Independence downs CCA, 54-44, in substate

Creek Boys’ season ended by Indee’s Mustangs

TAMA– Conventional wisdom claims it is all but impossible for one athletic team to defeat another three times in one season. Unfortunately for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys basketball team, the Independence Mustangs debunked the claim with three wins over the Clippers this year. Indee won, 72-66, in January, 81-68 on Feb. 2 and ended the Creek Boys’ season with a 54-44 first-round substate loss Monday, Feb. 19, at South Tama High School in the first contest of a doubleheader.

NORTH LIBERTY– Some of them stormed the gridiron as West High freshmen playing in Liberty uniforms, others have flashed across the hardwood bringing recognition to The Lightning. This spring, several of Liberty High’s male student athletes will compete on the first boys track and field team, under the leadership of head coach Bruce Davis.

Big road win for Hawk women

Hawk Talk

The Iowa women had two games last week, picking up an overtime win at Rutgers, 77-66, and finishing the regular season with a win at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, 75-62, over Indiana.
The Hawk win at Rutgers was a major gut check.
Iowa jumped out early, leading 13-4 at the end of the first quarter, scored only six points in the second quarter and trailed at half, 25-19.
The Scarlet Knights led by as many as 11 in the third quarter but the Hawkeyes went to work in the fourth.

Hawk men’s free fall is over

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye men had two games last week, losing at Minnesota, 86-82, Wednesday night.
They broke their six-game losing streak with a 77-70 win at home last Sunday against Northwestern.
When the Gophers started the game with a 22-2 run, you knew the Hawks were in trouble.
Iowa was outscored 31-19 at half.
I have to give the Hawks some credit as they won the second half, 63-55, came within two, 84-82 with three seconds left, but a loss is still a loss.
It didn’t help that Jordon Bohannon was shut-out for the first time this season and Tyler Cook had six points.

Spartan wrestlers place at State

Linderbaum 3rd, Gnida 4th, Bevans takes 6th for Spartans

DES MOINES– They came back a long way after losing a lot of talent.
A state champion and a runner-up from last year’s title team were gone to graduation, but Solon’s varsity wrestling team still made its run at both the Class 2A State Dual and State Individual tournaments in Des Moines Feb. 14-17.
Senior Tyler Linderbaum finished third at 285 pounds while sophomore Zeb Gnida (120) captured fourth and junior Zack Bevans (152) took sixth to propel Solon to a tie for 13th with Crestwood in the individual meet.

Solon boys win playoff opener, 58-31

3A semifinal Feb. 22 against Fairfield

SOLON– It was over early against the Chiefs.
Solon’s varsity boys basketball team rolled past Keokuk 58-31 in the opening round of playoff action at home Monday, Feb. 19,
The Spartans held the Chiefs to five points offensively in the first quarter and held a 33-point advantage heading into the final eight minutes when Solon Head Coach Jason Pershing liberally substituted from his bench.

Spartans end regular season with win

Twenty steals helped offset a cold shooting night.

VINTON– Solon’s varsity boys basketball team ended the regular season with a 48-33 road win against Vinton-Shellsburg Thursday, Feb. 15.
The victory improved the Spartans to 14-7 on the season, and dropped the Vikings to 5-16.
Solon shot well below its season average offensively, but made up for it with disrupting the Viking defense.
“Even though we might not have shot the ball well, there were still some easy baskets in there, off those steals,” Solon Head Coach Jason Pershing said. “And then it’s also that they’re just not very comfortable making passes or running their offense.”

Brands went 4-0 in the tournament with two technical falls, a win by fall (pin) and win by decision and improved his record to 55-1.

Wahlert took the contest 64-56 and advanced to the regional final Tuesday, Feb. 20, against Marion at Marion High School while the Creek Girls retired for the season with an 11-11 record overall.
