Hawkeye hoops

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye men and women each had two games last week and both started the week playing against Notre Dame.

Hawkeye men

Iowa traveled to Notre Dame last Tuesday, got beat 92-78, but I thought the score was a little misleading.
I was more than a little surprised when the game started and I didn’t see Tyler Cook in the starting lineup. Tyler was the second leading scorer for the Hawks (13.7) and the leading rebounder coming into the game.

Hawkeyes going to the Outback Bowl

Iowa is going bowling for the 14th time since Kirk Ferentz became head coach.
The Hawks will be facing 18th-ranked Florida Tuesday, Jan. 2, in the Outback Bowl at noon.
Since 2001, no Big Ten team has won more bowl games, or has a higher winning percentage in bowl games than Iowa.
This will be the fifth time the Hawks have been in the Outback Bowl.
The Gators (8-4) averaged 23.4 points, 129.8 rushing yards and 215.2 passing yards.
Iowa’s defense gave up an average of 17.9 points, 153.2 rushing yards and 199.7 passing yards.

Iowa wrestlers

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeyes won eight of 10 matches at 20th-ranked South Dakota last Friday, winning 29-8.
Iowa could have won nine of 10 but Cory Clark didn’t wrestle at 133 and the Hawks lost that weight on a technical fall.
Sammy Brooks (184) and Topher Carton (141) both had major decisions while Thomas Gilman (125) had a tech fall.

How sweet it is

Iowa defeats Nebraska, 40-10

The Hawkeye football team played its best overall game of the season on Black Friday as it came up with big plays on offense, had a shutdown defense and special teams were almost perfect.
Can you believe it was 1981 the last time the Hawks beat the Cornhuskers in Iowa City?
How about this: the 40-10 win ties the largest margin of victory over Nebraska since 1899 (30-0)!
I was at the 1981 win which was also Kirk Ferentz’s first game as a Hawkeye line coach.

Hawkeye men look for scoring

Black Friday was tripleheader for the Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball teams.
Football was first at 2:30 p.m. against Nebraska; at 6 p.m. the men’s basketball team played Virginia and then at 8 p.m. the women played James Madison.

Hawkeye women

The Iowa women started things out Thanksgiving day with a 78-65 loss to ninth-ranked UCLA.
The Hawks came out strong and led early but when Megan Gustafson got her second foul late in the first quarter, the Hawkeyes lost the lead for good.

Solon wrestling team welcomes Highland state champions

SOLON– One wrestler does not a team make, but it doesn’t hurt to add some fresh talent.
And this year two shining seniors from Riverside have grappled their way onto the Solon wrestling team, which kicks off its varsity season Thursday, Dec. 1, with a 6 p.m. dual at Williamsburg.
“It was kind of a surprise, but I think they’ve really fit in well with the rest of the guys,” said Solon head coach Blake Williams, who led the team to an 8-3 conference record last year and 16-5 overall.

CCA takes home season-opener, 60-47

Inexperience nets a loss for Solon girls

SOLON– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers used a 31-19 rebounding margin to their advantage.
CCA defeated the Solon varsity girls’ basketball team, 60-47, in a home-opener Nov. 22.
“We lack height and there are some drawbacks to that especially when we are playing a taller player down low, but our lack of rebounding our first game was due more to effort and the discipline to box out,” said Solon head coach Lisa Bishop.
The Clippers were slightly better offensively than the Lady Spartans, but Solon managed only three offensive rebounds, while CCA grabbed 11.

West High boys knock down WDM Dowling, 99-94

A little slice of revenge

By Chris Umscheid

IOWA CITY– They didn’t expect to see each other so soon. Just a week after the Maroons of West Des Moines Dowling Catholic snuffed the Iowa City West High Trojans’ state championship hopes on the gridiron, the two teams met again Saturday, Nov. 26, this time on the hardwood.
However, it was a meeting that likely wouldn’t have occurred until the end of the season, at the state tournament in Des Moines but for a hiccup in preseason scheduling.

Creek Girls open with 62-47 win

Freshman Karsyn Stratton leads all with 16 points

North Liberty Leader
SOLON– A freshman led the way to victory Tuesday, Nov. 22, in Solon as the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers sailed past the Solon Lady Spartans, 62-47, to open the 2016-17 varsity basketball season. Karsyn Stratton, a freshman, set the pace for the Creek Girls with a game-high 16 points. Be DeShaw, a senior, put in 14 points for the Clippers with four buckets coming from three-point range.
