Car crash ends chase in Solon

SOLON– A vehicle matching the description of one involved in a Cedar Rapids shooting incident took law enforcement authorities on a chase that ended with a crash in Solon.
According to the Linn County Sheriff’s Department, charges have been filed against five individuals, including one juvenile.

Solon Senior Advocates plan August senior trips with new minibus

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates has announced several opportunities for short senior trips in August utilizing the organization’s new minibus.
Thursday, Aug. 7: Lisbon Sauerkraut Days in the Park; ice cream, baked goods, music and fireworks, 6:30 p.m. Cost is $5.
Friday, Aug. 15: Bluff Lake Catfish Farm, Maquoketa; all-you-can-eat whole and filleted catfish. Leave Solon at 2 p.m. Cost is $7.50.
Sunday, Aug. 17: Ely Polka Fest, Ely American Legion; 10 a.m. Polka service with St. John Lutheran Church, food, drink and dance to follow. Barefoot Becky playing. Cost is $5.

Babygarten helps to nurture the bond between caregiver and child, increase eye-hand coordination, and develop body awareness. This rhythmic program will enrich your child’s life from the very beginning and provide an excellent foundation for the future. Each session will feature music, board books, and toys and is intended for children ages birth to 24 months.

Solon Robotics Open House Aug. 7

SOLON– Solon Robotics will host an open house on Thursday, Aug. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Industrial Tech building (former wood shop) located behind the Solon Middle School Auditorium.
Solon Robotics is an after-school program open to middle and high school students in the Solon Community School District. Student teams design, build, program, and compete with robots in challenges that are new each season. Pick up middle school football equipment Aug. 12-13

SOLON–Equipment handout for Solon seventh and eighth graders planning on playing football this fall will be as follows:
Eighth grade on Tuesday, Aug. 12, beginning at 4 p.m., and seventh grade on Wednesday, Aug. 13, beginning at 4 p.m. This will take place at the middle school. Athletes please make sure that you have an updated physical on file in order to participate.

NL council chooses Moore

City will still be required to fill post by election in November

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council has chosen Dave Moore to fill its vacant seat.
There were five applicants for the position of councilperson, a vacancy created June 24 when councilor Gerry Kuhl was appointed to the late Tom Salm’s mayoral post. The remaining four members voted unanimously to appoint someone to the empty council seat.

Board announces listening posts for redistricting

IOWA CITY– Technical difficulties prevented Iowa City School District (ICCSD) School Board President Chris Lynch and Superintendent Steve Murley from direct participation via telephone during their Tuesday, July 22, business meeting.
Orville Townsend Sr., appointed unanimously to the board during a special meeting July 21, was sworn in and seated to attend his first meeting since his previous service on the board in the 1980s.

CCA solidifies sidewalk agreement with City of Tiffin

OXFORD– An agreement between the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district and the City of Tiffin for the construction of a sidewalk-trail was signed by the school board Wednesday, July 23, during its regular meeting at Clear Creek Elementary in Oxford. The agreement stipulates that the district will build an eight-foot sidewalk from the west edge of its property (by the northwest corner of the high school) to Ireland Avenue, with the city reimbursing the district for three feet of the width.

LOST issue requires three cities to hold special elections Nov. 4

IOWA CITY– Three Johnson County cities– North Liberty, Oxford and Solon– will have special elections for city offices on the Nov. 4 general election ballot.

Iowa law says that city council appointments last until the next scheduled city election. Because the local option sales tax (LOST) referendum will appear on the general election ballot, the general election is now considered the next scheduled city election.
The Johnson County Attorney and the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office concur in this opinion, according to the Johnson County Auditor’s office.

Paws to read and laugh out loud

TIFFIN– Where can you find sassy puppets, magic tricks, jumping snakes and a trained flea circus?
Children fround them all at Springmier Library in Tiffin on July 9, when puppeteer and performer Maggie Erdmann presented Paws to Read, a fun presentation that uses puppets, magic and audience participation to encourage kids to find their favorite books in their local libraries. Council says no to 16k for courthouse

Hearing set to consider borrowing for $727,000 fire station addition

SOLON– The Solon City Council did not support language in a ballot initiative that would dedicate 10 percent of potential Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) revenue toward payment of a bond for the county courthouse annex.
Council members did schedule a public hearing on securing Tax Increment Financing (TIF) for an addition to the fire station.
The city has a number of major infrastructure projects still on its to-do list, including the North Trunk sewer line, a water tower, and other municipal projects, and is currently carrying substantial debt to retire.

SOLON– Solon Youth Volleyball Camps are approaching. Registration forms are available online in the Virtual Backpack and can be turned in at camp with payment, but please email Coach Gustin with the player’s name, grade, and T-shirt size (youth or adult) at pgustin@solon.k12.ia.us, as soon as possible.
Grades three, four and five camp: Aug. 4 and 5, 10 a.m. until noon.
Grades six, seven and eight camp: Aug. 4-5, 12:30 until 2:30 p.m.
