Notch two wins for Solon boys soccer

SOLON– Solon’s varsity boys moved to 9-3 on the soccer season with a home win over West Delaware and a road victory against Anamosa last week.
Senior Ben Carr, junior Isaac Vang and sophomore Luke Yetley all scored for the Spartans in a 3-0 win April 20 hosting West Delaware. Carr also had two assists. Keeper Eric Weetman recorded a shutout with help from the Solon defense, which kept the Hawks out of striking range most of the match.

CCA’s Bormann sets new all-time school record, Creek Girls bomb the Bobcats, 8-0

TIFFIN– There’s a new all-time scoring record at Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School, in Tiffin, for varsity girls’ soccer and it belongs to Hannah Bormann. Bormann tied the previous record of 108, set by Amelia Parris in 2011, and surpassed it with 109 career goals Tuesday, April 18, at home, against the Benton Community Bobcats. Bormann scored four goals in the 8-0 win for the Clippers, which kept the Creek Girls undefeated with a 6-0 record.

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy and Trojans both emerged victorious Friday, April 21, after the annual rivalry doubleheader against City High.
The Women of Troy opened the evening with a 2-0 win to stay undefeated with a 7-0 record while dropping City to 4-3. Rachel Olson bombed the Little Hawks’ goal in the final minute of the first half for a 1-0 lead that Regan Steigleder built on with a goal in the second half. Katie McGrane made nine saves in the goal for West to preserve the shutout.

West High qualifies 16 for Drake Relays

DES MOINES– Iowa City West High will be well-represented this week in the 2017 Drake Relays with the Trojans sending student athletes in 13 events and the Women of Troy qualifying in 14.
Kolby Greiner, Bailey Nock, Gabby Skopec and Valerie Welch are slated to compete in multiple events over the three-day weekend. Greiner made it into the boys’ 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs while Skopec is in the girls’ 800, 1,500 and 3,000-meter run. Welch qualified in the 110-meter high hurdles, 400-meter low hurdles and long jump.

MARION– The Iowa City West High varsity girls golf team finished ninth in the nine-team field of the 2017 CRANDIC meet held Wednesday, April 19, at the Gardner Golf Course, in Marion.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy won the meet with a total score of 389, followed by Cedar Rapids Prairie (390), Cedar Rapids Washington (394), Linn-Mar (404), Cedar Rapids Jefferson (422), Cedar Rapids Xavier (427), Marion (434), Iowa City High (435) and the Women of Troy (439).

IC West defeats Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 2-1

CEDAR RAPIDS– Iowa City West High’s Women of Troy knocked off the sixth-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars, 2-1, on the Cougars’ pitch Tuesday, April 18.
Regan Steigleder struck in the 20th minute off an assist from both Emma Cooper and Leah Rhodes for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars tied the match 1-1 just before halftime on a penalty kick due to a “hand ball in the box,” according to West High coach David Rosenthal.
Steigleder broke the tie in the second half with a 40-yard missile in the 44th minute.

WASHINGTON– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) girls track and field team placed fourth Thursday, April 20, at Washington’s 43rd annual girls meet. Benton Community won the meet with 139 team points, followed by Mount Pleasant (122), the host Demons (101), the Creek Girls (88), Fort Madison (69) and Albia (60).

WILLIAMSBURG– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity girls golf team placed third in a four-team field Monday, April 17, at Williamsburg’s quad meet. Vinton-Shellsburg won the meet with a total score of 190, followed by the host Raiders (192), the Clippers (218) and Marion (224).
Allison Greathouse led the Creek Girls with a 51, followed by Emma Davis (52), Sheyanne Koethe (56), Payton Beckler (59), Thea Clennon (60) and Emily Greathouse (63).

This is the second part of a series previewing the Iowa Hawkeye spring football practice. Last week I looked at the offensive line, which returns six players with starting experience. This week I’ll talk about the tight ends, wide receivers and fullbacks.

Tight ends

Kirk Ferentz likes to use his tight ends, who not only need to be able to catch the ball but be able to block on running plays.
It really hurt the offense when tight end George Kittle went out with an injury after the Purdue game.

Lakeview PTO hosts 6th Annual Spartan Dash Saturday, April 29

SOLON– The Lakeview Elementary PTO will host its 6th Annual Spartan Dash on Saturday, April 29 (rain or shine). The Spartan Dash is a fun and crazy fitness event that serves as the Lakeview PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year.
Interested individuals should sign up to participate in the event with a “family team.”
Family teams will walk, skip or run through obstacles set up along the 1-mile trail in the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA). Obstacles will be suitable for both children and adults and are guaranteed to have you laughing.
