Deadline extended for census jobs in N. Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– In the near future, the U.S. Census Bureau will conduct a Special Census in North Liberty. The City of North Liberty has requested it and will incur the cost. Local residents are needed to work as enumerators. Enumerators visit households and collect a facts about each member such as name, age, and relationship to the householder. Enumerators are paid $13.55 per hour, plus mileage and paid training.

Council still not sold on 60-foot lots

SOLON– Maybe later.
The members of the Solon City Council aren’t opposed to the idea of allowing reduced-width lots in single-family residential areas, but they want to wait until the city’s comprehensive plan is updated before moving forward.
That message was relayed to developer Corey Hodapp at a July 1 council meeting when the subject of a possible R1(B) zoning district was again discussed.

Johnson County Farm Bureau showcases agriculture at Ag Fest

IOWA CITY — The theme for the Johnson County Farm Bureau’s 2015 Agriculture Fest was “From our Farm to your Table: Eat Healthy, Live Healthy.”
Kathy Swenka, the local Farm Bureau coordinator for Ag in the Classroom said the event was in its 21st year, and an ideal event for families to have fun while learning about the vital role agriculture plays in their day-to-day lives.

UI’s Science Café brings scientific discussion to Iowa communities

SOLON– How about adding a few scientific facts to your meal tonight?
That’s exactly what the Science Café Series, a University of Iowa created program, aims to do as it brings scientific discussion to restaurants and bars across small towns in Iowa.
The series, which started in October of 2013, covers a different topic each session and brings experts from all scientific fields to engage in discussion with community members. These events are free and open to any who wish to attend.

Football team hosting car wash after Beef Days Parade July 18

SOLON– The Solon High School varsity football team will be hosting a car wash following the Solon Beef Days Parade on Saturday, July 18, from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Bridge Community Bank parking lot. Proceeds will be used to support the 2015 Solon football program.

Beef Days and RAGBRAI
The library will change its hours during Beef Days. The library will close at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 17, and remain closed all day on Saturday, July 18.
RAGBRAI, will travel through Solon on July 24 from 8 a.m. through late afternoon. Although it may be difficult to reach the library due to road closings, it will maintain its normal operating hours.

Chop Chop Food and Fitness Camps

SOLON– Registration is open for the second annual Chop Chop Camp, a Food and Fitness Experience, scheduled for August 10-11, at the Solon United Methodist Church Family Life Center, and August 12-13 at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. For youth completing third and fourth grades during the 2014-15 school year, the camp focuses on hands-on food preparation and nutrition, fitness and games, and agriculture literacy through field trips, workshops and “lunch and learn.”

ICCSD discusses changes to special education programs

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District’s sensitivity and lack of communication regarding its special education programs has been called into question, as community members gathered to speak about changes to the program at the Tuesday, June 9, school board meeting.
First, parents voiced concerns about the district’s plans to move Shimek Elementary School’s special education program.

Colony Pumpkin Patch supports local food pantry

NORTH LIBERTY– During the last three autumn seasons, Dean and Katie Colony, of Colony Pumpkin Patch in North Liberty, have offered a corn maze that contains dead-ends, detours, loops to be navigated and, somewhere among the stalks, routes to the exit.
Ostensibly designed for the entertainment of visitors, the themes for Colonys’ mazes are also purposefully chosen to create meaningful connections between people and the community.

CCA’s STEM Center is on time and on budget

TIFFIN— A challenge was issued in late April on the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District’s campus in Tiffin. Joe Greathouse, Assistant Professor in the Construction Management program and spearhead for the district’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Center, addressed a crowd of students, parents and local construction industry representatives packed into the middle school library.
“Not to scare you, but once school is out, you’ve got 77 days to build it,” he had said. “So, no pressure.”
