OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School Board fielded comments about its softball diamond at a regular meeting last Wednesday, but Superintendent Tim Kuehl made it clear: there is no money in the district’s budget for a new sports complex.

Liberty’s Gate in NL to expand

More rental housing to be built on NL’s west side

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council has approved another group of rental housing and commercial buildings to be built on the city’s west side.
Liberty’s Gate development is near the intersection of Kansas Avenue and Madison Avenue, an area already peppered with commercial and residential development. The development group is preparing to add another commercial building and a single 28-plex residential building with two 8-stall garages in 3.26 acres on the southwest corner of the intersection.

Legion to host Red White and Bluegrass Festival Friday, July 3

NORTH LIBERTY­­– The North Liberty American Legion Post No. 1976 will host its fifth annual Red White and Bluegrass Festival on Friday, July 3, at American Legion Post 1976, 2349 Mehaffey Bridge Rd., North Liberty. The festival will feature music by Going Up Caney, Frank F. Sidney’s Western Bandit Volunteers, Slew Grass, Cedar County Cobras and the Dirty River Ramblers. Music begins at 4 p.m. and ends at midnight. Adult admission is $10, and kids 14 years and under enter free. The post’s annual flag retirement ceremony will be held at 9:30 p.m., followed by a free fireworks display.

SOLON– The public is invited to see the fireworks over Lake Macbride on Saturday, July 4, with the show beginning at dusk. Rain date is July 5.
Public support for the event is greatly appreciated. Donations may be sent to Mark Ramsey at 1598 Spartan Ct. NE, Solon, IA 52333. Checks should be made payable to Fireworks Fund. This is a Cottage Reserve-sponsored night. The Solon Beef Days Committee has provided assistance with expenses.

North Liberty residents invited to Hawkeye game Sept. 5

IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa Athletic Department will host North Liberty Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 5, when the Iowa football team entertains Illinois State in its 2015 season opener.
Any member of the North Liberty community can purchase an unlimited number of $40 group rate adult tickets and $25 youth tickets. The single game ticket price is $55 per seat.

Thanksgiving in July food drive, Turkey Trot 10k/5k/1 mile event to be July 11

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry will host its third annual Thanksgiving in July and Turkey Trot 10k/5k Races/Family 1 Mile Event on Saturday, July 11, at 8 a.m., in conjunction with a community wide food drive to provide food assistance to the hungry. The chip-timed race will begin and end at Centennial Park located at 1565 St. Andrews Drive.

This is the first installment of a three-part series on the ways the North Liberty Fire Department– a volunteer unit with only three paid positions– continues to meet the challenges of protecting an ever-growing community.

NORTH LIBERTY— As of 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, the North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD) had responded to 333 alarms. Assistant Chief William Schmooke expects plenty more.
“We’re going to push over 1,000 calls this year,” he said, up from 983 last year.

RAGBRAI test riders sample Solon’s hospitality

Joanne Ulch and members of the Solon Spartans 8U baseball team and Solon Spartans 10U softball team serve up pie, lemonade and water to members of the RAGBRAI Route Inspection Pre-Ride Team Friday at the intersection of Main and Dubuque streets. The baseball and softball teams will have a vendor booth at the Solon RAGBRAI stopover July 24 and were picked to provide samples for the pre-ride. The pies were handmade by Helen Proffitt and featured fruit from her own trees. “The whole scene down there was to give the Ragbrai committee a taste of what Solon offers,” Ulch said.

DOT confirms funding for Hwy 1 stoplight

City to receive $115,900 grant for $238,590 project

SOLON– It’s finally official.
The City of Solon has received notice from the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) of a $115,900 grant to help pay for a traffic signal at the intersection of Highway 1 and Main Street.
The city has known of the DOT’s pending award for months, but it wasn’t official until the city received the grant agreement, which was approved by the members of the Solon City Council at a June 3 meeting.

CEDAR RAPIDS– Jenny Houlihan has done a lot in her 13-year nursing career. She’s the current Director of Acute Adult Services at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids; she serves as secretary for her district’s chapter of the Iowa Organization of Nurse Leaders; she earned a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Iowa; and she is a long-time member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.
She also holds the prestigious position of Girl Scout Troop #5819 leader.
The list just keeps on growing, especially now that she’s been named one of Iowa’s 100 Great Nurses.

City Wide Clean Up Day June 13

SOLON– The City of Solon will host its annual City Wide Clean Up Day on Saturday, June 13, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. City residents may drop off garbage and recyclables at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Those dropping off should be prepared to present identification.
