The school, located near the intersection of Dubuque St. and North Liberty Road, is being built to accommodate 1,000 students initially with a 500-student addition planned for the future. Kibby anticipates opening with around 600 students, at this time, subject to attendance boundary changes and population changes in North Liberty.

Ordinance to push archers outside city limits

City council passes first reading of public safety amendment

NORTH LIBERTY– Just outside North Liberty city limits is the Johnson County Archers (JCA) shooting range. Many don’t know about the public range, said JCA Public Relations Coordinator Dan Heitzman, but soon it could be the nearest place for archery enthusiasts to shoot their bows.
At a Sept. 13 meeting, the North Liberty City Council passed the first reading of an amendment to the city code regarding public health and safety, adding arrows to the list of weapons unlawful to be discharged within city limits. Other weapons on the list include several types of firearms.

NLPD and Colony Pumpkin Patch partner for a future furry officer

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty loves its dogs and the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) is no different.
The department believes a future canine unit would be a big asset to the community by helping human officers with searches, apprehension and tracking. But, starting a K-9 program isn’t cheap– initial costs run $75,000 or more.
That’s where Dean and Katie Colony and their pumpkin patch come in.

Old Gold Diner to lock up the femme fatales

Annual fundraiser culminates with lock-in Sept. 28

SOLON– It’s time for the community to join together in a jailbreak.
Solon’s Old Gold Diner will conclude a month of fundraising activities Wednesday, Sept. 28, with a special meal, entertainment and a lock-in of female jailbirds who will have to raise bail money for the program before their release.
Last year’s Old Gold fundraiser featured the incarceration of five men who were willing to become “jailbirds” for a short amount of time, raising bail for their release by asking friends, family and program-supporters to make cash donations to the cause.
This year, it’s the women’s turn.

He’s passionate about beer

Bill Heinrich rides the craft beer wave

SOLON– Beer is an amber alcoholic beverage brewed by the fermentation of cereals, usually malted barley, and flavored with hops. Beer has been around since at least the fifth millennium B.C. in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.
In 2012, according to The Beer Institute, Americans consumed 6.3 billion gallons of beer in the previous year with an individual average of 28.3 gallons.
Whatever the 2016 consumption statistics are, Brian Heinrich can rest assured his Kickshaw Barrel Works ORB, a small-batch craft beer, will have contributed to them.
