Results positive for CCA

Voters approve $48 million bond issue

OXFORD– Voters in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District approved a $48 million bond issue last Tuesday (Feb. 4) 79 percent to 21 percent. The measure, which required 60 percent to pass, allows the district to sell bonds to finance the construction of a new elementary school on the east side of Tiffin and expand the middle school, also in Tiffin. Also approved is expanding the high school and improvements to Amana Elementary.
A total of 1,237 votes were cast, with 989 yes, and 268 no votes.

ICCSD preliminary budget relies on assumptions, waits on state aid

IOWA CITY– Craig Hansel, chief financial officer/board of education secretary of the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD), began finalization of the fiscal year 2015 budget by reviewing the certified budget assumptions at the school board Operations Committee meeting on Jan. 28.
Hansel discussed a potential increase in property taxes.

Taylor wins close mayoral election in Swisher

Just 15 votes separate two candidates Feb. 4

SWISHER– Fifteen votes.
That’s how close the mayoral election was Tuesday, Feb. 4, in this small northwestern Johnson County community as voters decided who would replace Tim Mason as mayor.
Christopher J. Taylor won the special election with 151 of 288 total votes (52 percent) against 136 votes (47 percent) for Randy Hurlbert. The seat was vacated in November when Mason abruptly resigned minutes after City Clerk Connie Meier resigned. Council member Mary Gudenkauf has been acting as mayor pro tempore ever since, albeit reluctantly.

Clear Creek Amana students earn all-state music honors

TIFFIN– Two Clear Creek Amana (CCA) students attained the highest individual honor available to Iowa high school musicians by being selected to participate in the Iowa All-State music festival in Ames held in November. Ashly Ives, the daughter of Brian and Kylan Ives of Oxford and Andrey Floryanovich, son of Sergey and Anna Floryanovich of Tiffin, were both accepted into the 282 piece All-State Band.

Softball and baseball can drive on Saturday, Feb. 8

SOLON– The Solon High School softball and baseball programs will be conducting a joint can drive on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Players, parents and supporters of these programs will be fanned out in the community in search of cans. If you already have cans collected, these programs would appreciate your donation.

School board looking at Sept. bond vote

$25M buys a middle school, auditorium and a few other extras

SOLON– It looks more and more like the Solon Community School District (SCSD) will put a bond issue before voters in the district in September.
The rough outline includes an auditorium addition at the high school, a new middle school and a few other add-ons at a cost of somewhere between $23 to $25 million.
And while it’s still all conceptual, the discussions are ongoing.
