If a student leaves Solon, can they still open enroll and attend?

Board amends policy to give students who move away automatic approval

SOLON– Can we keep them?
Only if the policy says so.
The Solon Community School District (SCSD) board continued its discussion of open enrollment at a Feb. 9 meeting. This time, the topic turned to what should be the policy for students who move out of the district but wish to continue to attend Solon schools.
According to the Department of Education, the district can give priority to those students as long as it’s included in the Insufficient Classroom Space Policy.

Senior Advocates seeking nominations for Senior of the Year

SOLON– May has been declared the month to honor seniors and the Solon Senior Advocates are seeking nominations for the 2015 Solon Senior of the Year. Send in your written nomination for the person you feel best fits the criteria of this award.
Qualifications for Solon Senior of the Year must be someone who has given of themselves in service to the community through volunteerism, enhancing the well-being of others or someone always ready to assist or provide help when needed. The nominee should live in Solon or the immediate area and be over 60 years of age.

Babygarten

Babygarten helps to nurture the bond between caregiver and child, increase eye-hand coordination and develop body awareness. This rhythmic program will enrich your child’s life from the very beginning and provides an excellent foundation for the future. Our next session of Babygarten will run March 6 through April 10, on Fridays, at 9:30 a.m. Registration for the program is now open. Each session will feature music, board books, and toys for children ages birth to 24 months.

Booster Club’s 2nd annual celebration of athletics Feb. 27

SOLON– The Solon Athletic Booster Club will host its Second Annual Celebration of Solon Athletics on Friday, Feb. 27, at the AvaCentre in Solon with entertainment starting at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.
Everyone is welcome for dinner and a night of entertainment with proceeds benefitting Solon High School and Middle School athletics. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with pre-dinner music, the coaches presenting the state of each program and a keynote address by Marshall Koehn, University of Iowa football player and 2011 Solon graduate.

Spotlight Spaghetti Dinner and Musical Showcase March 9

SOLON– Mark your calendars for Monday, March 9, for the annual Solon Spotlight Spaghetti Dinner and Musical Showcase. The dinner will be held in the Solon High School commons. The menu includes: spaghetti, salad, bread, drink and dessert. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under and student performers. Serving times are from 4:45 until 7 p.m. Diners will enjoy performances by the middle school and high school jazz bands and the high school jazz choirs.

County seeks towns’ support for Community ID program

NORTH LIBERTY– Will North Liberty be among the Johnson County cities that support a proposed Community ID program?
At the city council’s Feb. 10 meeting, Johnson County Auditor Travis Weipert presented information and fielded questions about the program the county hopes to launch by June of this year.
Weipert also came seeking North Liberty’s financial support for the program’s start-up costs.
“That ship has sailed for us,” North Liberty councilor Chris Hoffman said. “We had a funding request last meeting that we had to turn down because the fund we pull from is depleted.”

Tiffin approves five year CIP

TIFFIN– Make way for progress.
In January, the City of Tiffin adopted its most recent Capital Improvements Plan for fiscal years 2015 through 2020, and the to-do list is born of necessity, said Mayor Steve Berner.
“It includes needed projects. I don’t see much for wants until you reach years four or five, and those are there more as placeholders than as specific projects,” Berner said.

Lingering uncertainty at state level leaves district guessing at budget

OXFORD — While legislators on both sides of the political aisle debate school aid funding, Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District Superintendent Tim Kuehl is sure of one thing: it won’t be enough.
Kuehl has been outspoken this year regarding Governor Terry Branstad’s proposal of a 1.25 percent increase in state supplemental aid to schools, often called “allowable growth.”

City will appeal $80K award

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council voted unanimously to appeal the amount of compensation awarded to a property owner in a disputed condemnation case.
The council discussed the case in closed session at its regular meeting, rescheduled to Monday, Feb. 23, before reconvening in open session to hold the vote. No comments were made in open session.

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty farmers’ market vendor applications are now available for Penn Landing Market’s 2015 season. After last year’s pilot program, the market will be expanded and held every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting in May. The market will run through October.

Coralville Lake Eagle Watch and Expo: attendance and eagles rebound

JOHNSON COUNTY– The weather was more cooperative this year for the third annual Coralville Lake Eagle Watch and Expo, held Feb. 7, at the Coralville Lake and North Central Junior High in North Liberty.
Last year, an early morning snowstorm and icy conditions kept attendance down, but this time, the sun was shining and the temperatures mild, bringing the best attendance the event has seen, including the birds.

New rules on snacks and celebrations are among proposed changes

SOLON– Polish up those apples. Classrooms across the district could soon see some major changes when it comes to food in the classroom.
The Solon Community School District (SCSD) board had its first reading of the new wellness policy that will give parents and teachers clearer guidelines for food in the classroom and physical activity requirements.
The board approved the policy 4-1, with Director Tim Brown voting against it. The policy will be read again at the next meeting in March and, if approved again, would go into effect for the 2015-16 school year.
