pantry.

Quail Creek tournament April 23

NORTH LIBERTY– Quail Creek Golf Course is hosting its first ever Big Cup Tournament to be held in the spring. The 18-hole, four-person best shot with 8-inch cups tournament is Sunday, April 23, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 700 Club House Rd.
The cost is $55 per player ($35 for members) or $220 for a foursome and includes a cart, fees, tournament entry and entry into pin events. Space is limited and only paid entrants will be guaranteed carts. Call the clubhouse at 319-626-2281 to reserve your spot.

Annual golf tournament May 5 to benefit pantry

NORTH LIBERTY– Dust off the clubs and join the North Liberty Community Pantry for its 7th Annual 4-Person Best Shot Golf Tournament on Friday, May 5, at Brown Deer Golf Club, 1900 Country Club Dr. in Coralville.
Check-in is 7:30-8:30 a.m., with a tee time of 9 a.m. Team registration is $450 and includes continental breakfast, green fees, carts, catered lunch, driving range balls and team pictures for each player. During the tournament there will be a silent auction. Awards and lunch will be served immediately following the tournament.

Lakeview PTO hosts 6th Annual Spartan Dash Saturday, April 29

SOLON– The Lakeview Elementary PTO will host its 6th Annual Spartan Dash on Saturday, April 29 (rain or shine). The Spartan Dash is a fun and crazy fitness event that serves as the Lakeview PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year.
Interested individuals should sign up to participate in the event with a “family team.”
Family teams will walk, skip or run through obstacles set up along the 1-mile trail in the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA). Obstacles will be suitable for both children and adults and are guaranteed to have you laughing.

Council members reconsider tie-in to Coralville routes

NORTH LIBERTY– After six months of service, the success of the new North Liberty Transit program seems to be uncertain.
The intracity bus service, running for three midday hours during the week, has seen a total of 159 rides since its grand opening last October– costing the city an average $146.34 per trip and $48.47 per hour.
“I’ve been saying for a long time that we can’t afford to do what needs to be done,” said council member Jim Sayre during the March 28 meeting when the data was discussed. “We’re just nibbling away at stuff.”

Sixth title for 5th Street Jazz

5th Street Jazz wins its in Class 3A competition at the 2017 Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships

SOLON– Solon High School’s 5th Street Jazz vocal ensemble participated in the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships nine times and won the Class 3A title five times, but the group was not invited to participate in 2016.
It made this year’s competition special for Solon seniors.
“My sophomore year, I was in Blame It On Our Youth, and we got third at championships, so it was very hard last year, being in 5th Street and not qualifying,” Solon senior Elizabeth Hand said.

Snipes reappointed to fill council vacancy

SOLON– For the second time, Dale Snipes has been appointed to the Solon City Council.
Snipes was originally selected in February of 2015 to replace former council member Ron Herdliska, and in a twist, Herdliska was tabbed to fill Snipes’ seat when he stepped down, in July of 2016, due a change in his employment.
This time, Snipes replaces longtime city councilor Mark Krall, who vacated his seat in March and will fill a term set to expire at the end of the year.
The decision was made at an April 5 city council meeting.

Optimist Club annual Easter Egg Hunt set for Saturday, April 15

SOLON– The Optimist Club of Solon hosts its Annual Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, April 15, at 1:30 p.m. at the east end of the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. The event is for children of all ages.

May Day Breakfast May 6

SOLON– Highlight May 6 on the calendar to remember to attend the GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club May Day Breakfast at the Solon Methodist Church from 7 to 11 a.m. Egg and meat casseroles, homemade kolaches and rolls, fruit, orange juice, coffee and milk will be served.
The cost is $6 per adult and $3 for children (ages 5-12) tickets are available from GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club members or at the door on May 7. Bring family and friends and receive a special deal, five adult tickets for $25 and/or five children tickets for $12.
