Rare white deer drawing a crowd near Twin View

SOLON– Traffic slowed on the highway. Neighbors out for a walk stuck around for the show, too, In the first days of July, word of the albino deer got around quickly.
For several evenings in a row, and occasionally around dawn, the snow white deer, with pink inner ears and nose, would be grazing in a just-cut hay field four miles west of Solon on County Road F-16, next to Twin View Heights.

Neighbors claim school trail has made things worse

SOLON– The residents of Marshek Court are waterlogged once more.
The beleaguered neighborhood off Sovers Street is again experiencing drainage issues, and homeowners shared their grievances with the Solon City Council last week.
It’s been six years since the city agreed to help maintain the detention pond and intakes that serve the area, but according to residents, things are as bad as ever.
“There’s so much water that comes off the school grounds, we’re trying to push so much water through such a small pipe, it’s unreal,” resident Randy Cline told council members Tuesday night.

OXFORD– Major General Robert Sentman, USA (ret.), dressed in full cavalry attire, and carrying the cavalry guidon, maintained a steady pace as he rode his horse along the streets of Oxford Thursday, July 4. Behind him the American Legion carried our nation’s flag, fire trucks sounded their horns and sirens, political parties advertised their candidates, and antique cars and tractors followed while candy flew toward eager children at the curbs.

NORTH LIBERTY– They’re getting healthier and more fit in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) schools. Kathy Campbell, the district’s wellness coordinator, gave the school board a year-end report on a new push for health and wellness during the board’s Wednesday, June 19, meeting.

SOLON– He is a father of four and the father of a U.S. patented invention. A veteran Navy officer, he has flown in Dr. Tom Dooley’s helicopter and was on the last American ship to leave Vietnam after evacuating refugees from north to south as the Korean conflict wound down. He has schooled many on the mastery of industrial arts, from high school and college students to convicted prisoners. The product of his woodworking artistry can be seen in everything from funeral homes and library buildings to iconic rural barns and decorous churches.

School board hopes to have direction on SBG

SOLON– A Standards Based Grading sub-committee, led by Matt Townsley, Dick Schwab and Lianne Westcot, presented its findings and research to the Solon school board Wednesday night in the district’s central office conference room last Wednesday, June 26.
The meeting was a work session, which was open to the public, but public input was restricted– the session was intended for the board and administration to formulate ideas for a later decision point surrounding Standards Based Grading (SBG).

Proud to be part of NL’s Garner Elementary School

NORTH LIBERTY– School is out of session and summer is in full swing, but back-to-school preparation has already started for some.
Educator Nick Proud, the new principal at Garner Elementary School in North Liberty, has been working tirelessly over the last weeks to get ready for the upcoming school year– his first year as a principal.
Proud’s daughter, Ainsley, is starting a first of her own this year as she enters kindergarten at Garner Elementary.
“It’s both of our first day at school at Garner this fall. We’re excited about that,” Proud said.

Great Eastern Iowa Tractorcade comes through Johnson County

JOHNSON COUNTY– Fourteen years and still rolling.
WMT Radio sponsored the 14th annual Great Eastern Iowa Tractorcade June 9-11, with approximately 530 tractors motoring their way across the highways and byways of southeast Iowa.
The event began as an idea from local radio personalities at WHO Radio, who worked with WMT Radio– A Clear Channel station and one of the area’s leading agricultural reporting entities– to bring vintage and contemporary tractor owners together in a central location, said Clear Channel’s Renee Uthoff, who organizes WMT’s event.

Board accepts North Bend addition as substantially complete

NORTH LIBERTY­– Ray Willoughby, the construction manager for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district, was smiling as he gave a progress report to the board of directors during their regular monthly meeting Wednesday, June 19, at North Bend Elementary in North Liberty. For a little under a year, construction has been underway on an addition to the crowded school.
At the meeting, the board voted unanimously to accept substantial completion on the addition, also known as the pod.
