An Olympic bobsledder tells her story in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Feb. 8, 2002, in Salt Lake City. The opening ceremony for the XIX Olympic Winter Games had commenced to an enthusiastic crowd in the Rice-Eccles Stadium. And for the first time since 1932, the highest global institution in all of athletics was about to host two-woman bobsledding. Amidst all the pomp and festivities was a Midwestern girl named Jean, who helped pave the way for what was about to happen.

Legion Kettle-Fried Chicken, Feb. 3

SOLON– The Solon Sons of the American Legion will host their annual “Famous” Kettle-Fried Chicken Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Solon Legion. The menu includes all-you-can-eat, delicious kettle-fried chicken, cheesy potatoes, oven-baked beans, bread, dessert and drinks. The meal will be served from 5-7:30 p.m., with take-out available. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-12 and children under 6 eat free. Proceeds benefit Solon community and veterans projects.

Swisher Legion Chili Cook-Off Feb. 4

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion will host its annual Chili Cook-Off Sunday, Feb. 4, at the Legion. Bring one crock pot of your best chili to the Legion by 2 p.m. to be considered for first, second and third place prizes. One entry per person. The entry fee is $5.
After judging is complete, the public is welcome to an all-you-can-eat chili supper for $5. Cook-off contestants receive free admittance to the chili supper with their entry fee. For more information regarding the Swisher American Legion Chili Cook-Off, call 319-560-6111.

Parking and refreshments for Beat the Bitter at Hope Evangelical

NORTH LIBERTY– Hope Evangelical, in North Liberty, will again offer both parking and refreshments to those planning to attend the Beat the Bitter Fire and Ice event on Feb. 2.
Hope Evangelical Church, 420 N. Front St., offers any space available in its lot as convenient parking when making way to the nearby Penn Meadows Park for the scheduled events. Feel free to set up chairs on the property to watch the fireworks show. Free hot cider and cookies will be available for those who park, from 5:30- 7:30 p.m.

Troop 216 chili supper Feb. 3

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Boy Scout Troop 216 will host its 38th annual Chili Supper from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the North Liberty Community Center.
Tickets are $5. Children 5 and under are admitted free. The dinner includes all-you-can-eat meat or vegetarian chili, bread, drinks and a variety of homemade desserts, including traditional Scout cobbler.
The dinner is the troop’s primary annual fundraising event. Proceeds help cover the cost of high adventure trips, summer camp and other activities for the troop’s approximately 30 Scouts.

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District continues to see an annual increase in the number of students enrolled in its classrooms, which has led to bond issues and new buildings. With many districts across the state losing students, it’s a good problem to have, three consecutive superintendents have said.

Casey Hack of Midland to succeed Zach Wigle

SOLON– The Solon Community School Board acted Friday, Jan. 26, to hire Casey Hack as Solon’s new Activities Director.
Responsibilities of an activities director include administrative duties, as well as implementing and supervising student programs.
Hack’s contract begins July 1, when he will replace Zach Wigle. Wigle will transition to principal for the new Solon Intermediate School.

KCs breakfast Feb. 4

SOLON– The Solon Knights of Columbus (KCs) will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast on Sunday, Feb. 4, from 8 a.m. until noon at St. Mary Catholic Church Parish Hall. The cost is $6 for ages 12 and older, $3 for ages 6 through 11 and free for ages five and younger. Eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage and pancakes will be served.

Lake Macbride State Park activities update Feb. 28

SOLON– Iowa State Parks have begun a new tradition of hosting annual informational meetings to update the public on park activities. Lake Macbride State Park will be hosting its annual meeting Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. at the Solon Public Library meeting room. Topics will include visitation, trends in Iowa State Parks, recent projects and volunteer efforts/coordination.

The cities of North Liberty, Solon and Ely found a way to capitalize on Iowa’s traditionally cold winters and are offering free outdoor ice skating in designated areas.
Ever since Mike Reeves, the Solon Parks and Recreation activities director, can remember, that’s the way it’s been in Solon.

Women’s Club applications due Feb. 1

SOLON– The GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club sponsors scholarships and music campships with a Feb. 1 deadline each year.
Scholarship packets are available at the Solon Middle and High School guidance counselor’s office or through the music instructors. These scholarships are sponsored by the GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club.
