Tiffany Ontiverous of Cedar Park, Texas, visited her parents, Lee and Janine Norman, over the weekend of Sept. 17-18.

Maurice and Rachel Garnant celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 4, with a family gathering at the Ox Yoke Inn in Amana. Guests included James, Sherry, Anna and Katie Garnant of Ely; Kris Garnant and Skip Willets of Cedar Rapids; Maureen Smith and Roger Burgess of Clinton, and Leo Truhlar of Cedar Rapids. Mr. Garnant and the former Rachel Truhlar were married on Sept. 6, 1949 in Des Moines.

Third time the charm for Shueyville man

SHUEYVILLE– For Shueyville’s John Williams, the third time was not only the charm, but also charmed.
Williams, a retired teacher from the College Community School District’s Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids, participated in the 2016 Great Race cross-country road rally and made it all the way from near the California coast to Moline, Ill.
This was Williams’ third attempt at the event, held annually since the early 1980s, and the first time he made it from starting line to finish line.

NL city council approves Dubuque Street speeds, 4-1

NORTH LIBERTY– Drivers expecting a return to a 50 mph Dubuque Street near Liberty High School can wave that notion goodbye.
At its Sept. 13 meeting, the North Liberty City Council approved a 35 mph speed limit between the eastbound and westbound curves along Dubuque Street, including the new roundabout. The 50 mph approaches from both directions will remain.

City of Tiffin moves to widen, modernize Roberts Ferry Rd.

TIFFIN– With the extension of Ireland Avenue now complete, the City of Tiffin is ready to roll out another long-anticipated road improvement project.
A public hearing was held Tuesday, Sept. 20, during a regular city council meeting to address the widening of Roberts Ferry Road from Highway 6 to West Goldfinch Drive, a project Jay Anderson of Hart-Frederick Consultants said he began working on back in 1998.
“This was supposed to be phase one,” he said. “For some reason we did phase three first, which was the top half of Roberts Ferry.”

Annual festival Oct. 8 at Colony Pumpkin Patch

NORTH LIBERTY– The Colony Pumpkin Patch kicks off the fall season Saturday, Oct. 8, with food, fun, games, demonstrations and more.
Activities, including the 5-acre corn maze and pick-your-own pumpkins, take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Weekend admission is $8 per person.
This year’s corn maze at highlights the North Liberty Police Department’s campaign to bring a K-9 officer and dog to the force. A portion of all the season’s sales support the initiative.

Halloween Moonlight Walk Oct. 14

NORTH LIBERTY– Come take a stroll around a decorated Liberty Centre Pond under the moonlight Friday, Oct. 14, at 6:30 p.m.
The pathway will be illuminated by hundreds of lantern bags and friendly ghosts will be set up along the way waiting for you to snap a picture. Snacks and a movie will start at 8 p.m. sharp at the North Liberty Recreation Center.
All ages are welcome but children must be supervised. The fee is $1 per person; children 2 years and under are free. Meet at the Rec Center south parking lot for the walk.

Nominations sought for Hall of Fame

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty is seeking nominations for 2016 induction into the community’s Hall of Fame. The award was developed in 2013 to recognize individuals who provided extraordinary public service and dedication to the community.

Donate to food pantry through Scouting for Food program Oct. 15

NORTH LIBERTY– Every year, the Hawkeye Area Council of the Boy Scouts hosts Scouting for Food throughout the Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and surrounding communities in order to assist in stocking the shelves of local food pantries.
Be on the lookout for a pink Scouting for Food bag that should have arrived on your door the week of Oct 8. Scouts from North Liberty Packs 216, 275, and 279 along with Troop 216 have been working with each other to coordinate bag delivery and food pick up for the community of North Liberty.

NORTH LIBERTY– Girl Scouts invites all go-getters, innovators, risk-takers and leaders to join Girl Scouts for a year of fun, friendship and adventure. Elementary schools in North Liberty will host information meetings on Wednesday, Oct. 5, and Tuesday, Oct. 11, for parents to sign their daughters up for the largest girl-led organization in the world. Girl Scouts provides fun opportunities for girls to build the confidence to change the world.

SUTLIFF– Sutliff was one of the areas preparing for Cedar River flooding.
On Friday, Sept. 23, Rod Sullivan, chairman of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors and a Lisbon native, was at the site to investigate the potential impact of floodwaters on the Sutliff Bridge.
“At 24.1 feet of water, the water level will touch some of the metal at the base of the bridge,” Sullivan said. “It won’t be as high as it was in 2008, though.”
