Another piece of the GuideLink funding puzzle falls into place

NL City Council approves 28E agreement with Johnson County for the Access Center

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council approved a 28E agreement with Johnson County for funding the GuideLink Center, also known as the Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center (BHUCC), or access center. The council, meeting online due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, voted 5-0 in favor of the agreement, which provides a $500,000 contribution for construction of the facility. Payments by the city will be made at various points throughout the project, which was scheduled to resume construction the week of March 2, with a November completion and December opening anticipated.

NORTH LIBERTY– As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, businesses have had to adjust how they deliver service to their customers out of an abundance of caution.
For South Slope Cooperative Communications, headquartered in North Liberty, precautions against spreading the virus have led to several changes in-house, as well as how their technicians operate in customers’ houses.

Infected employee triggers closures and cleaning

AMANA– Whirlpool’s Amana refrigeration plant was shut down on Tuesday, March 24, after an employee had been diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus.
According to Whirlpool spokesman Chad Parks, the individual had not been in the plant since Tuesday, March 17, but did report close contact with one other employee, who was subsequently sent home.
“We are working closely with local health authorities to provide the necessary support for our colleagues and we are wishing them well,” Parks said in response to an email inquiry.

CCA board discusses how COVID-19 may impact district funding

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District, like districts across the state, has been directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools were recommended to close for four weeks on March 15 by Gov. Kim Reynolds, and are tentatively scheduled to reopen on Monday, April 13. While the district cannot, under Iowa law, force its students to participate in online learning, many teachers are providing lessons as the district provides tablets and Internet connectivity.

SWISHER– The COVID-19 pandemic has led to store shelves being emptied as worried shoppers grab supplies they think they need in case of being quarantined or ordered to remain at home.
Among the items being hoarded is hand sanitizer.
While not a replacement for soap and water, it is a product recommended to help minimize the spread of illnesses, including COVID-19, and recently people most at-risk have had great difficulty in finding hand sanitizer to purchase.

North Liberty closes buildings to public

NORTH LIBERTY To protect employees and public from the spread of disease caused by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus, known as COVID-19, the City of North Liberty closed all buildings to the public, effective at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17. The closure is expected to last at least until April 13.
The public is urged to practice social distancing, avoid groups larger than 10 and take other steps to slow the spread of this disease.
The city will maintain its essential services, including water, wastewater, fire and police, as well as continue to provide other services remotely.

P&Z Commission approves changes requested by Farm Bureau, supervisors to decide on April 9

IOWA CITY– Farmers tend to have a knack for fixing things from fences to tractors, and anything in-between. Johnson County’s farmers have been itching for an opportunity to fix problems they see with the county’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), which was passed in December by the board of supervisors and implemented on Jan. 15. The Johnson County Farm Bureau took the first step in making repairs and adjustments to the UDO by submitting an application to amend the UDO’s text, at a cost of $750.

COVID-19 quarantine care kits

IOWA CITY– Four United Methodist Churches (UMC) in the Iowa City Metro area are creating and distributing COVID-19 quarantine care kits. These simple kits are designed to provide comfort and encouragement. Each care kit includes a request form, which aids in responding to specific needs within a household, if possible.
Reverend Beth Graham from First UMC in North Liberty stated, “We are praying with our neighbors, and our faith moves us to action.”
Reverend Sarah Rohret from St. Mark’s UMC added, “We are interested because we love our neighbors, and we want to always show them we care.”

Gun shots fired outside business in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– At approximately 2:20 a.m., on March 14, officers with the North Liberty Police Department responded to the area of the 500 block of Penn Court in reference to the report of several gunshots. Multiple callers reported there were several gunshots and a lot of cars leaving from the rear of 580 N. Madison Ave., and a subject running with a gun.
Arriving officers located several spent shell casings in the rear parking lot of the building. Officers also observed holes in the rear of the building consistent with bullet holes. At the time, there were no known victims.
