By Paul Deaton
Solon Economist

SOLON– The new city hall is open for business at 101 N. Iowa Ave., where the city council held its first meeting on May 21.
But it still needs a parking lot.
Diverting budgeted funds to pay for parks and recreation projects and paving the city hall parking lot were discussed, along with a report on an addition to the fire station.
The meeting began with a moment of silence in remembrance of North Liberty Mayor Tom Salm, who died suddenly on Sunday, May 18.

Rettig looks toward another county term

JOHNSON COUNTY– While Janelle Rettig already believes she lives in the best place on earth, she won’t stop trying to make it better.
Rettig has announced her intent to run for re-election to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors this November. Appointed in 2009 to fill the vacancy left by the passing of supervisor Larry Meyer, Rettig was then elected to the seat in a 2010 special election, and re-elected in November of the same year.
“Some people think I’ve already served two terms because I’ve been through two elections,” she joked.

CORALVILLE– U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst, a Republican, will be in Coralville on Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at Press Coffee Company, 2201 E. Grantview Dr. in Coralville. Everyone is welcome.

Supes wrestle with with options for justice center

By Chris Umscheid

IOWA CITY– It could be back to the drawing table, literally, for some area architects. While the Johnson County Board of Supervisors continues to grapple with how to move forward in addressing courthouse and jail space needs, the possibility of dividing the proposed justice center into two separate projects appears more likely.

City elections Tuesday, Nov. 5

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader

TIFFIN– Municipal elections will take place Tuesday, Nov. 5. Voters in Johnson County will be asked to choose city council members to fill any vacant seats. There is only one public measure on any municipal ballots this time around; Iowa City residents will be asked if the age for entry to a bar that serves alcohol should be changed back to 19 years, instead of 21. Iowa City, University Heights and Coralville all have strongly contested races for council positions, and Coralville has four candidates running for its mayor’s seat.

Jedlicka, Schwab and Brown elected to school board

Highest turnout in county

SOLON– Voters in the Solon Community School District sided with experience in the Tuesday, Sept. 10 school board elections.
Rick Jedlicka, Dick Schwab and Tim Brown were chosen to fill three seats on the board.
Schwab was the lone incumbent in the six-person field, while Brown had previously served as a school board member, Jedlicka spent over a decade as mayor of Solon. Board members Dave Asprey and Lianne Westcot did not seek re-election.
