Dr. Davis Eidahl selected by school board as new Solon superintendent

Ottumwa super to replace Miller

By Doug Lindner
Solon Economist
SOLON– After his semifinal interview with the Solon Community School District Board of Education last week, Dr. Davis Eidahl knew Solon was the right place.
“The questions that the board asked, the priorities that they identified, they’re really focused on that student achievement, making sure that those students that enter into the Solon district, they leave with a tremendous educational advantage because of the experiences they had,” Eidahl said. “And that is really right up my alley and something that excites me.”

Supervisors, Shueyville discuss improvements to Curtis Bridge Road

Unique situation, unique proposal

SHUEYVILLE– For anybody who has driven the length of Curtis Bridge Road in northwest Johnson County, to say it is in bad shape would be an understatement. Its dilapidated condition led county officials to move the road up on its Five-year Road Maintenance and Improvement Plan, with work scheduled to begin late this summer.
Some surface material will be ground down, and the road will be widened two feet on either side before a hot asphalt overlay is applied for a smoother ride.

Solon FBLA can drive May 30

SOLON– Save your pop cans. As a way to raise money to help a student attend and compete at the National Leadership Conference, Solon FBLA will conduct a pop can drive on Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to noon. Those wishing to drop off cans and bottles may do so at the high school. Those wishing to donate but unable to do so during the day of the can drive, please contact Jodi Leimkuehler at the high school at 319-624-3401.

Work will be done in segments. As each segment is being improved, its temporary closure will be required until the work is complete and the trail segment is safe to reopen.

Mowing roadside ditches prohibited before July 15

JOHNSON COUNTY– Johnson County’s Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management (IRVM) program reminds residents, landowners and local road maintenance crews that Iowa law prohibits the mowing of ditches along county secondary roads and state primary and interstate highways each year prior to July 15. The no-mow order allows time for hatching and development of ground-nesting birds and pollinators.
Johnson County Roadside Vegetation Manager Chris Henze said that in 2010, legislation changed the date from July 1 to July 15.
