A Dining Dilemma

Meal sites struggle with dwindling federal dollars

By Lori Lindner
Solon Economist

JOHNSON COUNTY– Increasingly, as state and federal dollars are cut from social assistance programs, local organizations and individuals are attempting to absorb the costs.
When a funding shortfall empties the plates of our nation’s elderly– those who rely on home-delivered meal programs like Meals on Wheels or who regularly attend congregate dining sites– it can become a matter of eating or going hungry.

Moving to higher ground

Volunteers from the Solon United Methodist Church youth groups and from United Action for Youth gathered in the brisk conditions at Randall Park Tuesday afternoon to help spread sand and mulch for the relocation of the park’s playground equipment. The city made the decision earlier this year to move the playground to higher ground after spring flooding eroded the base. (photos by Doug Lindner)

Deer disease outbreak no longer in effect

By Alex Kline

JOHNSON COUNTY– The outbreak of hemorrhagic disease (HD) that killed over 1,000 deer in Iowa this year has ended, said Department of Natural Resources (DNR) deer project biologist Tom Litchfield. With shotgun season, some hunters might be wondering what the local deer populations will be like after back-to-back outbreak years.
Though this year’s reported cases of hemorrhagic disease was much less than the almost 3,000 suspected deaths of 2012, the quick progression and spreading of the disease can be detrimental to local deer numbers.

Solon Public Library

Cleaning out DVDs?

If you are cleaning out your DVD shelf to make room for new additions to your collection, why not donate your old ones to the library? Your donation of goods is tax-deductible and we will either add them to our collection, or the Friends of the Library will sell them at a book sale and we can use the money to purchase new releases. It’s a win-win. We’re especially interested in any old exercise DVDs you have that you no longer use– these get a lot of circulation in the winter months as people work on New Year’s resolutions.

What if we’re just a little bit naughty?

It was HIS idea. Jolly Old Saint Nicholas conspired with Anushka Dervesh, whispering something in her ear just before her mother snapped this photo of the two of them sticking out their tongues. Santa Claus visited the North Liberty Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 7, to visit with local kids during the community’s annual Breakfast With Santa event. Children were able to enjoy a pancake breakfast, do a craft, play with Jumbe the Lion, view a toy train in action and watch a holiday video before jumping in the long line of kids waiting to sit on Santa’s lap.
