CCA Middle School expansion completion pushed back…again

OXFORD— Hopes of moving into Clear Creek Amana’s new middle school addition over the Christmas and New Year break were dashed last week.
Superintendent Tim Kuehl gave the monthly construction update to the school board at its Monday, Dec. 14, meeting in Oxford.
“I was hoping for moving everything over Christmas, which, of course, is not happening,” Kuehl said. The move-in timeframe has been pushed to January.

Salvation Army kettle placed at Sam’s Main Street Market

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Salvation Army has been welcomed into the Solon community. Sam’s Main Street Market is hosting a countertop Red Kettle to support the “Give Hope Today” holiday season.
Solon community member Alison Holroyd contacted the Johnson County Salvation Army to get her town involved this Christmas. With the support of Sam’s Main Street Market, a countertop Red Kettle has been placed by the check-out register. A Salvation Army bell accompanies the kettle and will be rung with each donation though Dec. 24.

Dolfi Kalm wins volleyball gold medals

Even at age 74, volleyball dreams do come true

LISBON– The year 2015 has been a year of dreams coming true for Lisbon’s Dolfi Kalm, formerly of Solon. Kalm won a pair of gold medals in national volleyball championships in Detroit and Minneapolis. However, the road to those championships was far longer than the several hours spent driving the highways.
A native of Maynard, Kalm started his teaching career in Atkinson, Neb., moved to Oklahoma to teach and moved back to Nebraska for three years, ahead of taking a principal position in Gladbrook.

Mercy’s Mobile Mammography Van available in Solon Jan. 20

SOLON– The Mercy Women’s Center mobile mammography van will be in Solon on Wednesday, Jan. 20. The van will be located at the Mercy Family Medicine of Solon Clinic. The clinic was formally known as Solon Family Practice, and is located at 510 West Main St. The mobile mammography unit has been providing convenient access to breast screening services for Eastern Iowa women for nearly 20 years.

City tags dog park as high priority

Revised parks plan under review

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty will officially join the hunt for land on which to place a dog park.
North Liberty Parks and Recreation Board members and the North Liberty City Council met in a joint work session Dec. 3 to review a draft of an updated Parks Comprehensive Plan, and informally added an off-leash dog park as a priority.

Liberty High transition team looks to build athletics community early

School won’t likely include varsity football in first year

IOWA CITY – The Liberty Lightning will strike a year early for some North Liberty student athletes.
The Liberty High School transition team outlined its plan for athletics for the Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors on Dec. 8. Under the plan, Liberty-bound students involved in athletics will be able to practice as Lightning Bolts in the 2016-17 school year—a full year before Liberty High School actually opens.
Matt Degner, the district’s director of schools, presented the update to the board.
