New design for Johncy’s

NORTH LIBERTY– Renovations are underway at the North Liberty neighborhood Johncy’s Liquor Store. Johncy Menezes and his wife Michelle Menezes purchased the store and decided to give it a new look. The store will stay open during normal hours. Most of the work will be completed during off hours.
Johncy’s will expand on the hard-to-find liquors and on micro brews and wines. They are in the process of upgrading the beer coolers, removing all the coolers and adding a huge walk-in cooler, just for microbrews and Iowa beers, and add a separate beer cave for all other craft beers.

Bill Riley Talent Search comes to Tiffin

Qualifying show on Saturday, March 3

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Fine Arts and Music Enhancers (FAME) will be hosting a Bill Riley State Fair Talent Search qualifying show on Saturday, March 3, at the CCA High School Performing Arts Center. There will be 15 available slots in each of the two divisions. Performers will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until all spots have been filled.

Solon Drama to present “Little Women”

SOLON– The Solon High School Drama Department presents “Little Women” on March 2-4. Tickets for shows go on sale on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m. online through MidwestTix. Visit MidwestTix at https://midwestix.securemytix.com/events/26063.
In-person ticket sales begin on Feb. 17 in the high school auditorium lobby from 10-11:30 a.m.
Tickets are the same price through both venues, $11.50, $14.50 or $17.50, service fees are included in these prices.

Retirement Village to add palliative care

Groundbreaking expected in March for new wing

SOLON– Solon Retirement Village has been approved to add a palliative care unit onto its evolving campus, expecting to break ground in March. 
Melissa Reed, who has served as Administrator for nine years at the Solon Retirement Village unit of Solon Nursing Care, said for now, it is being referred to as the Solon Retirement Village Palliative Care Unit, “But we hope to have a more formal name as we get into the process.”
The project was approved in October by the State Certificate of Need board.
Palliative units are similar though distinct from hospice houses, Reed explained.

Splash pad committee seeking county, state funds

SOLON– Solon’s splash pad committee is still not close to its goal of raising approximately $400,000.
But it’s much closer than it was two years ago.
Melissa Tiedemann, chair of the splash pad committee, told council members at a Dec. 20 meeting about $80,000 has been collected for the project.
The committee had $5,000 in March of 2016.
Tiedemann joined the committee after receiving an initial mailer from Solon Activities Director Mike Reeve and has spent the last year as chair of the committee.

Alzheimer’s awareness program at St. Mary

SOLON– Solon High School students will present an Alzheimer’s awareness presentation at 11:30 a.m., after Mass on Sunday, March 18, at St. Mary Catholic Church. The event is hosted by Colin Horning and Carl Richey, along with his mother Angela Steinbrech, grandmother Narg Steinbrech, and grandfather Ed Steinbrech, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s five years ago. The presentation itself will provide a basic rundown of the different forms and stages of dementia, how to care for loved ones or friends, and how it affects not only the patient but those around them.

Eastern Iowa Orchid Society receives Silver Certificate

NORTH LIBERTY– The Eastern Iowa Orchid Society received a prestigious Silver Certificate at the Winter Carnival Orchid Show held in St. Paul, Minn., on Jan. 27. In addition, the organization was awarded the Show Trophy for the best exhibit in the entire show.
The American Orchid Society judges scored the display for a national award and, with 85 points, was issued a Silver Certificate. This was a first for the local society.

An Olympic bobsledder tells her story in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Feb. 8, 2002, in Salt Lake City. The opening ceremony for the XIX Olympic Winter Games had commenced to an enthusiastic crowd in the Rice-Eccles Stadium. And for the first time since 1932, the highest global institution in all of athletics was about to host two-woman bobsledding. Amidst all the pomp and festivities was a Midwestern girl named Jean, who helped pave the way for what was about to happen.

Legion Kettle-Fried Chicken, Feb. 3

SOLON– The Solon Sons of the American Legion will host their annual “Famous” Kettle-Fried Chicken Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Solon Legion. The menu includes all-you-can-eat, delicious kettle-fried chicken, cheesy potatoes, oven-baked beans, bread, dessert and drinks. The meal will be served from 5-7:30 p.m., with take-out available. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-12 and children under 6 eat free. Proceeds benefit Solon community and veterans projects.

Swisher Legion Chili Cook-Off Feb. 4

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion will host its annual Chili Cook-Off Sunday, Feb. 4, at the Legion. Bring one crock pot of your best chili to the Legion by 2 p.m. to be considered for first, second and third place prizes. One entry per person. The entry fee is $5.
After judging is complete, the public is welcome to an all-you-can-eat chili supper for $5. Cook-off contestants receive free admittance to the chili supper with their entry fee. For more information regarding the Swisher American Legion Chili Cook-Off, call 319-560-6111.

Parking and refreshments for Beat the Bitter at Hope Evangelical

NORTH LIBERTY– Hope Evangelical, in North Liberty, will again offer both parking and refreshments to those planning to attend the Beat the Bitter Fire and Ice event on Feb. 2.
Hope Evangelical Church, 420 N. Front St., offers any space available in its lot as convenient parking when making way to the nearby Penn Meadows Park for the scheduled events. Feel free to set up chairs on the property to watch the fireworks show. Free hot cider and cookies will be available for those who park, from 5:30- 7:30 p.m.

Troop 216 chili supper Feb. 3

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Boy Scout Troop 216 will host its 38th annual Chili Supper from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the North Liberty Community Center.
Tickets are $5. Children 5 and under are admitted free. The dinner includes all-you-can-eat meat or vegetarian chili, bread, drinks and a variety of homemade desserts, including traditional Scout cobbler.
The dinner is the troop’s primary annual fundraising event. Proceeds help cover the cost of high adventure trips, summer camp and other activities for the troop’s approximately 30 Scouts.
