Poppy Days contributions aid veterans

SOLON– Every year near Memorial Day, members of the American Legion Auxiliary go door-to-door in neighborhoods to distribute poppies in remembrance of all our service men and women who died in defense of our freedom. The poppies are made by disabled and hospitalized veterans and all contributions are used in programs to aid vets and their families. Various businesses in Solon will have donation containers and poppies through Memorial Day. Contributions are greatly appreciated.

Solon Color Guard celebrates 70 years

SOLON– The Solon American Legion Color Guard remembered and celebrated 70 years of service to the community on April 26. Nineteen members and their guests enjoyed the evening with dinner and retelling of stories.

NL wastewater treatment plant to be expanded

Estimates reach $15.3 million, bids put off until May 21

NORTH LIBERTY– Even cities sometimes have to go with the flow.
Bids for North Liberty’s wastewater treatment facility expansion project were due May 7 and were expected to be considered at this week’s council meeting, but City Administrator Ryan Heiar told the council some potential contractors declined to bid because of several other large project bids due the same day.
Therefore, the bid deadline was changed to May 21.

Students, pros have 77 days to build CCA’s STEM Center

TIFFIN— Shortly after the end of the current school year, construction will begin on the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Center on the campus of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District in Tiffin. At the heart of the project will be a dozen students from CCA and other schools in Kirkwood Community College’s seven-county area. The students will work alongside seasoned professionals as they gain hands-on training in the construction trades, as well as college credit through Kirkwood.

The North Liberty City Council at its April 28 meeting approved another grant application to help fund restoration of the turn-of-the-century home owned by the city.

Blues and BBQ launches volunteer recruitment

NORTH LIBERTY– In preparation for the ninth annual festival, North Liberty Blues and BBQ, presented by South Slope Cooperative Communications, has launched volunteer signup at northlibertyblues.org/volunteer. The festival will be held July 11 in North Liberty’s new Centennial Park.
The festival requires more than 200 community volunteers each year doing jobs as diverse as setting up and tearing down equipment, assisting kids into inflatable rides, serving craft beer, directing cars to parking and much more.

NL’s Holy Trinity exceeds goal in fight against hunger

NORTH LIBERTY– If just 25¢ can buy a child one meal, imagine what $22,000 can do.
That’s how much North Liberty’s Holy Trinity Church members raised, with help from the entire community and 18 area business sponsors, to benefit Kids Against Hunger this year.
West High School senior Mareda Smith, daughter of Pastor Tim Smith and his wife Lisa, along with West High graduate Abby Heller, organized Holy Trinity’s event and led hundreds of congregation members and volunteers in a day-long packing session March 28.

May 15 event to promote 1105, services in Johnson County

IOWA CITY– The public is invited to attend a program promoting social services in Johnson County and raise money for the 1105 Project on May 15 from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. at the 1105 Project Building, 1105 Gilbert Ct. in Iowa City. Suggested donation is $10 with proceeds to benefit the 1105 Project. West Bank will provide coffee, rolls, and juice; parking is available at the site or on the street.

Reduce waste, get convenience with curbside composting program

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s curbside composting program can take almost anything you throw at it. Fruit? Easy. Meat? No problem. Greasy pizza boxes? You bet. Reduce the amount of trash sent to the landfill each week; it’s good for the pocketbook and the environment.
Participants need to provide a compost bin lined with a yard waste bag, available for $1.65 at a variety of stores in North Liberty. Bins may be placed curbside on collection day for pick up.

Signals at Penn Street/Highway 965 will be offline Friday, May 15

NORTH LIBERTY — Weather permitting, on Friday, May 15, traffic signals at the intersection of Highway 965 and Penn Street will be offline starting at 9 a.m. so crews can upgrade the signal heads and replace the cabinet that controls the intersection’s signals. The work is expected to be completed by midday. While the signals are down, the intersection will be controlled by a flagger.
