Operation ReLeaf to return in October

NORTH LIBERTY— The City of North Liberty, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Alliant Energy are again partnering for Operation ReLeaf. ReLeaf is a program that helps residential customers save energy by planting trees to shade their homes or to create a wind break, as well as improving long-term community reforestation and energy conservation through efficient landscaping.
Since 2001, Iowa has seen more than 62,265 new trees planted throughout the state due to Operation ReLeaf.

NL Summer Lunch hosts End-of-Summer Bash Friday, Aug. 14

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Summer Lunch Program will host an End-of-Summer Bash for the public on Friday, Aug. 14, at the Ranshaw House, 515 W. Penn St., North Liberty.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a presentation to thank the many volunteers, donors and restaurants that made the program’s second year a stunning success. Free lunch for all and activities for kids will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring bouncy houses, face painters, a balloon artist, and, of course, delicious free food.

CCA staff, students get cuts for a cause

TIFFIN– When is getting a haircut nothing short of an act of love?
When it is done to benefit the nonprofit organization that provides prosthetic hairpieces to pediatric patients.
Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Middle School student council organized a Locks of Love hair cutting and fundraiser event– a hair raiser, if you will– in May before the end of the school year. Stylists Kati Burns of 965 Salon & Spa in North Liberty and Dannelle Soppe and Breanna Gassmann of Shear Inspiration in Anamosa donated their time and talents to give the haircuts, with the tresses being donated to Locks of Love.

Kristine Vanderwiel, née Gleason, absorbed her experiences in 4-H and youth career conferences with excitement and hope.
Today, she passes that on as a youth mentor, inspiring and encouraging girls interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

OXFORD– Something just doesn’t make sense to Lydia Bringer.
“I don’t understand why I have this love for the flag more than kids who were born here.”
Bringer was born in Mexico and came to the United States legally after the death of her mother. She underwent the long, arduous and expensive process to gain citizenship and proudly proclaimed the Pledge of Allegiance when it was granted. Before she accepted citizenship, she did a little soul searching.

Festival will be held Sunday, Aug. 16, at the Ely American Legion Hall, located at 1545 Main St. in Ely. This fundraiser is for St. Luke’s Child Protection Center.

Clothing sought for 175th Anniversary Style Show

SOLON– Vintage clothing wanted! In conjunction with the celebration of Solon’s 175th Anniversary, a committee from the GFWC Solon’s Women’s Club is preparing a vintage clothing style show. The committee is seeking items of clothing that would be applicable for the Style Show. New candidates emerge in IC school board race

One week after Baruah resigns, list of candidates is finalized

IOWA CITY – The ballot is complete for the upcoming school board election on Sept. 8.
Voters in the Iowa City Community School District will elect five new members to the district’s Board of Directors.
The fifth open seat was revealed on July 22, when Director Tuyet Baruah announced her resignation from the board in a YouTube video. She was serving her second term, set to expire in 2017. With her resignation, effective in September, she will continue on the board until a new director is elected to complete her term.
