Kites for Kids festivals in North Liberty April 18

Kite festival to help end child abuse April 18 in NL

NORTH LIBERTY– Kids will receive free kites to fly in remembrance of children lost to abuse at two upcoming Kites for Kids festivals in North Liberty and Iowa City.
The festivals will be noon-2 p.m., Saturday, April 18, in North Liberty on the grounds of North Central Junior High, and noon-2 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at Iowa City’s Lower City Park, Shelter 5.
Both events are free and open to the public and sponsored by the Johnson County Community Partnership for Protecting Children (JC-CPPC) in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Work begins on 230th Street and Highway 965

NORTH LIBERTY– Weather permitting, 230th Street will close between 8 Point Trail and Highway 965 in North Liberty on Monday, April 20, so crews can widen the road. The work is expected to last approximately two weeks.
230th Street will serve as a local detour route when Highway 965 closes for construction, expected the first week of May.
The Highway 965 project includes rebuilding the highway’s intersections with Dubuque Street and Scales Bend Road/240th Street, flattening the curve, adding traffic signals, crosswalks, sidewalks and trails, and landscaping.

Shueyville All Church Garage Sale May 2

SHUEYVILLE– The Shueyville United Methodist Church will hold its All Church Garage Sale on Saturday, May 2, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1195 Steeple Ln. NE in Shueyville. Merchandise will be priced at $3 per full grocery bag. Proceeds from the garage sale will support a mission in Progresso, Mexico, for school children.

NL’s “Make A Difference Day” is April 18

NORTH LIBERTY– Several North Liberty churches will host the service project “Make A Difference Day” on Saturday, April 18, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Work teams from several local churches will fan out all over North Liberty to perform community service.
Service projects could include yard work, small construction jobs, window washing, painting or other projects at little or no cost, to improve the lives of North Liberty residents.

April 19 pancake breakfast, raffle - Oxford American Legion

OXFORD– The Oxford American Legion Post 537 will hold a breakfast and raffle fundraiser on April 19 from 7:30 a.m. until 12 noon, at 128 E. Main St. in Oxford.
Buy tickets now for the chance to win a 21-inch, self-propelled Troy Built lawn mower. Proceeds will go to Boys State or Legion scholarships for graduates. Raffle tickets are $5 each. The drawing will be held April 19 after the breakfast. Purchase tickets at the Legion or call 319-828-1008 to make arrangements to meet someone to purchase them.

Hills Bank celebrates agriculture month

NORTH LIBERTY– March was agriculture month at Hills Bank and Trust Company, and what better way to celebrate than inviting a few chicks over?
It was baby chick day at North Liberty’s Forevergreen Road location on Saturday, March 28. Doors opened to the public so children and families could visit the baby chicks hatched at the bank earlier this month.

Supt. Miller leaving Solon to head AEA

SOLON– It was a tough decision, but it was a big opportunity as well.
Solon Community School District (SCSD) Superintendent Sam Miller has accepted a position as chief administrator at Area Education Agency (AEA) 267 in Cedar Falls.
He will remain with the district until his current contract ends June 30.
The Solon school board held a special meeting Tuesday, April 7, to consider Miller’s resignation and the timeline for a superintendent search. The board hired Ray and Associates of Cedar Rapids to begin the process of recruiting Miller’s replacement.

Fuel tax increase provides extra funding for county road project

JOHNSON COUNTY– An increase in the fuel tax might cause anger at the pumps, but some drivers in Johnson County will realize its benefits yet this year.

RAGBRAI information meetings to be held April 17 and 20

SOLON– The City of Solon will host two informational meetings for Solon businesses, local churches and non-profit organizations interested in having a vendor booth for RAGBRAI July 24 in Solon. The community is invited to attend one of these meetings to be held at city hall on Friday, April 17, at 10 a.m. or Monday, April 20, at 7 p.m. City staff will review the route through Solon, Main Street business outdoor service areas and vendor booth information.

Support the library

The Solon Public Library Foundation, a non-profit organization, was established in 2004 to provide support for long term library services. The Foundation’s first project was to provide a Web-based catalog system. The online access allows patrons to browse the library catalog, reserve books and extend check out periods. Upgrading the digital capabilities of the library was also a part of the project.
The Foundation is currently looking to fill three positions on their board. The term for each position is three years.

Old Gold Diner celebrates 35th

SOLON– Solon’s Old Gold Diner will celebrate its 35th anniversary Wednesday, April 15, with musical entertainment by Johnny Krob.
Other April events include
• Old Gold Diner Site Council meets April 28 at 1:30 p.m.
Reservations must be made the day before by 1 p.m. (for Monday call by 1 p.m. the Friday before)
All ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $3.25 per person no matter their age.

Create your own art at April 11 Art for the Arts Spotlight FUNraiser 

SOLON– On Saturday, April 11, local artist Lianne Westcot will host and provide step-by-step guidance in her studio in Swisher for the creation of a 16x20 canvas called Springtime Symphony. The public is encouraged to attend and participate in its creation.
There will be two sessions, both on Saturday, April 11, the first at 3:30 p.m. and the second at 7:30 p.m. No painting experience necessary.
Solon Spotlight will provide light snacks. Participants are encouraged to bring your favorite beverage– only non-alcoholic beverages at the 3:30 p.m. seating.
