Bill Greazel retires from Johnson County Assessor’s Office

IOWA CITY– The tax man cometh, and stayed for 42 years.
Johnson County Assessor Bill Greazel celebrated his retirement from more than four decades of service with a reception on Friday, Sept. 25. Those years brought many changes, innovations and advancements to the assessor’s office, as well as many lessons to the man himself.
First, life is full of happy accidents.

Oct. 25 Stone Soup Supper, Silent Auction to benefit pantry

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry will host its 7th Annual Stone Soup Supper and Silent Auction on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 4-7 p.m. at the South Slope Community Room, 980 N. NORTH LIBERTY– Several North Liberty churches will host the Make A Difference service project on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 8 a.m. to noon. Work teams will be fan out all over North Liberty performing community service for three hours. Service projects will include yard work, winter weatherization of homes, small construction jobs and many other projects, at no cost, to improve lives in the North Liberty community.
Everyone is welcome to participate. Children and youth are welcome with their families. This is a great way to include the whole family in serving the community.

SOLON– In November 1942, a Japanese torpedo sank the USS Juneau, a light cruiser. Among the dead were five brothers from Waterloo: George, Francis, Joseph, Madison and Albert Sullivan. News of the deaths of the five Sullivan brothers became a rally cry for the war effort as their story went nationwide.

Our Lord’s Church to host Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 17

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will hold its 11th annual Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the church, located at 131 N. Market St.
The soup luncheon will feature homemade chili, chicken noodle and chicken tortilla soup, along with hot dogs, chili dogs and drinks. The bake sale will include fresh farm eggs, bread from the Sykora Bakery and other member specialties.
The church will again be selling Dutch Letters, a pastry from Pella, crafts and other items. Dutch Letter orders must be made and paid in advance by Oct. 12.

Lady Spartans’ Digging for a Cure Cancer Night Tuesday, Oct. 13

SOLON– The Solon High School volleyball team will be hosting a fundraiser for the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center Tuesday, Oct. 13, the team’s last home match of the season.
The Lady Spartans’ Digging for a Cure Cancer Night will include a silent auction, bake sale and 50/50 raffle with all proceeds donated.
The match will feature Solon against Anamosa, and will include a recognition of senior Solon players.

Interchange exchange: I-380 and I-80 coming

IDOT shares project plan with public

CORALVILLE– About 150 people attended a public information meeting last week at the Coralville Public Library to learn more about the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) planned Interstate 80/I-380 interchange upgrade and new Forevergreen interchange project.
Several long tables held aerial view maps of the areas that will be affected by the construction. Although no presentation was made, officials were on hand to answer questions posed those in attendance.

Parks and rec. commission pursuing splash pad project

SOLON– The Solon Parks and Recreation Commission is looking to make a splash with its new fundraising campaign.
With a target goal of $400,000, the commission is asking residents to step forward with contributions for a community splash pad.
And according to commission member Kelsey Bumsted, over 30 individuals have already kicked in nearly $5,000.

Officials pitch dirt for Penn Meadows sports pavilion

NORTH LIBERTY– A major project in Penn Meadows Park is in full swing.
A groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 21 marked the spot for the new Penn Meadows Park Pavilion and Commemorative Baseball Diamond, a collaborative project between the City of North Liberty and the North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) organization. The new pavilion will include a concession stand, a shelter with seating, a storage area and much-needed restrooms.
NLYBS President Scott Rundle led off the event with remarks about the facility.
